- Simon Building is a large building with nine floors.
- There are two standard lifts, one platform lift and three stairwells within the building.
- The floors are signed as Sub-Basement, Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Getting Inside
- The approach to Simon Building from Brunswick Park is step-free with a very slight slope which overcomes four to five steps.
- The building has two entrances, both of which provide step-free level access to the ground floor.
It can also be accessed via Café Benugo which has its own entrance. - The two entrances are signed as Main Entrance and Entrance.
Getting Around
- There is step-free access throughout the building on all floors.
Only Lift 1 goes to the fifth and sixth floors.
There is step-free level circulation between the two standard lifts on all other floors. - Access to the small Sub-Basement floor (the front of Lecture Theatre E) is via an enclosed platform lift or stairs.
- Room 6.004 PC Cluster on the sixth floor is accessed via a slight ramp or a single step.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
- There are some manual doors to access stairwells and corridors.
Toilet and Changing Facilities
- There are 5 toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on the basement, ground, fourth, fifth and sixth floors.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- Ambulant toilet facilities are located in the male and female toilets on the first and second floors.
- The male and female toilet facilities are located on the basement, first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth floors.
- The gender neutral toilet facilities are located on the ground floor.
- The shower facilities which have adaptations are located in the Universal toilets on the ground floor.
- The ambulant toilet cubicles only have rails to one side of the toilet seat. This varies between left and right.
There were some toilet facilities on the third and fourth floors which were being refurbished at the time of the survey.
Rooms and Services in the Building
Access To (Entrances from Brunswick Park)
- The two entrances into Simon Building are situated on a raised platform facing Brunswick Park.
Access to this platform is either via a long ramp with a very easy gradient, or one of two sets of steps. - The most accessible route has a very easy ramp or slope.
- There are 5 steps with handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The step markings are not clearly visible.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm .
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- The steps have tactile paving at the top and bottom.
There is an additional set of steps to the right of the ones immediately outside the Alternative Entrance.
These steps provide access to the same area.
Entrance (Main)
- This entrance is located off Brunswick Park, at the front of the building.
- The entrance area is clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
- The doors open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 144cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low colour contrast.
- There is a second set of double automatic doors .
- The second set of doors opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 144cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The second set of doors has a low colour contrast.
- The Main Entrance provides access to the ground floor, close to Café Benugo, the Universal Toilets and Lift 2.
Entrance (Alternative)
- This entrance is located off Brunswick Park, to the left of the main entrance.
- The entrance area is clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
- The doors open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 118cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low colour contrast.
- There is a second set of double automatic doors .
- The second set of doors opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 137cm.
- The second set of doors have a high colour contrast.
- This entrance gives access to Lift 1 on the ground floor.
Reception (Alternative Entrance)
- The reception is located next to Lift 1, just beyond the alternative entrance.
- The distance from the alternative entrance is 6m.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 104cm.
- There is a lowered section at the desk.
- The height of the lowered section is 75cm.
- The reception has glazed screens which may affect the ability of someone to lip read.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- Some flooring is shiny.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- The reception was not staffed at the time of the survey.
Lift (1)
- The lift surveyed is located to the left as you enter.
- The distance from the alternative entrance is 5m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
- The Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 floors are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high colour contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have Braille markings and a low colour contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 90cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 165cm (width) x 100cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a low colour contrast.
- The majority of the internal controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a visual floor indicator, an audible announcer and a list of floor services/facilities.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- It was not possible to access the right hand lift at the time of the survey (it was not working).
Lift (2)
- The lift surveyed is located in a corridor, to the left as you enter.
- The distance from the Main Entrance is 15m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and automatic doors.
- The Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3 and 4 floors are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high colour contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high colour contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 90cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 134cm (width) x 148cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings.
- All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a hearing assistance alarm system, a visual floor indicator and a list of floor services/facilities.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- There are other lifts available at this location which are of a similar size.
Lift (Platform - Sub Basement)
- The lift surveyed is located in a stairwell on the Basement floor.
- This lift is a platform lift.
- The distance from Lift 2 is 20m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access, a lift and automatic doors.
- The Basement and the Sub-Basement floors are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a low colour contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high colour contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 92cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 110cm (width) x 140cm (depth).
- The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high colour contrast.
- All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift is slow moving and the button needs to be pressed constantly when in use.
- Internally the lift has: a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- For the lift controls, audible announcer, and visual indicator Basement is 0 and Sub-Basement is -1.
Stairs (Lift 1 Lobby)
- The stairs surveyed are located off the Lift 1 lobby area.
- The Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps have faded markings and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are not easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the step is between 15cm and 18cm .
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- There are 2 other stairwells but only this one accesses the fifth and sixth floors.
