COVID-19 Information

  • The information in this section was taken in November 2020.
  • The National Museum of Scotland continues to provide free entry to all Visitors, however do now have restricted access in order to maintain social distancing and a safe, enjoyable environment for all.
  • Currently some galleries remain closed, and will re-open in a phased approach when able to do so safely. As such, all visitors to the museum, including carers and children under the age of 5, are required to book a ticket in advance for their visit. This can be done online via the website.
    For Visitors who do not have access to the internet they may book their tickets by telephone.
    Currently the museum is unable to accommodate groups of more than 6 from one household at this time.
  • The National Museum of Scotland is currently operating with a temporary change to the standard opening hours. Currently the opening times are 10:30 until 16:30. However, as this is subject to change please check the website for accurate, up to date information.
  • There are two entry points at the museum, the Tower Entrance and the Main Entrance on Chambers Street.
  • The Tower Entrance is the designated accessible entrance. There is a member of staff greeting at the door and directing visitors inside for check-in.
  • The Main Entrance on Chambers Street is signposted with external signage and an external queuing system with social distance ground markings. There is a member of staff greeting in this area and managing the queue to permit safe entry for all ticket holders.
  • There is a one way system in place, and therefore there is one main entrance only door and one main exit door based on Chambers Street. The door to the west of the Main Entrance Hall is the entrance route and the door to the east is the exit route.
    The revolving doors are not currently in use at these points, only the automatic doors.
    The Tower Entrance is the designated accessible entrance which can be used for both entrance and exit.
  • Additional hand sanitising stations have been installed at all entry and exit points, at entry to shops and cafes, and throughout the galleries on each floor of the museum.
  • There is restricted capacity of the number of people who can be in the building at any one time. Due to this, a timed, ticketed entry system has been introduced.
  • Entry to the museum is still free, however tickets must be purchased online prior to visiting to secure entry. The museum is able to support those who may need additional help in booking tickets in exceptional circumstances. There is a dedicated ticketing phone line to support this.
  • A one way system has been implemented throughout the galleries on each level to support social distancing.
  • Staff are in place to direct and guide, along with signage, new adapted maps (in paper and online) and hand sanitising units.
  • Signage has been posted at various points around the museum reminding all to maintain 2m distance from others, wear a face mask and wash their hands often. Signage is also posted on lifts and seating to advise only one household.
  • Protective screens have been added to all information desk points, the new check-in podium, cafes and shops.
  • Currently there are no cloakroom or picnic spaces available for use.
  • Visitors wishing to eat or drink during their visit can use the Balcony Café. There are also a selection of family and mindfulness trails available online and on paper when visiting the museum to enhance your visit.
  • There are no changes to the availability of toilet facilities. Toilets continue to be available on all levels that are open, along with the accessible and Changing Places toilets.
  • There are no changes to the availability of changing facilities. Changing facilities continue to be available on all levels that are open.
  • Tickets are required to enter the building, and members of the public are not permitted to enter the building merely to use the toilet/changing facilities without a ticket for entry.
  • Face masks/coverings must be worn indoors at all times unless exempt.
  • Additional Information
    - Tickets should be purchased in advance via the website at which point contact details will be recorded and stored securely for 21 days after the visit.
    - Contact details are required for at least one member of the party.
    - Contactless card transactions are preferred on site.
    - Assistance dogs are still permitted on site but must be kept on a lead.
