Introduction

  • This route describes how to get from Clement House to Temple Underground station.
  • A distance is approximately 0.2 miles which includes easy slopes as well as tarmac, brick block and block paved areas. The route can also expect to be congested with pedestrians as this is a particularly busy area.

Exit Clement House and turn left onto Aldwych

  • Upon exiting the building, turn left and head towards the phone box and crossing ahead. It is approximately 40m from the building.
  • There is a slight downhill gradient.
  • The surface of the pavement is primarily block paving.
  • To your left-hand side of the pavement there is a section precast glass block flooring (concrete with inlaid glass) and to your right around a tree a section of resin bound gravel.
  • There is Legible London map close to the crossing.

Cross over the A4 to the central reservation

  • The crossing is located after a phone box on the right-hand side.
  • The block-paved pavement is level with the tarmac road.
  • There is no tactile paving.
  • There are no road markings and no lights. Pedestrians should look right and be careful when crossing to the central reservation.

Central Reservation

  • The road is level with the central reservation.
  • There is block paving with the occasional manhole cover on this central reservation. There is bench seating around the monument in the central reservation.
  • The reservation is mostly level with a very slight slope by the stepped (3 steps) monument.
  • Continue to the pedestrian crossing directly ahead.

Cross the A4 from the reservation towards Arundel Street

  • The road is level with the pavement at this crossing, with a slight slope once across the road. There is tactile paving on both sides.
  • The rotating cone is based underneath the push button box on the right hand side of the crossing.
  • Once across, head straight forward along Arundel Street.

Head forward along Arundel Street for 95m

  • Head past the crossing across Arundel Street on the right and head down Arundel Street, which has a downward slope.
  • There are steps to the left of the pavement with tactile paving in front of them.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.
  • There are bicycle racks and trees to the side of the pavement. The area around the trees consists of resin bound gravel.
  • After 95m you will reach Tweezer's Alley.

Cross Tweezers Alley

  • Head across Tweezer's Alley and continue along Arundel Street.
  • There is a dropped kerb on either side of Tweezers Alley making the road is level with the pavement.
  • There is no tactile paving.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • There is a downward slope.

Continue down Arundel Street for 65m

  • Continue down the easy slope, past the Santander Cycles and Legible London signage on the right.
  • After 26m you will encounter an unnamed service road which is tarmac. It has a dropped kerb on one side, and the pavement is level with the road on the other side.
  • After this continue down Arundel Street until you reach Temple Place, and turn left towards the crossing.
  • There surface is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.

Cross Temple Place

  • Turn left and head immediately to the pedestrian crossing across Temple Place.
  • There are controls at the traffic lights including a rotating cone to the right of the crossing.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • Traffic approaches from either side.
  • There are dropped kerbs and tactile paving on either side of the road, with short slight tarmac slopes onto road level.

Temple Place to Victoria Embankment

  • Turn right and head to the Victoria Embankment Gardens which is next to the crossing.
  • The surface of the pavement before the gardens is block paving and within them it is resin bound gravel/ concrete.
  • Upon reaching the gardens turn left head into the gardens and head down the easy slope towards Victoria Embankment. The surface is uneven in areas.
  • The gates are 265cm wide.

Turn right and then right again and head to Temple Station

  • Turn right out of the gardens and head through the bollards which have a minimum width of 120cm.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.
  • After passing the bollards the Station will be located to your left.
  • There is a Legible London sign by the station.
