Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include Postgraduate Fine Art Studios, The Department of Media and Communications, The Centre for Urban and Community Research, The Centre for Cultural Studies and Seminar Rooms.
  • The building is located on Laurie Grove and there are various maps/signage which show the buildings on campus with the accessible routes clearly marked.
    There is a map/sign at the entrance to Laurie Grove Car Park and also at the bottom of Laurie Grove and Dixon Road where they meet Lewisham Way/ New Cross Road.

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • Goldsmiths is located in New Cross, South East London on Lewisham Road, five miles from central London.

      From Central London take the A2 towards Dover via the Old Kent Road.
      At the end of Old Kent Road (on the New Cross Gate one-way system) turn into New Cross Road.
      Keep in the right hand lane and shortly after Sainsbury's take the A20 fork to Lewisham.
      Turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way – Goldsmiths is on the left.

      From Kent, Surrey, Sussex, or north if using Blackwall Tunnel or Dartford River Crossing (southbound).
      Follow the A2 or A20 towards London (using M25 or South Circular road to join the nearest of these).
      On the A20, after passing through Lewisham, the Richard Hoggart Building is clearly visible on the left after about one mile.
      On the A2, follow the left turn after New Cross Station into Amersham Road, turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way – Goldsmiths is on the left downhill.
    • There is no public parking on the Goldsmiths campus.
      Parking is very limited on the Goldsmiths campus. There are a number of designated bays for Blue Badge holders reserved for current staff and students with mobility needs.
      There are 2 on-street Blue Badge bays on Dixon Road, to the right of the Richard Hoggart Building, approximately 40m from the main entrance gate.
      Visitors requiring parking should contact the college at least 48 hours in advance.
  • By Bus View
    • The following buses stop outside Goldsmiths: 21, 36, 53, 136, 171, 172, 177, 225, 321, 343, 436 and 453.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest over ground station is New Cross Rail Station and is approximately 5 minutes away.
      New Cross Gate rail station is also within travelling distance of Goldsmiths.

Building Parking

  • The building does not have its own dedicated parking.
  • Site/Campus Car Parks View
    • There is a site/campus car park for staff, students and visitors within approximately 200m.

      There is an accessibility map with the ideal accessible routes by the bays. Photographs 4-8 show the standard on-street parking along Laurie Grove and the accessibility maps with ideal accessible routes which are at the top and bottom of the road.
      The first 25m of Laurie Grove is a 'red route' with restrictions on parking from Monday to Saturday from 7am to 7pm. Cars can park for 1 hour maximum with no return within 2 hours. Outside of these times there are no restrictions. The bays are not individually spaced.
      The majority of Laurie Road after the first 25m has unrestricted parking along one side of the road.
      There are no road markings or signage that indicate restrictions.

    • At the time of survey the pedestrian entrance (normally gated), had no gate attached.
      The gate's width is 120cm and there is a slight slope.
      There are key card readers 120cm high for the gate.

    • There is a small room (with a few seats opposite reception) with two manual, heavy, single doors which are 84cm wide that link the main and accessible entrance which is shown in photograph 1 and 2.
    • This can be used to access the North staircase (by the main entrance) which has a stairlift to Floor 1. Assistance would be needed for wheelchair users as there are 3 steps to access the lift with both entrances on a slightly higher level.
    • Photograph 3 shows the clearly signposted facilities/areas by the main entrance.
    • G05 (Small Pool) and the Large Pool have been converted into art studios with various partition walls as shown in photograph 5.

Reception

    • The counter is 104cm high. There are identical counters on either side of the Reception office the accessible and main entrances.
    • At the time of survey (January 2022), the reception was only staffed periodically by security staff.
    • There is a small room with a couple of chairs by reception as shown in photograph 3 and this room links the main and accessible entrances.

Other Floors

  • Steps View
    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1, 2.
    • The stairs are located by the main and accessible entrances.
    • The stairs are approximately 6m from the main entrance.
    • There are 15+ steps between floors.
    • There are manual, single doors which may be difficult to open to access the stairwell on the first floor and on the second floor.
    • The lighting levels are good.
    • The steps are clearly marked.
    • The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The steps have a handrail on both sides.
    • There is a landing.
    • This staircase by the main entrance has a stairlift which can be used to access Level 1.
      Assistance could be needed as from either entrance there are 3 steps to access the lift.
      The staircase can be reached from the accessible entrance via 2 manual doors.
      The staircase accesses The Department of Art studios (halfway up the staircase), Room 106 Council Room, 101 Sociology and the doorway to the stairs for level 2 and is shown in photographs 1-4.
      The other staircase by the accessible entrance leads to room LGB 107, 119 and the Department of Art, however this staircase does not have a stairlift and has a handrail on the right only. The staircase is 5m from the accessible entrance. It is shown in photographs 5-7.
      The staircase from Floor 1 to 2 has stairs 18cm high and a handrail on the left going up. It accesses rooms 2.1 and 2.2 and is entered via the door at the top of the staircase with the stairlift. It is shown in photographs 8-11.
      Due to the low roof on floor 2, the doorway at the top of the stairs has an angled doorframe that is 136cm to 204cm high. This can be a hazard.

Lift

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located at the bottom of the stairs by the main entrance. There are 3 steps to access it from the main or accessible entrances.
  • The lift is a stair lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • The weight limit for the lift is 150kg.
  • The lift is approximately 16m (17yd 1ft) from the accessible entrance.

    • There are manual, heavy double doors (with one leaf locked) that are 70cm wide to access the level change and rooms.
    • There are two identical sets of steps either side of room G03, so 8 steps in total are used to access G06.
    • Beyond the 8 steps there is a spiral staircase with open risers up to the Research Office (CUCR). The steps are 18cm high and are not clearly marked. They do have a handrail on the right-hand side.
    • There are 22 steps in total and the area at the top of the staircase is poorly lit.

Level Change (Access to Large Pool (LG Art Studios))
