Introduction

Getting Here

  • Bridge Street and The Rows are located within the centre of Chester and the city walls.
  • Bridge Street and The Rows can be accessed via The Cross at the junction of Eastgate Street, Watergate Street and Northgate Street via foot.
  • Vehicle access onto Bridge Street is via the junction of Pepper Street and Grosvenor Street for unloading before 10.30.
  • Bridge Street then becomes pedestrianised from the centre, leading up to The Cross junction.
  • The nearest train station is Chester.
  • There is a local bus service in operation throughout Chester that serves the city centre.
  • Chester Council operates a bus service directly to the city centre from the train station for £1.00 either way.
  • This service is free for people over the age of 60 and registered disabled persons.
  • There is a taxi rank at the bottom of Bridge Street, at the junction of Grosvenor Street and Pepper Street.

  • Blue Badge holders are permitted to stay for 4 hours for free, then charges apply.

Bridge Street Overview

  • Bridge Street is accessed via the junction at The Cross in the town centre or via the Junction at Grosvenor Street / Pepper Street.
  • When you enter Bridge Street there is a cobbled road. There is a step at the edge (12-15cm high) onto the footpath.
  • The footpath is yorkstone paving to either side of the road.
  • The pathway fronting the shops to either side of the road measure 2m in width, reducing in areas to 1.6m.
  • There is a single kerb at the edge of the pathway. The height of the kerb is between 12cm-15cm.
  • There is a slight gradient on the pathway on Bridge Street.
  • Traffic is allowed on Bridge Street up to 10.30am daily, thereafter it will become pedestrianised.
  • Above the shop fronts are The Rows. These are known as Bridge Street Rows East and West.
  • Access to The Rows is mainly stepped access points along the street.
  • Step free access is available which will be highlighted within the guide.

Bridge Street / The Cross Junction

  • At the junction of The Cross this gives you access to The Bridge Street Rows East and West.
  • Access to Bridge Street Row West also gives you access to Watergate Street Row South has seen in picture 3.
  • There is also an entrance at The Cross which gives access to Bridge Street Row East and Eastgate Street South.

Grosvenor Street / Pepper Street Junction

  • At the junction of Grosvenor Street / Pepper Street there is a pedestrian crossing which gives you access onto Bridge Street.
  • At the crossing there is tactile paving with a dropped kerb.
  • To the centre is a central reservation with a dropped kerb with tactical paving.
  • The crossing has audible tones with warning lights advising when it is safe to cross.
  • There are rotating cones to the underside of the crossing at the lights.

Bridge Street Row East

  • Bridge Street Row East is accessed along Bridge Street via stepped entrances. There is an entrance on the corner of the Grosvenor Street / Pepper Street junction that has 14 deep steps leading up to The Row shop fronts (shown in photographs 1 and 2).
  • Along Bridge Street there are stepped entrances with deep steps and handrails to both sides (shown in photographs 4 and 5).
  • The pathway fronting the shops along the row measure 2m in width, with a slight gradient along the length of The Row.
  • The surface along The Row varies from timber, concrete and marble.
  • Halfway along Bridge Street there is stepped access leading up to The Row and The Grosvenor Shopping Centre (shown in photograph 6).
  • There are 15+ medium height steps, with handrails to both sides and the centre.
  • The entrances along Bridge Street will also give you access to Eastgate Row South.
  • Step free access onto Bridge Street Row East is via the Grosvenor Shopping Centre entrances.
  • The entrances are located on Pepper Street and Eastgate Street to access Bridge Street Row East and Eastgate Row South.

Bridge Street Row East and Eastgate Row South Entrance

  • The entrance to The Rows at The Cross junction is stepped access only.
  • There are 8 deep, unmarked steps with a handrail in the centre and both sides.
  • The paving to the entrance at the steps is level.
  • Once you reach the top of the steps you will gain access to The Rows.

Grosvenor Shopping Centre

  • The Grosvenor Shopping Centre gives access to Eastgate Row South and Bridge Street Row East.
  • Entrance into the shopping centre can be gained from Pepper Street or Eastgate Street.

Watergate Street Row South / Bridge Street Row East Entrance

  • The entrance to The Rows is opposite The Cross.
  • There is level access on the pathway to the front of the entrance to The Rows.
  • The entrance to The Rows is via 14 medium height steps, with handrails on both sides.
  • At the top of the stairs if you turn left this gives you access to Bridge Street Row East.
  • Watergate Row South is straight ahead of you at the top of the stairs.

Bridge Street Row West

  • Bridge Street Row West is accessed via various stepped entrances along Bridge Street.
  • There is unmarked, deep steps with handrails on both sides.
  • The pathways along The Row, fronting the shop fronts measure 2m wide with slight gradients along its length.
  • The surface of The Row fronting the shops varies from timber decking, concrete and asphalt surfaces.
  • Step free access to The Row can be gained direct from Bridge Street via the ramped access on Pier Point Lane.
  • There is also step free access form the Weaver Street access point.

Pier Point Lane Step Free Access

  • The Pier Point Lane step free access is located on Bridge Street next to the Carluccios Restaurant.
  • The entrance way leads up to ramp that has a slight gradient pathway with a cobbled surface.
  • The pathway is 180cm wide leading up to a ramped access to the left hand side.
  • There is tactile paving at the front of the ramped entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight slope gradient with a hand rail to both sides going up, the ramp is 110cm wide.
  • The ramp surface is timber with a non slip coating.
  • The ramp entrance gives you direct access on to Bridge Street East Row.
  • If you turn left at the top of the ramp this gives to access to Bridge Street Row East and Watergate Street Row South.

Weaver Street Step Free Access

  • There are two step free access points to the Watergate Street Row South.
  • These access points also give you access to Bridge Street Row east.
  • The entrance from Weaver Street gives you direct access onto Watergate Street Row south.
  • The entrance on Weaver Street is located behind Watergate Street.
  • There is an easy slope on the pathway leading to the entrance and the alley beyond.
  • The alley has concrete paving leading up to the entrance of Watergate Street Row.
  • The alley is 120cm in width at the narrowest point.
  • The entrance leading onto the Watergate Row South has a slight slope at the entrance.
  • If you turn right at the entrance, this gives you access to Bridge Street Row east.
