  • This route plan covers the journey from the Main Gate on University Avenue to the Stevenson Building on Oakfield Avenue. The journey is approximately 280m (920 feet). For those without mobility difficulties it may take about 3-4 minutes to cover. From the Main Gate to the Crossing for Oakfield Avenue there is a 180m long moderate downhill slope down University Avenue. This section may be challenging to those with mobility difficulties, including the return journey. This routes also incorporates access to the Rankine Building.

Exit the Main Gate

  • Exit the left main gate (as viewed from University Avenue - photograph 1) and turn right onto University Avenue.
  • If exiting from the gate on the right as you face the main gate, cross the pedestrianised entrance road towards the left gate.
  • The main gate entrance road is level to the kerbs without tactile paving on either side.
  • The wide pavements in this area have a paved surface.

Turn Right onto University Avenue

  • Continue down University Avenue towards the front gates.
  • There is some tactile paving for the traffic lights on the left which extends across the whole pavement.
  • There is an easy slope throughout.

Cross the Access-Only University Gate Junction

  • Cross the road entrance to the closed university gates which should not be used by traffic.
  • If these gates happen to be open please take more care when crossing.
  • There are pedestrian gates to the campus on either side.
  • The pedestrian gate on the right offers step free access.
  • There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on both sides.
  • Continue on down University Avenue.

Continue Down University Avenue

  • Keep going down the hill in front of the University until the pedestrian crossing to the opposite side.
  • The slope is easy to moderate towards the bottom.

Cross University Avenue

  • Cross University Avenue using the pedestrian crossing.
  • There are rotating cones beneath all controls here to assist visually impaired people.
  • There are lowered kerbs with tactile markings on both sides.
  • There is a moderate slope running down University Avenue from left to right as you cross.

Turn Left up Towards Oakfield Avenue

  • Turn left when across the road and continue briefly back uphill towards Oakfield Avenue.
  • There is a moderate slope over a concrete surface with some uneven parts in places.

Turn Right into Oakfield Avenue

  • Follow the pavement round to the right onto Oakfield Avenue.
  • There is a moderate slope which becomes easier as you continue along.
  • The Stevenson Building is signed on the fence here.

Continue Along Oakfield Avenue

  • Keep going beside the large concrete building on the right which is the Rankine Building.
  • The easy slope levels out towards its entrance at the far end of the building.

Access to the Rankine Building

  • Continue until the car park entrance to the Rankine Building with the barrier control.
  • Use the ramp round the barrier for step free entry, or the steps are just prior to this at the front of the building.
  • Link to Rankine Building.

Cross the Rankine Building Car Park Road

  • Cross the narrow car park access road to the Rankine Building towards the light sandstone and glass Stevenson Building.
  • There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on both sides.
  • There is a block paving surface on the other side.

Access to the Stevenson Building

  • The stepped entrance to the Stevenson Building is just beyond the crossing.
  • Continue past this and use the ramp down to the accessible entrance where there is also a dropped kerb to the road.
  • You have arrived.
