Access Guide
Introduction
- The following information describes the route from St James Metro Station to St James’ Park.
- The route leads along Gallowgate and Strawberry Place.
- The approximate distance of this route is 100m.
- The route takes approximately 2-4 minutes.
- The majority of paths along the route consist of tarmac and flagstone paving.
- The potential hazards on this route include; congested pathways and uneven surfaces.
St James Metro Station
- There is step-free access via lift, from the station platforms to the entrances/exits.
- There is step-free access when exiting the station.
- The station does not have its own car park, however there is a public car park within 200m.
- There are no accessible toilets at this station.

St James Metro Station to Gallowgate/Strawberry Place
- After exiting St James Metro Station turn right and follow the path through the car park for approximately 40m. You reach the ramp or steps leading up to Gallowgate.
- There is a slight ramp leading up from the car park to Gallowgate.
- The ramp has handrails on the left going up.
- There are 15+ steps leading from the car park to Strawberry Place.
- The steps are medium height with handrails on both sides.
Gallowgate/Strawberry Place to the Outer Concourse
- At the top of the ramp turn left onto Gallowgate and follow the path towards Strawberry Place for approximately 40m, then turn right onto Strawberry Place.
- There is a slight slope along the path up Gallowgate.
- Follow the path along Strawberry Place for approximately 10muntil you reach the pedestrian crossing.
- The pedestrian crossing has tactile paving on both sides.
- After completing the crossing turn right and follow Strawberry Place for approximately 5m and turn left.
- Here you will join the outer concourse.
- On matchdays there is a lift located next to the NINE Sports Bar which can be used for access to the Gallowgate Stand and the East Stand.
Outer Concourse
- There is step-free access along the majority of the outer concourse.
There are some slight slopes in places.
The majority of surfaces consist of; block paving or tarmac. - There are food and drink stands located around the outer concourse.
There are programme stalls located around the outer concourse. - The crowd corridor is a sheltered part of the outer concourse which is underneath the Milburn Stand and Leazes Stand. The crowd corridor can be very congested in the build up to kick-off.
There is a steep slope leading from Strawberry Place up to the crowd corridor. The steep slope is overcome by accessing the crowd corridor from the matchday car park or from Leazes Terrace.
There are 15+ steps leading from Strawberry Place up to the Gallowgate part of the concourse. The steps are overcome by using a ramp located on the outer concourse next to the East Stand. The ramp has a very easy gradient with handrails on both sides.
There is a lift (Accessible Entrance 10) located on Strawberry Place next to the NINE Sports Bar and Lounge which can be used to access the outer concourse. - The concourse is very congested at full time.
- Clear directional signage is provided on the concourse.
- There is a stadium plan/map on the concourse.
- There is a steward/member of staff available for assistance on match days.
