  • IWM Duxford is a living airfield with a history that stretches back to the First World War. Walk through the same hangars and buildings as those who served at RAF Duxford and see an extraordinary collection of historic aircraft take to the air.

Getting to IWM Duxford and Useful Information

East Car Park and Visitor Centre

Visit Planning Point

  • The Visit Planning Point is located within 1. Airspace.
  • There is step free access to 1. Airspace and there are automatic doors to access the building.
  • There is step free access throughout the area.
  • The surface of the flooring is vinyl.
  • There are members of staff available to provide assistance and information.
  • There are large maps of the site.
  • There is an RNIB Braille and tactile map of the site.
  • There is an information screen detailing events taking place.
  • There is a portable hearing loop available.
  • There are information leaflets and maps available.
  • The height of the counter for the leaflets is 75cm.

Getting Around (Duxford)

  • Access View
    • There is step-free access throughout the area.
    • The surface of the paths around the IWM Duxford vary between tarmac, concrete and block paving.
      There is step free access on the majority of paths, there are some slopes leading towards the American Airspace and Land Warfare.
      There are some very slight and slight slopes in places.
      The shuttle box has a drop off point next to the entrance to the American Airspace.
      There are large grass lawn areas in places.
      The IWM Duxford site is spread out over a large area. There is finger post directional signage which include a map and approximate distances to key attractions.
      The IWM Duxford site is a working airfield, so caution is advised due to vehicles driving around the site.
      There is a Braille and tactile map of the side. It is located as you enter the site from the visitor centre and it is left of the large map.
      There are wooden benches located around the site at regular intervals.
      There are picnic benches located around the site.

    • There is bench seating at regular intervals.

Shuttle Bus

  • Due to the large nature of the site there are two shuttle buses available to transport visitors around the site.
  • Visitors are picked up and dropped off near to the entrance to the Hangars.
  • The accessible bus is the blue bus.
  • Access onto the bus is via a steep ramp.
  • The width of the ramp is 80cm.
  • The bus driver can provide assistance boarding and disembarking the bus.
  • There is a dedicated area at the front of the bus for a wheelchair user.
  • The green bus has stepped access only.

Historic Duxford Information Points

  • There are Historic Duxford Information Points located around the site at key points.
  • The information points provide an audio commentary about the nearby area or exhibition.
  • The audio is activated by a wind up control.
  • The controls are at a low level.
  • There is a hearing loop fitted at all information points.
  • The hearing loop is clearly signed.
  • The hearing loops were tested and fully functional during surveying.

Eating and Drinking

Playground

  • The playground is located next to the Armoury Cafe and Kitchen.
  • There is step-free access to the playground.
  • There is a concrete path leading to the playground.
  • Access into the playground is via a single gate.
  • The gate opens away from you (push) and is over 75cm wide.
  • There is step-free access throughout the playground.
  • The surface of the flooring is padded safety mat surface.
  • Some of the playground equipment require stepped access or transferring from a wheelchair.

Spitfire Seating Area

  • The Spitfire seating area is located between the Battle of Britain Hanger and Hanger 5.
  • There is step free access to the seating area.
  • There is a Spitfire located at the centre of the seating area.
  • There are low level information boards next to the Spitfire.
  • There is bench seating available, some of the seating has a back rest.

Duxford Aviation Society Aircraft

  • There are a number of commercial aircraft located on the tarmac area opposite Hangars 4 and 5.
  • There is step-free access around the aircraft.
  • The Aircraft are operated by Duxford Aviation Society on some days and during events the aircraft are open for visitors to have a look around.
  • There is stepped access to all aircraft with handrails on both sides.
  • The number of steps varies depending on the aircraft.

Essex Aviation Group

  • The Essex Aviation Group is located at the front of Hangar 4.
  • The Essex Aviation Group is only open on weekends.
  • There is step-free access to building.
  • The path leading up to the entrance has a grass entrance.
  • The door opens towards you (pull) and has an opening width of 130cm.
  • There is step-free access throughout the room.
  • There are information boards located throughout the room.
  • The surface of the flooring is carpet and vinyl.

Duxford Radio Society

  • The Duxford Radio Society is located between Hangars 5 and 7.
  • There is step-free access to the buildings.
  • There are two buildings.
  • Building 177 is accessed by double doors that are held open and have an opening width of 177cm.
  • The surface of the flooring is tiles.
  • There is a Morse Code Station.
  • Building 178 is accessed by double doors that are held open and have an opening width of 140cm.
  • The height of the exhibitions varies between 75cm and 90cm.

Prefab Bungalow

  • The Prefab Bungalow is located along the path leading from Hangar 5 to Hangar 7.
  • There is a finger post sign located on the main path.
  • There is concrete path leading down to the Prefab Bungalow.
  • There is an information board about the Bungalow.
  • There is a window to view inside the Bungalow.

Royal Anglian Regiment Memorial

  • The Royal Anglian Memorial is located off the path leading from Hangar 7 to Hangar 8.
  • There is an information board about the memorial next to the main path.
  • The path leading from the main path the memorial has a grass surface with a plastic mesh.
  • There is step-free access along the path.
  • The surface at the Memorial is block paving.

Tank Arena

  • The Tank Arena is located at the rear of Hangar 8.
  • The Tank Arena is open on certain days and events.
  • The Tank Arena offers rides in tanks.
  • The height of the ticket counter is 100cm.
  • There is a gate to access the path leading to the Tank Arena.
  • The gate opens away from you (push) and has an opening width of 120cm.
  • There is a concrete path leading to the Tank Arena and the boarding point into the tanks.
  • There is slight slope onto the path.
  • Safety Helmets and Googles are provided.
  • There is hatch into the tank. The hatch is 90cm wide.
  • There are two steps into the tank. The first step is 20cm and the second step is 40cm.
  • Once inside the tank there is a 26cm step onto the platform to stand on. The tank has a low ceiling.
  • Once on the platform there are handrails to hold onto whilst the tank is moving.
  • There is a viewing area overlooking the Tank Arena.
  • The path to the viewing area is located to the left of the ticket counter.
  • The surface of the path is block paving.
  • There is a slight slope with handrails on both sides leading up to the viewing area.
  • There is bench seating in the viewing area.
