Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include Teaching Rooms, Design Studios and Laboratories.
    Lower Ground and Ground floors contain The Department of Design Teaching Rooms and Workshops.
    The left-hand side/East entrance leads to a large room used as a Design Studio.
    The Hexagon Room, Creative Computing, Mac Laboratory, Year 3 Studio, Office and Teaching Rooms are all located on the first floor.
    The first floor has two levels with the lower level accessible by lift and stairlift.
    The upper level has Staff Offices which are not accessible to wheelchair users.
    On the second floor there is a staff room (not accessible as half-way up the staircase between floors 1 and 2). LB 301-305, MA Studio (Nic Hughes) and LB 301-304 are also located on the second floor.
  • The building is located on the campus facing onto the College Green.
    There are various maps/signage which show the buildings on campus and the accessible route to them is clearly marked.
    The nearest map to the Lockwood Building is by the Whitehead Building at the other end of the College Green.

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • Goldsmiths is located in New Cross, South East London on Lewisham Road, five miles from central London.

      From Central London take the A2 towards Dover via the Old Kent Road.
      At the end of Old Kent Road (on the New Cross Gate one-way system) turn into New Cross Road.
      Keep in the right hand lane and shortly after Sainsbury's take the A20 fork to Lewisham.
      Turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way – Goldsmiths is on the left.

      From Kent, Surrey, Sussex, or north if using Blackwall Tunnel or Dartford River Crossing (southbound).
      Follow the A2 or A20 towards London (using M25 or South Circular road to join the nearest of these).
      On the A20, after passing through Lewisham, the Richard Hoggart Building is clearly visible on the left after about one mile.
      On the A2, follow the left turn after New Cross Station into Amersham Road, turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way – Goldsmiths is on the left downhill.
    • There is no public parking on the Goldsmiths campus.
      Parking is very limited on the Goldsmiths campus. There are a number of designated bays for Blue Badge holders reserved for current staff and students with mobility needs.
      There are 2 on-street Blue Badge bays on Dixon Road, to the right of the Richard Hoggart Building, approximately 40m from the main entrance gate.
      Visitors requiring parking should contact the college at least 48 hours in advance.
  • By Bus View
    • The following buses stop outside Goldsmiths: 21, 36, 53, 136, 171, 172, 177, 225, 321, 343, 436 and 453.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest over ground station is New Cross Rail Station and is approximately 5 minutes away.
      New Cross Gate rail station is also within travelling distance of Goldsmiths.
  • By Underground View
    • There is not an underground station within travelling distance of Goldsmiths.

Building Parking

  • The building does not have its own dedicated parking.
  • Building Car Park View
    • The car park can be used by staff, students and Blue Badge holders.
    • There are no parking charges that apply on the day.
    • The car park is located at the rear of the Richard Hoggart building.

    • Photograph 6 shows the 5 steps by the ramp.
    • Photograph 7 shows the slope up towards the 3 medium, unmarked steps with no handrails shown in photographs 8 and 9.
      They are in front of the main entrance leading from the pedestrian path running alongside the Green.

    • There is a door that links both sides of the building on the lower first floor by the lift. The door requires a key card (118cm high) to enter the lower-ground floor in the main section of the building from the East side.

Reception (Design Office)

  • Design Office is located to the right on entering the building.

  • Comments View
    • At the time of survey (January 2022) the office was closed. Signage on the door states that ID cards are collected from Security in the Richard Hoggart Building. If students have any issues they can email [email protected].

Other Floors

  • Steps View
    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1, 2.
    • The stairs are located directly ahead on entering the building.
    • The stairs are approximately 7m from the main entrance.
    • There are 15+ steps between floors.
    • The lighting levels are moderate to good.
    • The steps are not clearly marked.
    • The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps do have handrails.
    • The steps have a handrail on the left going up.
    • There is a landing.
    • The first 2 steps leading to the main staircase from the foyer are clearly marked and have a handrail on the right going up as shown in photograph 1.
      There is a manual, single door that is held permanently open before the rest of the stairs (photographs 2-6).
      There is signage for facilities at the bottom of the stairs/main entrance.
      There are stairs to the Year 2 Studio on the 1st floor via a manual door off the lower first floor as shown in photograph 7 and the lift does bypass them.
      There are further stairs on the lower first floor bypassed by a stairlift detailed in the level change section. There are 5 Staff Offices on the 1st floor which are not accessible to wheelchair users as there is no lift bypassing the 6 steps between levels (photograph 5).
      The LB307 staff room is halfway up the staircase between floors 1 and 2 and is not accessible to wheelchair users.
      The Nic Hughes Studio on level 2 is accessible via a lift in addition to stairs.
      There is a similar staircase within the left/East side of the building accessed via a single, manual door (photograph 8). The stairs are 18cm high and have a handrail on the left-hand side. This leads up to the female changing room and toilets by the lift on the lower first floor.
      At the top of the stairs there is a door linking the other side of the building (photograph 9).
      The key card reader is 118cm high.

Lift

  • There is a lift for public use.
  • The lift is located to the left-hand side/East Entrance.
  • The lift is a standard lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, L1, 1, 2.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
  • There are manual, double doors which may be difficult to open to access the lift lobby on the ground floor.
  • The weight limit for the lift is 630kg.
  • The lift is approximately 7m (7yd 1ft) from the left-hand side/East Entrance.
  • Staff do not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The clear door width is 79cm (2ft 7in).
  • The dimensions of the lift are 113cm x 133cm (3ft 8in x 4ft 4in).
  • There are separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • There is a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.

      The intercoms are 90cm high and have induction loops which are signed.

Lift (Platform Lower First Floor to First Floor)

    • There are standard showers within the changing room accessed via two 13cm steps which are clearly marked. The showers are currently not functional/ in use (January 2022).
    • There are toilets and sinks (84cm high) within the changing room.
    • The female changing room (first floor by the lift) is very similar with the showers having only one 14cm step. The showers are not functional/ in use but are shown in photographs 6 and 7.
