Getting To and Around Wolfson College

  • Arriving By Car or Bike View
    • Wolfson College is situated just south west of Cambridge city centre in Barton Road (the A603). This part of Cambridge can easily be accessed from Junction 12 of the M11. There are various Park and Ride schemes for people who would prefer to not drive into central Cambridge.
    • The main car park for the College is situated at the front of the site and is accessed from Barton Road. There is also an additional Blue Badge parking bay at the rear of the site outside Selwyn Gardens House. Staff may also be able to park outside Blocks S-V. Anyone parking on site will need prior permission. Students are generally not permitted to use cars in the immediate locality unless given permission based on specific requirements.
    • Cycling is a popular form of transport in Cambridge. The city is relatively flat and there is an extensive network of cycle routes. There are plenty of places to store cycles on the College site, the main one is at the rear of the site next to the laundry.

  • Accessing the College Site View
    • The main pedestrian entrance to the College site is located on Barton Road. There are gates to either side of the vehicular entrance but the one on the left avoids traffic entering and leaving the main car park. The gate is held open, and the opening width is 105cm (Photograph 1). There is a slight upwards slope in front of the gate (Photograph 2). Immediately beyond the gate is a straight level footpath (Photograph 3) which leads to Front Court where the main building is located. The main building has ramped access which bypasses 3 steps (Photograph 4). Please see the Detailed Access Guide for further details on that building.
    • Key card holders can also access the College site via the automated rear gate which is situated at the end of Selwyn Gardens (Photograph 5). The gate opens away from you (push). The opening width of the gate is 101cm and the height of the card reader is 95cm.
  • Getting Around the College Site View
    • There is an extensive network of paths which run around the external areas of the College site. These paths are step-free, and the site is generally quite flat. The majority of paths have a flagstone paving surface, but a few are tarmac or block paving (Photographs 6-11). In front of the entrances to N Block on Lee Court (photograph 12) and East Court there are sections of tactile black paving (Photograph 13). The paths might be very slightly uneven in places. The majority of the paths are quite wide (130cm-145cm+) but some are narrower (75cm-120cm) (Photographs 14-18). There are also some garden areas with a grass surface. Bench seats are available for resting.
    • There are some slight gradients on a few of the paths such as the one between the Blue Badge parking bay in the main car park and the Jack King Building (Photograph 19), the one leading down to Barton House and the one through the passageway to the left of Toda House (Photograph 20).
  • Additional College Site Information View
    • There is stepped access into and around some of the buildings at Wolfson College. Please see the Detailed Access Guides for further information.
    • There is limited directional signage (Photograph 23) around the site which may mean those unfamiliar with the layout may need an escort or a map to reference. Accessible toilet facilities are located in the main building.
