Access Guide
Introduction
- The following information describes the route from Huddersfield Train Station to the John Smith’s Stadium.
- The approximate distance of this route is 0.9km.
- The route takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
- The route leads through St Georges Square and along Railway Street, Northumberland Street, Leeds Road, Gasworks Street and Stadium Way.
- The majority of paths along the route consist of tarmac with some slight gradients in places.
- There is street signage located along the route directing you to the stadium.
- The potential hazards on this route include; busy roads, crossing points and congested pathways.
- The visual indicators at the crossing points are activated by push buttons, these are between the heights of 95cm and 105cm.
Huddersfield Train Station
- There is step-free access via lift, leading from the station platforms to the station concourse area.
- There is step-free access along the station concourse.
- Accessible toilets are available on the station platforms.
- There is step-free access when exiting the station.
- Car parking facilities are available at the station.
Huddersfield Train Station to John William Street Pedestrian Crossing (via St George's Square and Railway Street)
- As you exit the station turn left after the ramp into St Georges Square.
- Go through St Georges Square towards Railway Street.
- There is step-free access through St Georges Square.
- The surface of St Georges Square is concrete tiles.
- There is bench seating available.
- Follow St Georges Square towards the statue of Howard Wilson.
- After the statue St Georges Square merges into Railway Street.
- Follow Railway Street for approximately 60m until you reach John William Street.
- There is a bus stop located on Railway Street which reduces the width of the path.
- Turn left and follow John William Street for approximately 10m until you reach the pedestrian crossing point.
John William Street Pedestrian Crossing to Northumberland Street
- This crossing consists of two crossing points.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from the right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from the left.
- There are dropped kerbs at each crossing point.
- The surface of each crossing point is concrete tiles.
- The road surface is tarmac.
- Each crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
- The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
- There are rotating cones located at the base of the push button boxes to indicate when it is safe to cross.
- After completing the crossing turn left and follow John William Street for approximately 5m.
- Bear right onto Northumberland Street.
Northumberland Street to Southgate Pedestrian Crossing
- After turning onto Northumberland Street, follow the path for approximately 200m.
- There is step-free access along Northumberland Street.
- The surface of the path varies between tarmac and concrete tiles.
- Along the path there are a number of crossings points.
- The crossing points cross the following roads; Wood Street, Byram Street, Lord Street and Primitive Street.
- Each crossing point has dropped kerbs on either side of the road.
- At the bottom of Northumberland Street bear right and follow the path to the Southgate pedestrian crossing.
Southgate Pedestrian Crossing to Leeds Road
- This crossing consists of 3 crossing points.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from the right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from the right.
- At the third crossing point traffic is coming from the left.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
- The surface of each crossing point is tarmac.
- The surface of the road is tarmac.
- Each crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
- The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
- There are rotating cones located at the base of the push button boxes to indicate when it is safe to cross.
- After completing the crossing follow the path onto Leeds Road.
Leeds Road to Gas Works Street
- Continue along Leeds Road and follow the path for approximately 300 metres until you reach Gas Works Street.
- The surface of the path varies between tarmac and concrete tiles.
- There are some slight slopes in places.
- Along the route there are some sign posts and advertising boards which can restrict the path width.
- The surface of the path is uneven in places.
- Along the path there are a number of crossings points.
- The crossing points are for Old Leeds Road and various industrial units.
- There crossings have dropped kerbs.
- When you reach Gas Works Street turn right at the crossing point.
Gas Works Street to St Andrew's Road Pedestrian Crossing
- After turning right onto Gas Works Street, follow the path for approximately 220m until you reach the St Andrew’s Road pedestrian crossing.
- The surface of the path is tarmac.
- The path is uneven in places.
- There are crossing points along the path over various access roads.
- The crossing points do not have dropped kerbs; however the kerb has a slightly lower height.
- The path width narrows in places due to lamp posts.
- At the bottom of Gas Works Street bear right towards the pedestrian crossing.
St Andrew's Road Pedestrian Crossing to Stadium Way
- There are dropped kerbs at this crossing point.
- The dropped kerbs have no tactile paving.
- The surface of each crossing point is tarmac.
- The road surface is tarmac.
- There are no visual indicators at this crossing.
- After completing the crossing turn left and follow the path as it bears to the right onto Stadium Way.
Stadium Way to the Outer Concourse (via the Coach Park)
- Follow Stadium Way for approximately 220m until you reach the outer concourse.
- There is step-free access along Stadium Way.
- The surface of the path is tarmac.
- After approximately 60m you will need to cross to the opposite side of the road.
- There is no designated crossing point here; however there are dropped kerbs on either side of the road.
- The dropped kerbs have no tactile paving.
- Caution is advised because there are two access roads next to the crossing area.
- After you have crossed the road turn right and follow the path for approximately 75m until you reach the car park entrance sign.
- The sign says ‘Nearly There’.
- Turn left at the bollards and continue along Stadium Way.
- The width between the bollards is 75cm+.
- The bollards contrast with the floor.
- The pathway will reach the coach park.
- Continue along the path across the coach park.
- Caution is advised on a matchday due to traffic.
- After crossing the coach park turn left and follow the path to the outer concourse.
- There is a steep slope leading from the path to the Abzorb Stand .
- The surface of the path is tarmac.
- There is then a crossing leading to the Revell Ward Stand, the Fantastic Media and the LV= Britannia Rescue Stand.
- Access to these stands is via a steep slope on the path.
Outer Concourse
- The main outer concourse areas are located on the outside of the Big Red Stand, the Core Stand and the Magic Rock Brewing Stand.
There is step-free access throughout the concourse areas.
The surface of the flooring varies between tarmac and block paving.
There are 15+ medium height steps between the Core Stand and the Magic Rock Brewing Stand. There is a steep ramp which can be used to overcome these steps.
There are dropped kerbs located around the outer concourse areas between the roads and the pathways. - There are food and drink stands located around the outer concourse.
There are programme stalls located around the outer concourse. - Clear directional signage is not provided on the concourse.
- There is not a stadium plan/map on the concourse.
- There is a steward/member of staff available for assistance on matchdays.
