Introduction

Getting Here

  • Watergate Street and The Rows are located within the Centre of Chester within the city walls.
  • Watergate Street can be accessed via The Cross at the junction of Bridge Street, Eastgate Street and Northgate Street on foot.
  • Access onto Watergate Street can also be gained from St Martins Way and Nicholas Street.
  • Vehicle access is allowed for loading and unloading up to 10.30 daily when the Street becomes pedestrianised.
  • The nearest train station is Chester.
  • There is a local bus service in operation throughout Chester that serves the city centre.
  • Chester Council operates a bus service directly to the city centre from the train station for £1.00 either way.
  • This service is free for people over the age of 60 and registered disabled persons.
  • There is a taxi rank at the bottom of Bridge Street, at the junction of Grosvenor Street and Pepper Street.

Watergate Street Overview

  • Watergate Street is accessed via the junction at The Cross in the town centre or via St Martins Way/ Nicholas Street junction.
  • Once in Watergate Street there is a cobbled road to the centre with yorkstone paths to either side of the shop fronts.
  • The paving/pathway fronting the shops to either side of the road are 2m wide and reduce in width to 1.6m wide in some sections of the pathway.
  • There is a single step at the kerb edge.
  • Above the shops are The Rows on Watergate Street to either side, these are known as the South side and North side.
  • Access to The Rows is predominately via stepped access points from Watergate Street.
  • Accessible access for wheelchair users to The Rows is available which is highlighted in the guide.

Watergate Street / The Cross Juction

  • The junction at The Cross to enter Watergate Street has concrete paving with level access.
  • The road is cobbled leading to the entrances to The Rows.
  • Approaching The Cross from Eastgate Street, access to The Rows is to the left and right hand sides via steps.
  • To the left the entrance gives access to The Rows for Watergate Row South and Bridge Row East.
  • To the right hand side of Watergate Street is access via steps to Watergate Row North.

Watergate Street Row South / Bridge Street Row East Entrance

  • The entrance to The Rows is opposite The Cross.
  • There is level access on the pathway to the front of the entrance to The Rows.
  • The entrance to The Rows is via 14 medium height steps, with handrails on both sides.
  • At the top of the stairs if you turn left this gives you access to Bridge Street Row East.
  • Watergate Row South is straight ahead of you at the top of the stairs.

Watergate Row South Entrances

  • As you walk along Watergate Street, access to Watergate Row south is via steps that are located either side of the shops in various locations.
  • The steps at the entrance are mainly deep with handrails to the left going up.
  • Halfway down Watergate Street there is a set of stairs that divide into two (shown in photographs 12, 13, 14 and 15). There are 10 deep steps, with handrails alternating from left to right.
  • At the bottom of Watergate Street when you enter from the St Martins Way / Nicholas Street junction, there is a stepped entrance to your right. This gives access to Watergate Row south.
  • The pathway in front of the entrance has a slight gradient.

Watergate Street - St Martins Way/Nicholas Street Junction

  • The entrance to Watergate Street at the junction has level access to the pathway either side with a dropped kerb at the junction.
  • The pathways are yorkstone paving with a slight gradient leading onto Watergate Street.
  • The road is cobbled and uneven.
  • When you enter Watergate Street from the junction the pathway is narrow measuring 100cm at its narrowest. When you get to the shop fronts the pathway becomes wider.

Weaver Street Step Free Access

  • There are two step free access points to the Watergate Street Row South.
  • These access points also give you access to Bridge Street Row east.
  • The entrance from Weaver Street gives you direct access onto Watergate Street Row south.
  • The entrance on Weaver Street is located behind Watergate Street.
  • There is an easy slope on the pathway leading to the entrance and the alley beyond.
  • The alley has concrete paving leading up to the entrance of Watergate Street Row.
  • The alley is 120cm in width at the narrowest point.
  • The entrance leading onto the Watergate Row South has a slight slope at the entrance.
  • If you turn right at the entrance, this gives you access to Bridge Street Row east.

Pier Point Lane Step Free Access

  • The Pier Point Lane step free access is located on Bridge Street next to the Carluccios Restaurant.
  • The entrance way leads up to ramp that has a slight gradient pathway with a cobbled surface.
  • The pathway is 180cm wide leading up to a ramped access to the left hand side.
  • There is tactile paving at the front of the ramped entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight slope gradient with a hand rail to both sides going up, the ramp is 110cm wide.
  • The ramp surface is timber with a non slip coating.
  • The ramp entrance gives you direct access on to Bridge Street East Row.
  • If you turn left at the top of the ramp this gives to access to Bridge Street Row East and Watergate Street Row South.

Watergate Street Row South Access

  • The pathways fronting the shops on Watergate Row South are a mixture of concrete paving, asphalt and timber decking.
  • There are slight slopes running the length of The Row fronting the shops.
  • The Row has a low ceiling with exposed timber beams to sections of the walkway.

Watergate Row North Entrances

  • Watergate Gate Row North can be accessed via the stepped entrance at The Cross junction next to St Peters Church.
  • The entrance to Watergate Row, north next to the church has 10 deep steps with handrails on both sides (shown in photographs 1, 2 and 3).
  • There are further stepped entrances along Watergate Street to access The Row.
  • The steps are deep with handrails on both sides.
  • At the bottom of Watergate Street there is a stepped entrance leading onto The Row from Cook Street (shown in photographs 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10).
  • At the Cook Street entrance to The Row there are 9 deep steps with handrails on both sides.

Watergate Row North Step Free Access - Goss Street

  • Step free access to the Watergate Row North is via a ramped accessed from Goss Street.
  • If you proceed along Watergate Street the entrance is located next to the Reiss Store.
  • The entrance from Watergate Street is 320cm which has a concrete paved surface on a slight gradient leading up to the ramp.
  • The surface of the ramp is concrete which measures 140cm wide. There is a handrail to the right hand side going up.
  • Once you reach the top of the ramp you will have complete access to Watergate Row north and the shops.

Watergate Street Row North Access

  • The pathways fronting the shops along Watergate Row North are timber, concrete and asphalt.
  • There is a slight gradient slope on the pathways along the length of The Rows.
  • The ceiling height on The Rows is low with timber beams in the ceiling.
