Getting Here
- Eastgate Street and The Rows are located within the centre of Chester within the city walls.
- Eastgate Street can be accessed via the Junction at The Cross on foot and from St Johns Street and Fordham Street on foot at the Eastgate Clock end of Eastgate Street.
- Northgate Street gives direct access onto Eastgate Street.
- Eastgate Street has a section that becomes pedestrianised at 10.30 daily.
- The nearest train station is Chester.
- There is a local bus service in operation throughout Chester that serves the city centre.
- Chester Council operates a bus service directly to the city centre from the train station for £1.00 either way.
- This service is free for people over the age of 60 and registered disabled persons.
- There is a taxi rank at the bottom of Bridge Street, at the junction of Grosvenor Street and Pepper Street.
Parking
- ON STREET BLUE BADGE PARKING
- On street Blue Badge parking is available on the following Streets;
- Hamilton Place
- Goss Street
- St Warburg's Street
- Godstall Lane
- Parking on these streets is restricted to a maximum stay of 4 hours.
- PUBLIC CAR PARK
- Public car parks are available on the following streets;
- Frodsham Street
- Princess Street
- Market Car Park
- Trinity Street
- Charges apply to none Blue Badge holders.
- Blue Badge holders are permitted to stay for 4 hours for free, then charges apply.
Street Overview
- Eastgate Street is accessed via the junction at The Cross, leading directly into Eastgate Street, or via entering Eastgate Street from Northgate Street.
- Once you reach Eastgate Street there is a road to the centre with cobbled paving.
- The pathways to either side of the road are yorkstone paving with an easy gradient sloping down the street.
- Access to Eastgate Row North and South is via stepped entrances located along the Eastgate Street.
- Access to Eastgate Row South for wheelchair users is via the Grosvenor Shopping Centre.
- Step free access to Eastgate Row North for wheelchair users is via an entrance passage way located on Godsall Lane opposite Chester Cathedral via St Werburgh Street.
- This entrance also gives access to Northgate Street Row East.
Eastgate Row North
- Eastgate Row North can be accessed via steps in various locations along Eastgate Street.
- The entrance at the corner, by The Cross, is to the side of H.Samuels.
- There are 15+ deep steps with handrails on both sides.
- This entrance also gives access to Northgate Row East.
- Along Eastgate Street there are stepped entrances to Eastgate Row North. These steps are deep and have have handrails on both sides (shown in photographs 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12)
- The pathways fronting the shops on Eastgate Row North are 2m wide, with a slight sloping gradient along its length.
- The pathways surface varies from concrete paving to wooden timber.
Godstall Lane Step Free Access
- The entrance at Godstall Lane has a paved stone entrance with an easy slope. The entrance is 282cm wide with a bollard to the centre.
- The passage way is on a slight slope and has a surface of yorkstone paving.
- The width of the passage way is 282cm, reducing in width to 98cm halfway down.
- At this point there is a slight slope leading onto the entrance for Eastgate Row North and Northgate Row East.
Eastgate Row South
- Eastgate Row South is accessed via steps along Eastgate Street.
- There is an entrance at The Cross which has 8 deep steps, with a handrail in the centre (shown in photographs 1, 2 and 3).
- As you procced along Eastgate Street, there are stepped entrances along the street. The steps are deep and have handrails on both sides (shown in photographs 7, 8 and 9).
- The entrance to the Grosvenor Shopping Centre can be accessed along Eastgate Street (shown in photograph 13).
- To the right of the Grosvenor Shopping Centre entrance is 5 deep steps, with handrails on both sides giving access to Eastgate Row South (shown in photographs 14 and 15).
- The pathways fronting the shops along Eastgate Row are 2m wide, with a slight sloping gradient along its length. The surface of the pathway varies from timber decking, concrete and marble tiles.
- Wheelchair users can gain access to Eastgate Row South via the Grosvenor Shopping Centre.
- Access to Eastgate Row South can also be gained through the Debenhams store.
Bridge Street Row East and Eastgate Row South Entrance
- The entrance to The Rows at The Cross junction is stepped access only.
- There are 8 deep, unmarked steps with a handrail in the centre and both sides.
- The paving to the entrance at the steps is level.
- Once you reach the top of the steps you will gain access to The Rows.
Grosvenor Shopping Centre
- The Grosvenor Shopping Centre gives access to Eastgate Row South and Bridge Street Row East.
- Entrance into the shopping centre can be gained from Pepper Street or Eastgate Street.
