Parking

  • By road there is easy access from the A13, A12 and A11.
  • By bus the services are 15, 115, D6 Night Bus, N15 and N551.
  • By train the nearest station is Limehouse.
  • By underground the nearest station is Canary Wharf.
  • By DLR the nearest station is All Saints.

East India Dock Road Overview

  • East India Dock Road is part of the A13, leading into the City of London.
  • This street guide covers East India Dock Road from Burdett Road Interchange to St Leonards Road Interchange.
  • The length of the route is approximately 1.29 km (0.8 miles).
  • Most pathways are 200cm wide and have a surface of paving slabs.
  • Dropped kerbs at the junctions have tactile markings and traffic light control pedestrian crossings, with buttons at a height suitable for wheelchair users.
  • The shopping area is located on the north side of the road between Kerbey Street and St Leonard's Road a distance of 441m (0.27 miles).
  • Between Kerbey Street and Chrisp Street is Chrisp Street Market.
  • The street guide is divided into three main sections;
  • 1. Kerbey Street to Chrisp Street.
  • 2. Chrisp Street to Ida Street.
  • 3. Ida Street to St Leonards Road.
  • There are pedestrian crossings with traffic lights on either side of the tactile dropped kerbs in the shopping area, some of which have central islands that also have tactile dropped kerbs.

South Side of The Road

  • This section details the south side of the road located opposite the shopping area of East India Dock Road.
  • Along the south side of the road is located All Saints DLR Station as shown in photograph 4, Poplar Baths and Leisure Centre, and the Poplar Mosque and Community Centre.
  • Along this area of the street the surface is predominantly block paving.
  • Outside the Poplar Baths and Leisure Centre there are several service roads as shown in photograph 2.
  • There are also dropped kerbs with tactile markings leading to service roads across East India Dock Road as shown in photograph 3.
  • There are obstacles such as sign posts and street lamps along parts of the path however these never reduce the width of the pathway to under 100cm, an example of which is shown in photograph 6.

Crossing Kerbey Street

  • As you reach the shopping area of East India Dock Road there is a brick block paved road.
  • Either side of the road there is block paving.
  • There is dropped kerbs with tactile markings on both sides of the road.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights on either side of the road.

Section 1. Kerbey Street / Chrisp Street

  • The distance from Kerbey Street to Chrisp Street is approximately 140m.
  • The surface of the road is block paving.
  • Along the pathways there are obstacles such as signposts, bins and trees.
  • There is a slight uphill slope here.
  • Along the pathway there is a covered and seated bus stop for Chrisp Street Market.
  • The bus stop is only present on the Chrisp Street Market side of the road.
  • The bus stop serves routes 15, 115, D6, N15 and N551.
  • As you approach Chrisp Street there is a pedestrian crossing with dropped kerbs and tactile markings and a central island with rotating cones on the controls.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving.
  • This crossing provides the most direct route from All Saints DLR Station to this side of the street.

Crossing Chrisp Street

  • There is a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights and dropped kerbs with tactile markings on either side to cross Chrisp Street.
  • The traffic lights have rotating cones.
  • There is a central island in the middle of the road which has dropped kerbs and tactile markings.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving.

Section 2. Chrisp Street / Ida Street

  • The distance from Chrisp Street to Ida Street is approximately 140m.
  • On crossing Chrisp Street turn right and head along East India Dock Road.
  • There is a steep slope over a bridge at this point, followed by a slight slope downwards as shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving.
  • There is a slight slope leading down towards the road.
  • There are some obstacles along the path such as road signs as shown in photograph 5.
  • As you approach Ida Street there is a bus stop for Bazely Street, which serves routes 108, 115, N15 and N118 as shown in photograph 6.

Section 3. Ida Street / St Leonards Road

  • The distance from Ida Street / St Leonards Road is approximately 140m.
  • The pathway passes Ida Street which is located to your left as shown in photograph 1.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving.
  • Photograph 2 shows the section of East India Dock Road just beyond Ida Street.
  • There are obstacles along the pavement including lamp posts and portable shop signs as shown in photograph 3.
  • There is a slight slope towards the road.
  • There are two separate pedestrian crossings across East India Dock Road as shown in photographs 4 and 5.
  • There are traffic lights at these pedestrian crossings with rotating cones and central islands with dropped kerbs and tactile markings on each side.
  • There is a section of pavement consisting of both concrete and block paving as you approach St Leonards Road as shown in photograph 6.
  • Immediately following this section of pavement there is the Poplar Central Mosque.
  • The area just before reaching St Leonards Road can be seen in photographs 7 and 8.

St Leonards Road Junction

  • There are pedestrian crossings at this junction.
  • Traffic runs from four directions.
  • The crossings have traffic lights and there are dropped kerbs with tactile markings at the crossings.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is brick block and block paving.

Toilet Facilities

  • There are public toilets located in Chrisp Street Market.
  • There are also public toilets located in the Idea Store, located just off of East India Dock Road.
  • Some cafĂ© and restaurants have toilets facilities.
