Access Guide
Introduction
- This route is from the Cwrt Mawr Hub to the Pantycelyn Building.
- This route is via university access roads and paths.
- This route passes through the Rosser and Cwrt Mawr accommodation areas as well as the Rosser Lounge, Parry Williams, Pantycelyn-Penbryn, Penbryn, TaMed Da, Hugh Owen, Visualisation Centre and Cledwyn buildings.
- This route is approximately 1km long and takes approximately 12 minutes on foot.
- The main hazards on this route are steep slopes, congested pavement areas and uncontrolled road crossings.
Cwrt Mawr Hub to the Rosser Lounge
- Exit the Cwrt Mawr Hub accessible entrance to the right down the slight slope.
- This area has an even concrete slab surface.
- Follow the path right at the edge of the building and continue for approximately 50m along the side of the building.
- At the end of the path turn left.
- The pavement continues in the same condition.
- After approximately 10m the path rises slightly to a slight gradient, as shown in photograph 7.
- Follow the path round to the left at the top of the rise.
- After approximately 50m turn left to follow the path, shown in photographs 10 and 11, around the rear of the Rosser D Block.
- This path has a slight gradient, with an even concrete block surface.
- After approximately 15m turn right to follow the path, shown in photograph 12, around the Rosser D Block.
- Take the second path on the right, shown in photographs 13 and 14, and follow the path around to the right.
- Once past the front of Rosser D there is a steep slope 120cm wide with an even concrete slab surface and a handrail on right as you go up the slope.
- This ramp is shown in photographs 18 and 19.
- Go past the Rosser Lounge, located on the right and shown in photograph 20.
Rosser Lounge to Parry Williams Slope
- Continue past the Rosser Lounge main entrance.
- This area has a level and uneven concrete block surface, as shown in photograph 1.
- After approximately 10m head down the hill path directly ahead.
- There is a lamppost in the centre of path as shown in photographs 2 and 3.
- The hill path has an uneven concrete surface 120cm wide and a steep slope down away from you.
- There are metal drain covers after approximately 5m.
- After 20m the path bears left.
- The gradient continues down the path with an uneven concrete surface. The path is 140cm wide with metal drain covers after approximately 10m.
- The path levels after approximately 25m and bears left past the front of the Parry Williams Building.
- As you pass the front of the Parry Williams Building, keep to the right of the path to avoid a series of steps running along the front of the building.
- These steps are deep and unmarked and shown in photograph 9.
- The path along the front of the Parry Williams Building has a slight gradient downhill away from you which is 150cm wide with an even concrete surface.
- Once beyond the Parry Williams Building follow the path down the hill and back on itself round to the right and continue down the slope.
- The gradient continues with an even concrete surface, there are multiple manhole covers within the first 10m.
- This slope is shown in photographs 10, 11, 12 and 13.
- At the end of the slope turn round to the left and follow the pavement along the side of road.
- This has an uneven, level tarmac surface.
Parry-Williams slope to Main Campus Entrance Road
- At the bottom of the slope in front of the Parry Williams Building, turn left to follow the pavement.
- Turn right after 5m to cross the road.
- This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
- This crossing is shown in photographs 2 and 3.
- After crossing turn left and follow the path down the hill around to the right.
- This path has an even tarmac surface with a steep gradient.
- There is a handrail on the left going up around the steepest section of the slope around the corner, this is shown in photograph 5.
- The handrail ends as the path straightens. The gradient also eases slightly but remains steep.
- After approximately 60m the road bends left and crosses a small access road, as shown in photographs 8 and 9.
- This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
- There is a high threshold on the dropped kerb on the far side, ranging between 3 and 5cm.
- Continue along the road bearing around to the left.
- After approximately 30m cross the car park access at the rear of the TaMed Da restaurant.
- This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- This crossing is shown in photographs 11 and 12.
- Turn right after this crossing for access to Penbryn, Pantycelyn-Penbryn and the Conference Office, shown in photograph 13.
- Proceed straight after crossing.
- Approximately 10m after the crossing the path changes to brick block, indicating the outside TaMed Da entrance, as shown in photograph 16.
- After approximately 10m cross the access road at rear of main campus reception.
- This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides and is shown in photographs 17 and 18.
- For access to Hugh Owen proceed to the end of the path and cross the road on your left using the crossing with tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both side. Head back up the hill on your left after crossing and follow the path around to right to the Hugh Owen Main Entrance.
Main Campus Entrance Road to Visualisation Centre
- Follow the pavement around to the right as you reach the main campus entrance road.
- Turn right to cross the main campus entrance road as the road straightens.
- This crossing is a split zebra crossing with level access and tactile paving on both sides and a level central island with tactile paving.
- This crossing is shown in photographs 1, 2 ,3, 4 and 5.
- After the crossing turn right and follow the pavement.
- This pavement has an uneven, level tarmac surface.
- At the end of the road continue straight ahead and cross the access road.
- This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
- This crossing is shown in photographs 7 and 8.
- After crossing turn left to follow the path downhill.
- This pavement has an even, tarmac surface with a steep gradient leading down away from you.
- The pavement bends in to the right around a bus stop. This area of pavement may get congested during peak times.
- Approximately 15m beyond the bus stop there is a strip of tactile paving as the path turns right and sweeps round to the left in a large arc to pass in front of the Visualisation Centre.
Visualisation Centre to Pantycelyn
- After passing in front of the Visualisation Centre cross the road directly in front of you.
- This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- This crossing is shown in photographs 2 and 3.
- After crossing turn right down the side of the Cledwyn Building.
- The pavement has an even tarmac surface with a slight gradient and is 135cm wide.
- Approximately 10m beyond end of building the path drops down to a steep gradient.
- At the end of the path is a dropped kerb with tactile paving which leads into the Visualisation Centre car park.
- This is shown in photographs 6, 7 and 8.
- Cross the car park to the path ahead and slightly right off the far side of the car park.
- The path exits the car park leading straight into 3 deep steps with tactile paving at the top and bottom. These steps are well marked with no hand rails
- There is a ramp to bypass the steps located on the left. This ramp has an easy gradient.
- This level change is shown in photographs 9, 10 and 11.
- After exiting the ramp turn left to follow the path.
- The path has an even tarmac surface with a slight gradient.
- After approximately 70m the path ends. There is a series of metal fences blocking off half the path to slow cyclists, as shown in photograph 15.
- At the fences turn round to the left onto a ramp leading into the Pantycelyn car park.
- This ramp has an easy gradient with an even tarmac surface.
- This ramp is shown in photographs 16 and 17.
- Turn right at the bottom of the ramp and cross the car park, shown in photograph 18, to the exit road on the far side, directly ahead.
- The car park has an uneven, level tarmac surface.
- The exit road, shown in photograph 19, curls around to the right leading to the front centre of Pantycelyn.
