Access Guide
Introduction
- This route plan covers the journey from the Main Gate on University Avenue to the Wolfson Link Building on Dumbarton Way.
The journey is approximately 360m (0.2 mile).
For those without mobility difficulties it may take about 4 minutes to cover.
From University Avenue to the Bower Building there is a long downhill slope.
This section may be challenging to those with mobility difficulties, including the return journey.
This routes also incorporates access to the Bower, Kelvin, Joseph Black, Graham Kerr and Davidson Buildings.
Exit the Main Gate and Turn Left
- Exit the right main gate and turn left onto University Avenue.
- If exiting from the gate on the left as you face the main gate (from University Avenue - photograph 1), cross the quiet entrance road towards the right gate.
- The main gate entrance road is level to the kerbs without tactile paving on either side.
- There is a paved surface with some tactile paving near the pedestrian crossing over the busy main road.
Continue 140m Down University Avenue
- Head down University Avenue past the traffic lights on the right with the main campus fence all the way on the left.
- There is some tactile paving at the top for the pedestrian crossing, then a moderate slope down the slightly narrower tarmac pavement.
- The pavement curves slightly round to the left and has an easy camber.
- There were some temporary roadworks near the Bower Building in September 2019, using it's car park as the route bypasses some of this.
Access the Bower Building
- After the main campus grounds on the left end is the Bower Building gates.
- Turn left into the Bower Building car park, which has block paving surface throughout.
- There is an easy slope following the University Avenue hill downwards.
- There is an easy slope following the University Avenue hill downwards.
- The accessible entrance to the Bower Building is to the left of the building.

Follow the Bower Building Car Park onto Science Way
- Use the route round to the right of the Bower Building onto Science Way.
- From the right of the Bower Building continue ahead towards the large light building which is the Kelvin Building.
- The block paving surface changes to a tarmac road near the rear of the Bower Building.
- There is a bollard to the left on a paved area near the Bower Building West Door entrance.
Continue Along Science Way
- Continue along the road between the Kelvin Building and the Estates Office to the right.
- There is an easy slope leading down Science Way.
- Pedestrians have the right of way on roads around the campus.
Access to the Kelvin Building
- There is stepped entry at the corner of the Kelvin Building on the left.
- For the accessible entrance follow Science Way further along until the tunnel access to the building.
- Use the yellow hatched marking to the left of the archway to the accessible entrance.

Continue Along Science Way Towards Dumbarton Way
- Continue along Science Way past the Kelvin Building to the left and the Joseph Black Buildings to the right.
- There is a pavement in front of the Joseph Black Building which has dropped kerbs without tactile paving.
- Beyond the Joseph Black Building the drooped kerb leads down to a marked pedestrian path on the road starting at the junction before the Graham Kerr Building.
Access to the Joseph Black Building
- The Joseph Black Building is to the right in the centre of Science Way.
- There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving near the ramp and steps to the main entrance.
- There are further entrances to the rear buildings along the link road out towards University Avenue on the right.
- The main entrance provides access to the rear buildings via internal links.

Access to the Graham Kerr Building
- The Graham Kerr Building is located to the right on Science Way beyond the Kelvin Building and Joseph Black Buildings.
- There is an easy slope leading towards the main entrance.

Cross Left onto the Dumbarton Way Slope
- Follow the pedestrian path diagonally across Science Way towards the sandstone Wolfson Link Building at the end of the road.
- There is an easy upwards slope along Science Way in front of the Graham Kerr Building to the right.
- Use the ramp on the left leading up towards the Wolfson Link Building.
- There is a dropped kerb without tactile paving onto the ramp which offers a central handrail.
Access to the Wolfson Link Building
- At the top of the ramp cross Dumbarton Way towards the entrance of the Wolfson Link Building.
- There is a moderate slope leading down Dumbarton Road from left to right.
- There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on both sides.
- The Wolfson Link Building provides access to the Davidson Building and to the West Medical Building.
- You have arrived.

Access to the Sir James Black Building
- For the Sir James Black Building main entrance do not use the ramp from Science Way to the left up to the Wolfson Link Building.
- Instead, continue up to the end of Science Way and cross the other side of Dumbarton Way where there is a dropped kerb without tactile paving.
- Turn right and follow the pavement down Dumbarton Way.
- There is a paved surface over a moderate slope downhill and some bollards near the kerb.
- The pavement ends at the steps down to the main entrance.
- There is a dropped kerb without tactile paving leading onto the road.
- Continue down the Dumbarton Way road which has a tarmac surface until the ramped access to the entrance.
- There are bollards at the slope back down towards the entrance and a dropped kerb without tactile paving.
