Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include 10 lecture theatres and one TV studio.
  • Step free access to building is via the second floor entrance or the Learning Centre entrance (through the centre and down a steep ramp). The Senate House Entrance is accessed via steps and a ramp from the patio outside the Hive (Senate House lift can be used to get to the second floor and then to this ramp with no steps used). There is signage within the building showing the way for step-free access through the Lecture Theatre to the Hive (bypasses the steps outside).

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • Guildford is 30 miles South West of London and can be accessed from the A3. If approaching from London or the M25 (Junction 10), the University exit is signed from the A3 bypass.
      If accessing from the A322 or A323 from Bagshot or Aldershot, at the A3 roundabout take the exit signed to Portsmouth, and then turn off the A3 at the first exit (signed to the Cathedral and University).
      If entering Guildford from Horsham (A281) or Godalming (A3100), leave the central gyratory system at the exit signed for Farnham (A31).
      After approximately 200 yards, at the mini-roundabout, take the first turning right into Guildford Park Road, and continue along Madrid Road and The Chase for a mile. At the next roundabout, take the third exit for the University entrance.
    • Parking is very limited on site. There is a pay and display car park, other car parks operate a permit system.
      Vehicles displaying a Blue Badge may park free in the car parks and in Blue Badge bays for up to 6 hours, unless the University host or driver has made arrangements with the Security Office for a longer stay.
  • By Bus View
    • On site bus stops are available and ARRIVA buses operate a regular service to the campus from the train station. Services 3, 17, 27 and 37 run approximately every ten minutes during the day.
  • By Train View
    • Guildford Station is approximately 1.2 miles from the University. It is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Half-hourly train services run from Guildford to Waterloo, with a journey time of around half-an-hours.
      To get to the University from the station, exit by footbridge and the rear (western) exit. Turn right from the station along Guildford Park Road and take the second turning on the right (just past the Evangelical Church). Follow the path through the council car park to the campus.

    • This entrance is accessed only via stairs from elsewhere in the campus. It only accesses Lecture Theatre A (photographs 1-3).
    • There is another stepped entrance into the building round the corner from this one.
    • It is opposite the Hive and accesses the Senate House side stairwell and rear entrance of Theatre A. It is signed as the International Study Centre as the staircase leads up towards it (bridge from the stairwell to its location on top of the Hive). This is shown in photographs 4-6.
    • The step is in front of the door and is 12cm high. The doors are double, manual, heavy, open outwards, has a slight lip and are 136cm wide.

    • On the ground floor there are various booths. The tables are 72cm high and benches 49cm high. There are other similar benches and tables on the opposite side of that room. There is also a study area located on level 3 (Photographs 7 & 8).
    • There is a stepped entrance towards the International Study Centre via the flight of stairs by Theatre A & B (Photographs 9-11).
    • The various theatres and TV Studio C are well signed (Photographs 12 & 13).
    • Photographs 14-16 show the signage to the Hive from the Theatre.

TV Studio C

  • TV Studio C is used by GSA as a TV Studio, teaching and screening room. It's located on level 1 by the Learning Centre side entrance. It has level access and does not contain any fixed furniture.
  • The room is accessed via two manual, heavy doors that are over 75cm wide.

Lecture Theatre(s) (B and A)

  • Directional and locational signage for the lecture theatre(s) is available in upper and lower case lettering that is clearly visible.
  • The corridor outside the lecture theatre(s) is sufficiently wide enough (150cm+) to allow wheelchair users to pass.
  • There is step free access into the lecture theatre(s).

Theatre A is almost identical to Theatre B. However, Lecture Theatre A can only be accessed via steps to the rear of the room or via the stepped Thomas Telford/ Frank Whittle side entrance.

Lecture Theatre(s) (E and L)

  • Directional and locational signage for the lecture theatre(s) is available in upper and lower case lettering that is clearly visible.
  • The corridor outside the lecture theatre(s) is sufficiently wide enough (150cm+) to allow wheelchair users to pass.

  • Photographs 1-7 show Theatre H and Photographs 8-13 show Theatre J. Theatre H has connecting double doors into Griffiths (G) Theatre (Photograph 6). Theatre H also has a fire exit out onto the path outside with level access but a slight lip. This could be used in emergencies as the second floor accessible entrance into the building is around the corner from the room (Photograph 7).

Other Floors (Senate House Side Stairs)

  • Steps View
    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1 and 2.
    • The stairs are located to the side of the building.
    • The stairs are approximately 24m from the Senate House Side Entrance.
    • There are 12 steps between floors.
    • There are manual, double doors which may be difficult to open to access the stairwell on the ground floor, on the first floor and on the second floor.
    • The lighting levels are moderate to good.
    • The steps are clearly marked.
    • The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The steps have a handrail on both sides.
    • There is a landing.
  • Comments View
    • The stairs have tactile paving at the top and the bottom (Photograph 1).
    • There is the door leading into the building from the Hive (stepped entrance) at the bottom and the door towards the International Study Centre is on the floor above.

Other Floors (Learning Centre Side Stairs)
