Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include The Hicks Room, the Meade Room, the Cormack Room, The Gates Scholars’ Common Room and the Ryle Room.
  • The Gates Scholars’ Common Room is used for quiet study and student events relating to the Cambridge Gates Scholars’.
    This room has automatic programmable card access. Access is limited to permitted staff and students.
    There is also an automatic dividing door separating two areas within, which is operated by a push button.

Useful Information

Building Parking (Closed Due to Construction Work)

  • The building does have its own dedicated parking.
  • Building Car Park View
    • The car park can be used by staff and visitors.
    • There are no parking charges that apply on the day.
    • The car park is located off Granta Place, to the side of the building.

    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 149cm (4ft 11in).
    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of less than 2cm.
  • Comments View
    • There is also a set of doors at this entrance that lead straight off Granta Place (shown in photograph 4). These are double automatic doors that open inwards, 123cm wide.

Reception (Main Reception)

  • The main reception is located just inside the main entrance.
  • The desk is 8m (8yd 2ft) from the main entrance.
  • Clear signage for the reception area is visible from the entrance.
  • There is step free access to this reception area.
  • The lighting levels in the reception area are moderate to good.
  • The reception desk/counter is medium height (77cm - 109cm).
  • There is not a low section of the counter (76cm or below) available.
  • The desk is staffed.
  • There is a hearing assistance system.
  • The type of system is a portable loop.

  • Comments View
    • There is a waiting area for this reception, accessed by 5 medium steps with handrails both sides (as shown in photograph 2). The waiting area contains seats with armrests, a sofa and coffee tables (photographs 3 and 4).
    • There is a telephone on the desk to contact the Duty Manager out of hours.

Getting Around

  • Access View
    • There is step free access throughout the building.
    • There is a steep ramp, with handrails on both sides, for access to the Hodgkin Room and ground floor toilets from the main entrance.
    • This ramp is shown in photographs 1 and 2. It is located next to the reception desk on the ground floor.

  • Getting Around View
    • There is clear signage for building facilities/areas in the foyer/reception area.

Location of Toilet/Changing Facilities

  • Accessible toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, at the top of the ramp leading from reception; the first floor, opposite the Riverside Restaurant; and on the third floor, at the far end of the corridor past the Grad's Cafe.
  • Female standard toilet facilities are located on the landing between the first and second floors..
  • Male standard toilet facilities are located on the landing between the second and third floors - this contains a baby change table 92 cm high.
  • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the female toilets located on the stairwell between floors 1 and 2, within the male standard toilets on the main stairwell between floors two and three. There are also baby changes in the accessible toilet cubicles on the ground floor and the third floor.
