Introduction

  • This guide and its linked guides, describes the shopping and leisure area of Twickenham in the South West of London.
    This guide describes the area from London Road to Heath Road.
    London Road runs north/south and then becomes King Street which joins onto Heath Road.
    King Street and Heath Road run east/west.
    The route for the Twickenham shopping area is approximately 740m (0.45 miles) long and will take approximately 10 minutes to walk.
    The Twickenham shopping area is generally level or with slight slopes.
    Potential hazards include: A-board signs, parked cycles on the pavement and uncontrolled crossing points at side roads.

Getting Here

  • By Car
  • The A316 connects with London Road to the north and to the west it connects to Heath Road.
  • The A305 Richmond Road to the east connects London Road and King Street to Heath Road.
  • Parking
  • There is limited standard on-street parking throughout.
  • Along Queens Road there is one Blue Badge bay.
  • By Bus
  • There are bus stops on either side of the High Street which serve many routes to the surrounding areas.
  • By Train
  • The nearest train station is Twickenham.
  • This train station is located on London Road, at the northern end of the shopping area.
  • The station is served by South Western Railway.
  • Access may also vary at busy times on local football match days.
  • There is a long slope which leads uphill from the shopping area to the station.
  • There are several bus routes connecting the station with the shopping area.

Parking

  • Car Parks
  • There are three public car parks close to the shopping area.
  • 1. Arragon Road multi-storey car park, TW1 3NG (includes Blue Badge parking bays)
  • 2. Church Lane car park, TW1 3NX.
  • 3. Holly Road car park, TW1 4HF (includes Blue Badge parking bays)
  • On-street parking
  • There is one free Blue Badge parking bay in the side road Queen's Road, close to the junction with Heath Road.
  • The bay is in a layby 240cm wide, and is level with the pavement.
  • Parking is limited to three hours (photographs 1 and 2).
  • There are time-limited on-street pay and display or pay by phone parking bays on London Road and Heath Road.

Crossing Points - London Road, Arragon Road and Station Approach

  • At the northern end of London Road, near to the station, there is a pedestrian controlled crossing point on the main road (photographs 1 to 3).
  • This crossing is near to the Regal House building, and The Cabbage Patch pub.
  • There are slight dropped kerbs with tactile paving to both sides of the road.
  • There is a central refuge with level surface and tactile paving.
  • The crossing controls are audible and visual and have a rotating cone underneath for visually impaired users.
  • There is a similar controlled crossing at the side road, Arragon Road on the east side (left side going downhill) of London Road (photograph 4).
  • This crossing does not have a central refuge.
  • On the west side (left-hand side going uphill) of London Road is the side road, Station Approach (photographs 8 and 9).
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving to both sides of the road.
  • There is also a central refuge with tactile paving so the road can be crossed in two sections.
  • Traffic turning out of Railway Approach onto London Road is controlled by traffic lights.
  • There may still be traffic turning into Station Approach when other traffic is stopped.
  • There is some bench seating in this area (photograph 10).
  • There is also a finger-post directional sign on the corner of London Road and Arragon Road (photograph 11).

London Road - Arragon Road to York Street

  • The surface here is formed of level and even concrete slabs with occasional compacted gravel beneath trees which may be uneven in places (photographs 1 and 2).
  • London Road Twickenham Stop F serving bus routes 267, 281, 290, 681 and H22 is outside Waitrose (photograph 3).
  • London Road Twickenham Stop E, serving bus routes 267, 281, 681 and H22 is outside The Timberyard pub on the opposite side of the road.
  • There is a defibrillator facility, a standard telephone box, and an ATM outside Waitrose (photographs 4 and 5).
  • There is also some bench seating in the area (photograph 6).
  • At Katharine Road, off the east (left) side of London Road, there is pedestrian access to the Garfield Road public garden with grassed areas and bench seating (photographs 7 and 8).
  • There is a slope with a very easy incline towards Katharine Road from the main pavement.
  • There is a slope with a very easy incline into the Garfield Road public garden.
  • The main flooring here is compacted gravel and 72cm high bollards with a separation of 203cm (photograph 8).
  • On the main road, there is on-street parking set into lay-bys, some being flush with the pavement (photographs 10 and 11).
  • There is a map signpost in this area (photograph 11).
  • Twickenham Police Station is on the opposite side of the road here (photograph 15).
  • There are cycle stands towards the outer edge of the pavement, and likely A-board signs outside of some businesses in this area (photographs 16 and 17).

Crossing Point - London Road near to Holly Road

  • There is a pedestrian controlled crossing point on London Road, close to Holly Road and the William Webb Ellis pub.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving to both sides of the road.
  • The controls have audible and visual signals and rotating cones underneath for visually impaired users.

Crossing Point Side Road Holly Road

  • There is a side road crossing on the opposite side of the road, between the Press Room coffee house and Bella Vita.
  • The crossing is formed of block paving, is flush with the pavement, and has tactile paving on both sides.
  • There may be obstacles after the crossing, such as A-boards, and chairs and tables.

Crossing Point - Junctions of London Road, York Street and King Street

  • At this junction, London Road and York Street combine into King Street.
  • There are crossing points just north of the junction on London Road (close to HSBC across to towards snappy snaps) and on York Street (HSBC towards Timpson).
  • Both crossings are level or with slight dropped kerbs and have tactile paving to both sides of the crossing.
  • The controls have audible and visual signals and rotating cones.
  • The crossing on London Road has a level central refuge marked with tactile paving and is crossed in two stages.

King Street - York Street to Wharf Lane

  • On the south side of King Street, between York Street and Water Lane, the pavement narrows to 115cm wide.
  • There are railings on the road-side of the path (photograph 1).
  • At the junction with the side road crossing with Water Lane, the block-paved road surface without tactile paving is level with the pavement (photograph 2).
  • South of Water Lane, the pavement widens and there is bench seating with armrests to the centre of the area and a route finding map (photographs 3 and 4).
  • There may be obstacles, such as A-boards and other displays outside shop fronts (photograph 5).
  • The pavement here is on a slope with a very easy incline.
  • There is cycle parking to the road side of the pavement outside Boots (photograph 6).
  • There was scaffolding between Boots and Wharf Lane at the time of survey (21/06/2023) (photograph 7).
  • The scaffolding served to cause a width restriction of 106cm outside Iceland (opposite WHSmith) (photograph 8).
  • There is a telephone box outside Iceland (phptopgraph 9).
  • At the side road, Wharf Lane, one-way traffic joins the main road from the south (photograph 10).
  • There is a level surface crossing point which is marked with tactile paving on both sides.
  • There are low bollards on the pavement on both sides of the junction.
  • On the north (right-hand) side of the road there is a level crossing over the entrance into Queen's Street between P Cooper & Sons Ltd grocers, and King Street Vets (photograph 11).
  • The crossing here is block paving that is flush with the pavement, with tactile paving.
  • The east (left-hand) pavement along Wharf Lane was obstructed by scaffolding at the time of survey (photograph 12).

Crossing Point - King Street near to Queen's Road

  • There is a pedestrian controlled crossing point on King Street, close to The George pub on the north (right) side and Boots Opticians on the south (left) side.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving to both sides of the road.
  • There is also a central refuge so that the road is crossed in two stages.
  • The controls have audible and visual signals and rotating cones underneath for visually impaired users.

Crossing Point - Junctions of King Street, Cross Deep and Heath Road

  • There is a T-junction with Cross Deep from the south, King Street to the east, and Heath Road to the west.
  • There are pedestrian controlled crossing points on all three sides of the junction.
  • All the crossings are level or have slight dropped kerbs marked with tactile paving on both sides of the road.
  • All the crossings also have a central refuge which has a flush surface marked with tactile paving.
  • The crossing controls are audible and visual.
  • There are rotating cones for visually impaired users on each side of the road.
  • The controls are timed to cross in two stages.
  • The crossings over Heath Road either side of Cross Deep are shown in photographs 1 to 4.
  • The crossing over Cross Deep is shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • There are route finding maps available at the crossings (photograph 7).

Heath Road - South Side - Cross Deep to Clifden Road

  • There are bus stops along Heath Road, Stops K and L serve routes 267, 281, 290, 490, 681, H22, N22 and R70 (photographs 2 and 3).
  • The pavement here is on a slope with a slight incline, with obstacles such as bins, tree trunks, and street cafĂ© seating on left (photographs 4 to 8).
  • Here the uneven pavement narrows between the shop fronts and street trees to a minimum width of 105cm (photograph 6).
  • There is a side road crossing at a service entrance, after which the pavement continues on a slope with a very easy incline (photograph 9).
  • There are cycle parking bars towards the road side outside Carpet 1st and Crown Decorating Centres (photograph 10).
  • The camber towards the road at the service entrance varies between slight to steep.

Heath Road - North Side - Cross Deep to Clifden Road

  • The pavement here is generally wide and level.
  • There are narrow stretches with street trees, and bench seating or chairs and tables outside shops (photographs 1 to 3).
  • There are cycles racks close to the road at edge of the pavement (photograph 3).
  • Heath Road Twickenham Stop T is situated outside 14c Heath Road and serves routes 267, 281, 290, 490, 681, H22, N22 and R70 (photographs 5 and 6).
  • There are side roads at Copthall Gardens and Holly Road with crossing points which are flush with the pavements with tactile paving.
  • The side road crossing between The Three Kings pub and Featherstone Leigh estate agents at Copthall Gardens is shown in photographs 7 and 8.
  • The side road crossing between Khao Thai Twickenham and Twickenham Charcoal Grill at Holly Road is shown in photographs 9 to 11.
  • There may be some uneven surfaces (photographs 12 and 13).
  • There is a defibrillator outside Amplifon hearing specialists.

Crossing Points - Heath Road - Copthall Gardens and Clifden Road

  • There is a pedestrian crossing point on Heath Road, east of Copthall Gardens, near to Richmond Dental Suite and The Three Kings pub opposite (photographs 1 to 4).
  • The pavements here have a camber towards the road outside Richmond Dental Suite, and away from the road outside The Three Kings pub.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing point on Heath Road, east of Clifden Road, near to D&M Tools and Sue Ryder opposite (photographs 5 to 8).
  • Both crossings feature dropped kerbs on a slope with a slight incline, to a central refuge on a level surface.
  • Both crossings are marked with tactile paving, with audible and visual crossing controls with a rotating cone underneath.
