About
View
- Crawford House is a large L-shaped building with seven floors.
- There are three lifts and three main staircases within the building.
The lifts near the Central and West, and the East entrances access the ground floor, the mezzanine level, and all upward floors (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5).
The lift near the Oxford Road entrance is only for the ground, mezzanine and first floors of the Collection Care Lab. - The floors are signed as G for the ground floor, M for the mezzanine level, 1 for the first floor, 2 for the second floor, and so on.
This is slightly different inside the lifts where control buttons are marked 0 instead of ground.
The floors in the stairwells are signed differently again as G for the ground floor, 1 for the mezzanine level, 2 for the first floor, 3 for the second floor and so on. - View information on Crawford House.

Opening Times
- The building is open 24 hours via swipe card.
Getting Inside
- The approach to the building is step-free via slight or very slight slopes.
- Crawford House has five entrances all of which provide step-free access to the ground floor for respective areas.
The most accessible entrance is the Central and West Entrance off Booth Street East, which also gives access to the University Counselling Service entrance.
The most accessible entrance from the Blue Badge parking bays is the Clifford Street entrance. - The entrances are signed as Central and West, University Counselling Service, Accessible Entrance and Oxford Road.
The other entrance in Clifford Street is not named or signed.
The Accessible Entrance does not provide general access to the ground floor areas of the building. - The Central and West entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor of the main building.
- The Central and West University Counselling Service entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor of University Counselling Service and lift.
The Clifford Street entrance provides step-free level access to the lower levels of Lecture Theatres 1 and 2, and to the ground floor of the main building.
The East entrance provides step-free access on a slope with a slight gradient to the ground floor of the east side of the building and east-side lift.
The Oxford Street entrance provides step-free sloped access to the ground floor of the main building. - There are automatic doors at the Central and West Entrance.
There is a push pad activated automatic door at the University Counselling Service entrance.
There are key code released manual doors at the Clifford Street entrance.
There are manual doors at the East and Oxford Road entrances.
Getting Around
- The ground floor is separated into three distinct areas with separate external entrances.
The ground floor and lecture theatres may be accessed from the Central and West, Clifford Street or Oxford Road entrances.
The University Counselling Service may be accessed from its own separate entrance at the Central and West entrance, or via Stairwell 4 from the Clifford Street or Oxford Road entrances.
The East entrance provides access to the ground floor of the Greater Manchester (GM) Universities Student Mental Health Service and the east-side lift. - Stairwell 5 only provides access to the ground floor of the main building, and the mezzanine and first floors of the Collection Care Lab.
There is only stepped access to the Collection Care Lab on the mezzanine floor via Stairwell 5. - The first floor upwards is arranged along a main access corridor on each floor linking the lifts at either end of the building.
A key card or key pad code is generally required to access the adjoining corridors out of the lift lobbies. - There is a slope with a slight gradient to overcome a level change in the Data Science MSc Collab Room 1 on the first floor.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- There is seating available on the ground and first floors.
There is very limited seating in other general circulation areas of the building. - Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided on the ground floor.
Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building from the mezzanine level and first floor upwards. - There are some push button release manual doors from the mezzanine level upwards.
Toilet and Changing Facilities
- There are 4 toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on the ground floor of the main part of the building, on the first and fifth floors of the Central and West area of the building.
- All toilets with adaptations have a left hand transfer space.
- Ambulant toilet facilities are located on all floors from the third floor upwards off the lift lobby near Stairwell 2 (Central and West Entrance).
- The male and female toilet facilities are located on all floors off the lift lobby near Stairwell 2 (Central and West Entrance) , and off the lift lobby near Stairwell 3 (East Entrance).
- The gender neutral toilet facilities are located as designated shared with the toilet with adaptations on the fifth floor of the Central and West area of the building.
- Standard shower facilities are located on the first floor to the rear of the School of Social Sciences (SoSS) Academic Advisors rooms.
- There are two standard showers available at this location.
There are 36cm high step overs onto the standard shower trays.

Entrance (Clifford Street)
- This entrance is located to the rear of the building opposite Prospect House, near the Blue Badge parking bays.
- The entrance area is not clearly signed.
- There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a key pad at a height of 140cm.
- There are double manual doors at this entrance.
- The doors open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 147cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low visual contrast.
- There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 110cm.
Access To (Central and West Entrance)
- The Central and West Entrance is located off Booth Street East, near the junction with Oxford Road.
- The most accessible route has slight ramps or slopes and uneven surfaces.
- The ramp has a slight gradient.
- The ramp is over 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
- This access point provides access to the main Central and West entrance and the University Counselling Service Entrance.
Entrance (Central and West Entrance)
- This entrance is located straight ahead after the Booth Street East access point.
- The entrance area is clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
- There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
- The doors open by sliding.
- There is a push pad at a height of 133cm.
- The width of the opening is 103cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low visual contrast.
- There is a second set of double automatic doors .
- The second set of doors are permanently held open.
- The width of the opening is 119cm.

Lift (Lift 1)
- The lift surveyed is located straight ahead after the Central and West entrance, on the right.
- The distance from the Central and West entrance is 21m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
- The ground floor and the first floor are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a low visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have a low visual contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 80cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 105cm (width) x 138cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
- All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a visual floor indicator.
- The button 0 is for the ground floor, and the button 2 is for the first floor.
This lift can be used to overcome Stairwell 5.
There are also lifts at the University Counselling Service and East entrances.
Stairs (Stairwell 4)
- The stairs surveyed are located on the left after the Central and West entrance.
- The ground floor, mezzanine floor and first floor can be accessed by these stairs.
- The steps have faded markings and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 18cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- The steps have open risers.
- There are 17 steps between the ground floor and the mezzanine floor.
There are 18 steps between the mezzanine floor and the first floor.
Stairwell 4 continues from the first floor upwards to the mid-left of the building via the first floor lobby area and corridor.
Stairs (Stairwell 5)
- The stairs surveyed are located straight ahead after the Central and West entrance, on the right.
- The ground, mezzanine and first floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 18 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.

Stairs (Lecture Theatres)
- The stairs surveyed are located left from the Central and West entrance, along the corridor.
