Access Guide
Calcutta Complex
- Calcutta House is part of the Calcutta Complex.
- There are internal links to Goulston Street, Wash Houses and Calcutta House Annexe.
- There is also an entrance to the Complex on Goulston Street.
- Wash Houses is located centrally to the Complex with access from either of the Calcutta House or Goulston Street entrances.
- The Calcutta Annexe is accessed internally through Calcutta House.
- There is not step-free access to the Calcutta Annexe from any entrance.
- The Old Castle Street entrance to Calcutta House was not in use at the time of survey (August 2023).

Getting Here

By Road
View
- Take the A13 west towards London from the Mar Dyke Interchange in Thurrock by the Dartford Crossing (junction 30 on the M25).
There are various roundabouts but stay on the A13 for 16.7 miles until the A13 meets the A11, Whitechapel High Street.
Turn left onto the A11 and the university entrances are 200m along on the right-hand side on Old Castle Street and Goulston Street.
There are various possible routes from the north or west, with the main roads leading towards the university being the A501 and A10. - Due to our central London location, parking is limited around the University.
There is an NCP car park close to the Aldgate campus and limited street parking only near the Holloway campus.
If you're a blue badge holder and require a disabled parking space, please email [email protected].
There are on-street Blue Badge bays directly outside the Aldgate campus' Old Castle Street entrance.
The closest public car park to the university is directly opposite where the A13 meets the A11, however there is no direct access into it from the A13.

The pavement on the opposite side of the road to the building also has a very slight slope and lampposts reduce the minimum width to 95cm.
The road is raised to pavement level by the entrance to Calcutta House so there is no level change (photographs 4-6).
Therefore the pavement has level access to the building only on one side of the road. - There is step-free access on the approach.

Getting Around (Calcutta House)

- There is sloped/ramped access to half of the ground/1st floor of the Aldgate Library, the female toilets to the rear of the 1st floor of the library and the multi-faith prayer room on the 5th floor of the Calcutta House S2 staircase.
- There is stepped access to Calcutta Annexe either via the external entrances or via Calcutta House.
- There is no lift/step-free access to the majority of basement, with only a few studios to left of the rear lift accessible via 2 slight ramps.
The majority of the basement (the bench workshop, digital manufacturing, film studios, music technology, photography dark rooms/studios, sound studios, rooms CMB-01 to CMB-49 and the male/female toilets) has stepped access as detailed in the level change section.

The AAD (Art, Architecture and Design) Office is on the ground floor close to the entrance from Goulston Street. It is signed as the Aldgate Hub (old signage) and is shown in photographs 14-18.
The AAD office deals with Student queries and has a Reception desk which is 76cm high with a 73cm knee recess.
There are bookable rooms which are used by Students, Academic Mentors for 1 on 1's and by the Disabilities and Dyslexia service (DDS).

- There are a couple services on the ground floor of the Library in the Learning Centre (Holloway Campus) and Calcutta House (Aldgate Campus).
They provide information or help Students with technical or other issues (Techsmart Desk and Library Services/ Information).
The services are also available online for Students from either Campus.
The TechSmart desk can help with various issues such as changing passwords, printer access, Wi-Fi access, weblearn queries, evision queries (accessing journals/ books away from the University) and can provide information on available software and laptop loans.
