View
- Ellen Wilkinson is a large sized building with three blocks. There are six floors in C Block, five floors in B Block and seven floors in A Block.
- There are three lifts and six main staircases within the building.
- The floors are signed as Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
This is slightly different inside the lifts where control buttons are marked as 0 instead of Ground. - There are link passages from A and B Block to C Block on levels Ground, 1 and 3.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the building is step-free via a slight ramp.
- Ellen Wilkinson has two entrances. Both entrances provide step-free slight ramp access to the ground floor and have automatic double doors.
- The main entrance is named and signed as Ellen Wilkinson Building Entrance A.
The C Block entrance is signed as Ellen Wilkinson Building. - Entrance A provides step-free slight ramped access to the Ground Floor in A Block and has two sets of double automatic doors.
- The C Block entrance provides step-free slight ramped access to the Ground Floor in C Block and has a set of double automatic doors.
- Access to A Block and B Block is only available on the Ground floor, level 1 and level 3 from C Block.
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
- There are link passages from A and B Block to C Block on levels Ground, 1 and 3.
- On level 2 there are four clearly marked steps, with no handrails leading to Lecture Theatres 2.6 and 2.7.
- There is one step on level 5 within C Block to access a seating area.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
- Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
- There are some manual doors in circulation corridors but they are permanently held open, only for access to stairwells.
Toilet and Changing Facilities
- There are 5 toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on C Block Ground, B Block Ground, A Block level 1, level 5 and level 6.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- Ambulant toilet facilities are located on C Block level 1, level 2, level 4 and A Block between level 1 and level 2.
- The male and female toilet facilities are located C Block Ground, level 1, level 2, level 3 and level 4, B Block Ground and A Block level 3.
- The male toilet facilities are located on A Block Ground, level 1 and level 4.
- The female toilet facilities are located on A Block on stairs between level 1 and 2, between level 2 and 3 and between level 3 and 4.
- The shower facilities which have adaptations are located within the toilet with adaptations in B Block on the Ground floor.
- Standard shower facilities are located on C Block level 3.
- There are seven steps to access the male standard toilets on level 4 in A Block.
There is an all gender toilet on the stairs between level 2 and 3 in A Block.

- On-street designated Blue Badge parking is available .

Entrance (Entrance A)
- This entrance is located at the West end of the building.

- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.

- The ramp has a slight gradient.
- The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
- The ramp bypasses the steps.
- There are 6 steps with a central handrail.
- The handrail is easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The steps are clearly marked.
- The steps have tactile markings at the top and bottom.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
- There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
- The doors open by sliding.
- The width of the opening is 109cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
- The doors have a low colour contrast.
- There is step-free level access as you enter.
Lift (A Block)
- The lift surveyed is located within A Block, to the right after entering the building.
- The distance from Entrance A is 6m.
- The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
- Ground floor, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a high colour contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
- The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high colour contrast.
- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The lift door opening width is 100cm.
- The internal dimensions of the lift are 200cm (width) x 130cm (depth).

- The handrail is not easy to grip.
