Introduction

• The following information describes the route from the Rose Bowl to Leeds Town Hall and then to Victoria Gardens.
• The approximate distance of this route is 400m.
• The route takes approximately 4-5 minutes.
• The route leads along Portland Crescent, past the Civic Hall, through Millennium Square, down Calverley Street to the Town Hall accessible entrance.
• The majority of paths along the route have a flagstone paving surface.
• The potential hazards on this route include; congested pathways, uneven paving, street signs, bollards and steep/downhill slopes.

The Rose Bowl

• The Rose Bowl is the University's flagship development and a landmark for the City of Leeds. This is a state of the art building, offering conferencing, banquets, exhibitions, computer rooms, receptions, training, meetings, various teaching rooms, business centre and has a restaurant open to all.

Exiting the Rose Bowl

• The route starts in the main reception area (Photographs 1 and 2).
• Exit the reception area via the automatic doors outside the Staff Office (Photographs 3 and 4).
• This exit is located on the opposite side of the reception area to the Food Court.
• The area immediately outside the exit has a flagstone paving surface (Photograph 5).

The Rose Bowl to Portland Crescent

• After exiting the Rose Bowl reception area bear diagonally left around the front edge of the building past the bins (Photographs 1 and 2).
• As you turn left you will see a cycle rack under the recess (Photograph 2).
• Proceed straight ahead with the cycle rack on your left and the car park on your right (Photographs 3 and 4).
• There is a flagstone paving surface along this section which is level.
• When you pass a pillar just past the cycle rack bear diagonally right towards the information board at the entrance to the car park (Photographs 4 and 5).
• Pass between the bollard and the information board and turn right (Photograph 6).
• The gap between the bollard and the information board is 120cm (Photograph 6).
• The bollard does not have a good colour contrast with the paving.
• Cross the Civic Hall car park access road (Photograph 6).
• There are dropped kerbs on both sides of the crossing but not tactile paving (Photograph 7).
• Take care of traffic approaching from the right then the left as you cross the access road.
• At the far side of the access road re-join the Portland Crescent footpath.
• You will see the Civic Hall to the right (Photograph 7).
• This section of the route is approximately 50 metres.

Civic Hall to Millennium Square

• Proceed along Portland Crescent footpath, you may be able to see Leeds Town Hall clocktower in the distance (Photographs 1 and 2).
• The footpath has a flagstone paving surface and slopes downhill towards Millennium Square.
• You will pass the entrance to the Civic Hall on the right approximately 30 metres after crossing the car park access road (Photograph 4).
• Just before you pass the entrance there are some bollards (Photograph 3).
• The gap past the bollards in 142cm.
• The bollards have a good visual contrast with the paving.
• Continue along the path to the right of the line of centrally planted trees (Photographs 5, 6 and 7).
• You will then reach Millennium Square (Photograph 8).
• This section of the route is approximately 90 metres.

Millennium Square

• Millennium Square is Leeds’ award-winning city centre outdoor public space and live entertainment venue.
• The square is also home to the Leeds Big Screen, regularly showing live major sporting events including Wimbledon Tennis Championships and World Cup and European Championship Football plus various theatrical screenings and other cultural and local content. (Photographs 1 and 2)

Millennium Square to Calverley Street Crossing

• Enter Millennium Square and proceed straight ahead until you pass a pillar with a Golden Owl statue on it (Photographs 1 and 2).
• After passing the pillar bear diagonally towards the far right corner of Millennium Square (Photographs 3 and 4).
• The paving in Millennium Square is level and slopes very slightly downhill.
• There is bench seating in Millennium Square.
• In the far right corner, after approximately 50 metres, you will find the exit into Calverley Street (Photographs 5 and 6).
• In the exit there is a central removeable bollard with horizontal handles (Photograph 6).
• The bollard has only a moderate visual contrast with the paving and care should be taken of the protruding handles.
• After exiting Millennium Square turn left and follow the Calverley Street path (Photographs 7 to 10) until you reach a traffic light crossing (Photograph 10).
• The flagstone paving is slightly uneven on the section past the Millennium Square wall (Photograph 9).
• The traffic light crossing is located next to Mandela Gardens (Photograph 11).
• This section of the route is approximately 75 metres.

Calverley Street Crossing

• Turn right at the crossing and use it to cross Calverley Street, turning left at the far side to cross the next lane (Photographs 1 to 5).
• The height of the crossing control push buttons are 114cm.
• The crossing controls have a rotating cone underneath.
• All crossings have dropped kerbs and tactile paving.

Calverley Street Crossing to Great George Street Crossing

• After crossing Calverley Street turn left and follow the path.
• There is a short section where the path is uneven and has a right to left cross slope (Photograph 1).
• After that it is even with a slight downhill slope (Photographs 2 and 3).
• The path has a flagstone paving surface (Photographs 2 and 3).
• After approximately 20m the path bends around to the right into Great George Street (Photograph 4 and 5).
• This section has a short steep slope (Photograph 5).
• Turn left at the traffic light crossing outside the Shenanigans pub (Photographs 5 and 6).
• This section of the route is approximately 25 metres.

Great George Street Crossing

• Use traffic light crossing to cross Great George Street.
• The height of the crossing control push buttons are 116cm.
• The crossing controls have a rotating cone underneath.
• There are dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.

George Street Crossing to Leeds Town Hall

• At the far side of the crossing bear diagonally left around the left of the Town Hall and follow the Calverley Street path (Photographs 1 and 2).
• Continue along the path for approximately 75m (Photographs 3 to 7) until you reach the front of the Town Hall where some bollards are located on the right (Photographs 7 and 8).
• Care should be taken along this section of the path as there are some street signs in the centre of the pavement (Photographs 3 and 4).
• Turn right and pass between the bollards (Photograph 8).
• The gap between the bollards is 170cm.
• The bollards have a good visual contrast with the paving.
• After the bollards the paving is slightly uneven (Photographs 8 and 9).
• The accessible entrance to the Town Hall is 5m past the bollards on the right hand side (Photograph 10).
• This section of the route is approximately 120 metres.

Leeds Town Hall to Victoria Gardens

• Exit the Town Hall via the same doors (Photographs 1 and 2).
• Go through the bollards again (Photograph 3) back to the Calverley Street path and turn left.
• Turn right at the strip of tactile paving and cross Calverley Street at the traffic lights (Photographs 4 and 5).
• The height of the crossing control push buttons are 112cm.
• The crossing controls have a rotating cone underneath.
• At the far side of the crossing turn left then immediately right through the bollards into Victoria Gardens (Photographs 6 and 7).
• Victoria Gardens is the civic space outside Leeds Art Gallery.

• The minimum gap between the bollards is 148cm.
• The bollards have a good visual contrast with the paving.
• After the bollards turn right and proceed straight ahead.
• Victoria Gardens is an open space with a tarmac and flagstone paving surface (Photographs 9 and 10).
• The paving can be slightly uneven in places.
• At the time of the survey the route from the bollards to the main part of the open space was obstructed by vehicles (Photograph 8).
• This section of the route is approximately 40 metres.
