Access Guide

Show Easy Read

Introduction

  • Disability and Neurodiversity offers confidential support for disabled or dyslexic students. It is made up of an open area as well as a Reception and Office area.
    Consultation rooms are to be constructed to form part of additional services however, these were not constructed at time of survey.
  • Disability and Neurodiversity is located in the Mullens Area on the first floor of the library.
    Access to the Library is via the Learning Centre. Please see the separate guides for the Learning Centre and Library for more details on accessing Disability and Neurodiversity.

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • Guildford is 30 miles South West of London and can be accessed from the A3. If approaching from London or the M25 (Junction 10), the University exit is signed from the A3 bypass.
      If accessing from the A322 or A323 from Bagshot or Aldershot, at the A3 roundabout take the exit signed to Portsmouth, and then turn off the A3 at the first exit (signed to the Cathedral and University).
      If entering Guildford from Horsham (A281) or Godalming (A3100), leave the central gyratory system at the exit signed for Farnham (A31).
      After approximately 200 yards, at the mini-roundabout, take the first turning right into Guildford Park Road, and continue along Madrid Road and The Chase for a mile. At the next roundabout, take the third exit for the University entrance.
    • Parking is very limited on site. There is a pay and display car park, other car parks operate a permit system.
      Vehicles displaying a Blue Badge may park free in the car parks and in Blue Badge bays for up to 6 hours, unless the University host or driver has made arrangements with the Security Office for a longer stay.
  • By Bus View
    • On site bus stops are available and ARRIVA buses operate a regular service to the campus from the train station. Services 3, 17, 27 and 37 run approximately every ten minutes during the day.
  • By Train View
    • Guildford Station is approximately 1.2 miles from the University. It is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Half-hourly train services run from Guildford to Waterloo, with a journey time of around half-an-hours.
      To get to the University from the station, exit by footbridge and the rear (western) exit. Turn right from the station along Guildford Park Road and take the second turning on the right (just past the Evangelical Church). Follow the path through the council car park to the campus.

Building Parking (Learning Centre (Block LLC))

  • The building does have its own dedicated parking.
  • Building Car Park View
    • The car park can be used by Blue Badge holders.
    • There are no parking charges that apply on the day.
    • The car park is located between the library building and Battersea Court.
    • The car park type is open air/surface.
    • The car park does not have a height restriction barrier.
    • Designated Blue Badge parking bays are available.
    • There is/are 3 designated parking bay(s) within the car park.
    • The Blue Badge bay(s) is/are clearly marked.
    • The dimensions of the designated parking bay(s) are 360cm x 520cm (11ft 10in x 17ft 1in).
    • The dimensions of the designated bays do vary in size.
    • Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders do not need to be booked in advance.
    • The nearest designated bay is 40m (43yd 2ft) from the main entrance.
    • The route from the car park to the building is accessible to a wheelchair user with assistance.
    • Assistance may be required because there is / are slopes/ramps.

  • Drop Off Point View

  • Second Set of Doors View

    • The door(s) open(s) automatically.
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The width of the door opening is 152cm (4ft 12in).
    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.
  • Ramp/Slope View
    • There is a ramp/slope at this entrance.
    • The ramp/slope is located on the path leading to the entrance.
    • The ramp/slope gradient is slight.
  • Comments View
    • This entrance is closed between 23:00 - 07:00.

Lift

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located between the main entrance and 24 hour entrance.
  • The lift is a standard lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1 and 3.
  • Wall mounted information boards are provided at lift landings.
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1275kg.
  • The lift is approximately 13m (14yd 8in) from the main entrance.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 110cm (3ft 7in).
  • The dimensions of the lift are 200cm x 143cm (6ft 7in x 4ft 8in).

Entrance (Library Entrance)

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located on the first floor.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
    • The door(s) is / are single.
    • The width of the door opening is 100cm (3ft 3in).
  • Comments View
    • The gate can only be opened by the Library staff. There are narrower barriers at this entrance which are 53cm wide. Access is via a university card.

Level Changes

  • There are four separate slopes to access the various Additional Services Areas.
  • There is a slight ramp leading to 14LB01 and 15LB01. This has handrails with a width of 136cm. It can be seen in photograph 1.
  • There are three slopes to the main area of Additional Services.
  • One has a slight slope with a handrail to the left with a width of 140cm. This can be seen in photograph 2.
  • There is a steep slope with a width of 100cm and a handrail on the right. This can be seen in photograph 3.
  • There is a slight slope with a handrails on both sides with a width of 134cm and can be seen in photograph 4.
  • There is also a single deep step to access the additional services area. This can be seen in photograph 5.

Inside Access

  • There is level access to the service.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • This venue does not play background music.
  • The lighting levels are good.
  • Comments View
    • This section describes the area is in front of the Additional Service offices. As such there is no need to pass through entrance doors to access it.

Entrance (Reception and Office Area)

    • This information is for the entrance located in the Mullens area of the first floor.
    • There is ramped/sloped or stepped access at this entrance.

    • The door(s) may be difficult to open.

    • There is a separate entrance into the office next to the one described above it can be seen in photograph 2.
    • Both doors are made of clear glass and are part of a wall also made of clear glass meaning that they have therefore have poor visibility and are not easily distinguishable from the wall.

Reception

  • The Additional Learning Support Reception is located just inside the Reception and Office entrance.
  • The desk is 2m (2yd 7in) from the Reception and Office entrance.
  • The reception area is clearly visible from the entrance.
  • There is step free access to this reception area.
  • The lighting levels in the reception area are good.
  • The reception desk/counter is low (76cm or lower).
  • There is a clear knee recess beneath the low/lowered counter.
  • The desk is staffed.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Comments View
    • The reception is located just inside the right entrance into the office area.

Accessible Toilet

  • There are accessible toilets available on the second floor of the Library, and on the ground floor by Archives and Special Collections.
  • There are also accessible toilets on the ground, first and third floors of the Learning Centre.

Standard Toilet(s)

  • There are standard male and female toilets with step free access on the first floor of the Library, and female toilets on the fourth floor. There are also toilets on the landings between floors on both staircases in the Library.
