Introduction
- The original Abbey church was much larger than the part which remains today.
- The Abbey was founded in 1183 and at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 began to fall into decay and some parts of the ruins can be seen in the churchyard.
- The Pegge family built a chapel in the nave, which is what we see today, in about 1671.
- The Abbey was eventually given to Sheffield City Council in 1931.
