Getting Here (Getting to Rutherford College)

  • By Road View
    • The building is on the south-east side of the campus in the pedestrianised area.
      The building has its main entrance facing the central campus.
      This is about 1 mile north of Canterbury City Centre.
      The building can be reached via Darwin Road which leads off Giles Lane.
      Giles Lane connects with the A290 Whitstable Road.
    • There is step-free access from Rutherford car park into the building.
      The Rutherford car park is for Blue Badge holders and university Pink permit holders only.
      The nearest car park for other users is the Central Visitor Car Park, to the west of the Gulbenkian/Colyer-Fergusson Buildings.
      This is reached using Library Road which leads off Giles Lane.
  • By Bus View
    • There are frequent Unibus services linking the University campus with the centre of Canterbury and Canterbury East and West train stations.
      The nearest bus stops are on Darwin Road.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest train station is Canterbury West, to the north of the city centre.
      This is on the line from London to Kent, including Ashford International.

    • The stairs detailed above are shown in photographs 1 and 2. They lead off the North Wing into the West Wing on level 3 and 4.
    • Photograph 3 and 4 show the stairs leading down (in 2 sections) from the North Wing courtyard into the Dining Hall on floor 2. The stairs down to the dining hall are similar to the others but are just longer and are clearly marked.
    • Photographs 5 and 6 show the accessible route/corridor from the main entrance that bypasses the foyer steps/ North wing level changes and platform lift. It gives step-free access to Level 3 and around the wings, with the corridor easily passed through due to push-pad (100cm high) operated automatic doors. Lift 30 is used for access to other floors in the south/east/west wings. The route is well signed throughout the building.

Other Floors (Stairs VIII)

    • The stairs are located in north-west corner of the West wing. There are various others in the corners of the wings (North, East, West, South).

The staircases have non-slip strips around 2cm from the edge of the steps and so could be misleading for someone with a visual impairment. There is a refuge point with an intercom placed at a convenient height by the staircase between the south and east wing as shown in photographs 7 and 8.

Accessible Toilet(s) (Floor 2 - West Wing - Right Hand Transfer)
