Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • The St Mary's Campus is located off St Mary's Road (B455), which can be accessed off the M4/A4, and also the North Circular, via the Uxbridge Road (A4020).
    • Car parking spaces for visitors with Blue Badges can be made available in The Park Car Park, if requested in advance, and there is also a Blue Badge bay located outside Pillars Restaurant. Otherwise use a nearby public car park, such as Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre.
  • By Bus View
    • Bus route 65 has stops on St Mary's Road close to the campus. The University also operates a free shuttle bus between Ealing Broadway Station, the St Mary's Road campus, South Ealing Station, and on to the Student Village and the Brentford site.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest railway station is Ealing Broadway, which is on the London Paddington to Reading line.
  • By Underground View
    • The nearest tube station is South Ealing, on the Piccadilly Line. Ealing Broadway station is also served by the Central and District lines.

Parking 2022

  • Only students who have a Blue Badge can park on site during peak times. This policy is only in place until 31st July 2022.

Reception

  • Library Reception is located to the left as you enter the Heart Building from The Park entrance.
  • The desk is 20m (21yd 2ft) from the The Park entrance.
  • The reception area is clearly visible from the entrance.
  • There is step free access to this reception area.
  • The lighting levels in the reception area are bright.
  • The reception desk/counter is high (110cm+).
  • There is a low section of the counter (76cm or below) available.
  • There is a clear knee recess beneath the low counter.
  • The desk is staffed.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.

Entrance (Library Entrance)

  • Steps View
    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G-1-2-3-4.
    • There are 15+ steps between floors.
    • There are manual, heavy, double doors to access the stairwell on all floors.
    • The lighting levels are bright.
    • The steps are medium (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The steps have a handrail on both sides.
    • There is a landing.

Lift (Library)

  • The lift is located in the library stairwell.

Getting Around

  • Access View
    • There is an easy slope, with no handrails, for access to the front of the first floor from the library lift and stairs.
    • The ramp is located immediately to the left as you exit the library lift and stairs (as seen in photograph 1). There is an identical ramp on the second and third floors (photograph 3). There are also easy ramps on the other side of the library lift and stairs on floors 2, 3 and 4 (photograph 4).
    • There is/are 3 clearly marked step(s), with handrails on both sides, for access to the rear of the library on the second floor, including library meeting rooms 1 and 2 (photograph 5) .
    • The step(s) is/are medium (11cm - 17cm).
    • There is a platform lift which overcomes the steps.
    • There are two sets of steps leading to this area - one by the library lift and stairs, and one at the front of the library, which has four deep steps (photograph 6). The platform lift is located by the stairs at the front.
    • There is/are 7 clearly marked step(s), with handrails on both sides, for access to the rear of the third floor, via the Peter John lift, stairs and toilets (photograph 7).
    • The step(s) is/are deep (18cm+).

    • There are book return machines in the reception area. There are book return and renewal machines located in the foyer, just inside the library entrance.
    • These are mostly accessible, however part of the touch screen is over 120cm in height (shown in photograph 8).
    • There are similar machines located on all other floors (photograph 9).
    • There are two book return machines in the rear of the foyer, 92cm in height (photograph 10).
    • There are also library catalogue terminals located in this area on a high desk (photograph 11).

  • The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.

    • This lift gives access from the front part of the library to the Peter John Building toilets, stairs and lift.
    • The rear of the library can be accessed by an easy ramp, identical to that on the first floor.

  • Equipment available for people with a visual impairment includes a document magnifier on first floor (photograph 4).

    • There is a room on the first floor containing the auxiliary aids and assistive software (photograph 4).
    • The assistive software available is Jaws, Dolphin and Supernova.
    • There are also cubicles on the second and third floor containing computers with assistive software and large text keyboards.
    • There are Information Points located throughout the library (photograph 5) which contain terminals on a medium height desk.
    • These are not staffed, however there are staff located throughout the library who are able to offer assistance.
    • There are personal lockers and laptop charging lockers located throughout the library (photograph 6).

  • Directional and locational signage for the room(s) is available in upper and lower case lettering that is clearly visible.
  • The corridor outside the room(s) is sufficiently wide enough (150cm+) to allow wheelchair users to pass.

  • The door opening width(s) is/are 75cm+ for the room(s).
  • The door(s) for the room(s) is/are not push pad activated.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system for the room(s).
  • There is not a visual fire alarm beacon in the room(s).

Fourth Floor

  • The Graduate School and the Academic Quality Office are located on the fourth floor.
  • Access to these from the library lift and stairs requires swipe card access (only granted to staff and PHD students).
  • Visitors can use the telephone next to the locked doors to gain access.
