Introduction

Outside Access (Alan Turing BB Block Rear Entrance)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located at the rear of the Alan Turing Building, opposite the Frank Whittle/ Thomas Telford Building.
    • There is ramped/sloped access at this entrance.
    • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 150cm (4ft 11in).
    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of less than 2cm.
  • Ramp/Slope View
    • There is a ramp/slope at this entrance.
    • The ramp/slope is located in front of the entrance.
    • The ramp/slope gradient is slight.

Block BB Rear Entrance to AC Entrance

  • Upon exiting the Alan Turing Building rear entrance (BB Block) turn right and head up the hill.
  • There is a section of uneven block paving on exiting the building.
  • There is a bollard and a railing as you turn right with a width of 105cm between them.
  • This can be seen in photographs 1 and 5.
  • After a few metres the surface of the pavement becomes tarmac.
  • There is a steep uphill gradient which can be seen in photographs 3 and 4.
  • After approximately 35m there is a service road with dropped kerbs on either side. These can be seen in photographs 8 and 9.
  • There is another section of pavement shown in photograph 10 followed by another service road after approximately 17m. This service road also has dropped kerbs on either side and can be seen in photograph 11.
  • Continue for approximately 15m until you reach the crossing which can be seen in photographs 12, 13 and 14.
  • This crossing has tactile dropped kerbs on either side.
  • After crossing the road turn left and head towards the road shown in photographs 15, 16 and 17.

Outside Access (Lift Lobby Front Entrance)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located at the front of the building.
    • There is step free access at this entrance, via lift.
    • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 147cm (4ft 10in).
    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of less than 2cm.
  • Step(s) View
    • There is a / are step(s) at this entrance.
    • The step(s) is / are located to the left as you face the entrance.
    • There is / are 8 step(s) to access the entrance.
    • There is not tactile paving at the top and bottom of the step(s).
    • The step(s) is / are clearly marked.
    • The step(s) is / are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The handrails are on both sides.
  • Lift View
    • There is a lift to access this entrance.
    • The lift does bypass the step(s).
  • Comments View
    • There is tactile paving at top of the steps.
    • There is a dark mat upon entry at may look like a hole to some people.

Lift (Lift Lobby Front Entrance)

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located outside the lift lobby entrance.
  • The lift is a platform lift.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • The lift is approximately 2m (2yd 7in) from the lift lobby entrance.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 132cm (4ft 4in).
  • The lift door is manual, opens outwards and may be difficult to open.
  • The dimensions of the lift are 120cm x 180cm (3ft 11in x 5ft 11in).
  • There are separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • There is not a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
  • The lift does not have a visual floor indicator.
  • The lift does not have an audible announcer.
  • The lift does not have a hearing enhancement system.
  • The lift does not have Braille markings.
  • The lift does not have tactile markings.
  • The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
  • The lighting level in the lift is moderate to good.
  • Comments View
    • At the time of survey (November 2022) the door was not opening on the lift.

AC Entrance to Lift

  • Upon entering the building turn right to access the lift.
  • The distance is approximately 2m and there are no obstacles between the entrance and the lift.
  • There is a dark mat on the floor which may look like a hole to some people.

Lift (Block AC and AD Shared Lift)

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located on the right of the building, in the adjoining corridor between Blocks AC and AD.
  • The lift is a standard lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • There are manual, single doors which may be difficult to open to access the lift lobby on all floors.
  • The lift is approximately 3m (3yd 10in) from the lift lobby entrance.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 150cm (4ft 11in).
  • The dimensions of the lift are 200cm x 260cm (6ft 7in x 8ft 6in).
  • There are not separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • There is not a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
  • The lift does have a visual floor indicator.
  • The lift does have an audible announcer.
  • The lift does not have a hearing enhancement system.
  • The lift does not have Braille markings.
  • The lift does have tactile markings.
  • The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
  • The lighting level in the lift is good.

Lift to Bridge

  • Take the lift to the third floor.
  • Turn left on exiting the lift and head to the bridge.
  • The distance is approximately 6m from the lift.
  • The surface of the floor is vinyl.
  • The floor is shiny.
  • On the fourth floor the flooring is carpet as seen in photographs 1 to 3.

Entrance (Bridge)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located to your left on exiting the AC/AD lift.
    • There is step free access at this entrance, via lift.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) away from you (push).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 164cm (5ft 5in).
  • Second Set of Doors View
    • There is a second set of doors.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 164cm (5ft 5in).
  • Comments View
    • The flooring between the two sets of doors is vinyl.
    • The flooring is shiny.
    • The doors on the third floor can be seen in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
    • There are similar doors on the fourth floor which can be seen in photographs 4, 5 and 6.

Block BC Stairwell to Block BC

  • As you reach the stairwell there is vinyl flooring and a section of tactile paving at the top and bottom of the stairs. This can be seen in photograph 1.
  • To exit the stairwell there is a single heavy door that opens towards you with a locked extension leaf and a width of 88cm. This can be seen in photograph 2.
  • Turn left for 10m through the carpeted area shown in photograph 3 until you reach a set of heavy double doors with a width of 142cm to your right. These are shown in photograph 4.

Block BC to Block BB

  • After passing through the doors head straight ahead for 15m.
  • There is vinyl flooring that is shiny.
  • There is a small seating area. This can be seen in photograph 1.
  • Turn left and continue for 17m along the corridor.
  • This corridor has a width of 130cm at its narrowest point and can be seen in photographs 2 and 3.
  • At the end of the corridor turn right again and continue along the next corridor for 17m. The width of the corridor is approximately 134cm. This can be seen in photograph 4.
  • Turn left and head to the doors into the stairwell which has doors on either side of it. This can be seen in photograph 5.
  • The doors are single with a locked extension leaf and can be seen in photograph 6 and 7.
  • The stairwell has a section of tactile paving at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Fourth Floor BC to BB

  • Continue forward for approximately 5m along the carpeted area. This can be seen in photograph 2.
  • Then turn left along the first corridor and continue for 20m. The corridor has a width of 138cm. This can be seen in photograph 3.
  • Turn right and continue for approximately 20m along another similar corridor, there is a set of permanently held open doors along this corridor with a width of 112cm. The doors and corridor can be seen in photographs 4 and 5.
  • At the end of the corridor turn left and head through three sets of doors to reach the entrance to Block BB.
  • The first set of doors can be seen in photograph 7. These doors are heavy double doors with a width of 133cm.
  • There are then two sets of single manual heavy doors with a small locked leaf either side of the BB/BC stairwell. These have a width of 88cm and can be seen in photographs 8 and 9.

Entrance (BB Entrance)

    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.
    • The width of the door opening is 142cm (4ft 8in).
