Getting Here

  • There is easy access from the A13, A1261 and A12.
  • The Poplar High Street Blackwall Stop S is serviced by 15, D6, D7, D8 and the N550 bus service.
  • The nearest DLR is Poplar.
  • The nearest overground is Limehouse Station.
  • The nearest Underground is Canning Town.

Parking

  • There is standard and Blue Badge on street parking available along Poplar High Street.
  • The Blue Badge parking bay is 160cm wide and 600cm long.
  • There is a charge for parking.
  • Patrons can pay by phone.

Poplar High Street Overview

  • Poplar High Street runs from Ming Street in the west, to Prestage Way in the east, a distance of approximately 1km (0.62 miles).
  • The main shopping area covered within the guide is located between Newby Place and Cotton Street a distance of 180m (0.11 miles).
  • Along most of the street the surface is block paving and has some slopes along it, some being steep.
  • Roads intersecting the street have dropped kerbs with tactile marking on either side.
  • There are zebra crossings and pedestrian crossings with traffic lights to cross from one side of the street to the other.
  • Along the road you will encounter Tower Hamlets College (photograph 5), Poplar Play Centre and the Coroners Court.
  • Poplar High street is divided up into 2 sections within this guide;
  • 1. Newby Place to Bazely Street.
  • 2. Bazely Street to Cotton Street.

Crossing Newby Place

  • The crossing for Newby Place is only present on the north side of Poplar High Street as shown in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
  • The crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile markings on either side.
  • The is a slight camber in the middle of the crossing.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving.
  • Traffic approaches the road from both directions.
  • On the south side of the street is a service road as shown in photograph 4.
  • This service road is located after a bridge meaning that there is a steep slope going downwards on the approach.

Section 1. Newby Place / Bazeby Street

  • This area on the north side of the road is block paved with a slight slope towards the road.
  • The road has the occasional manhole cover.
  • This area can be seen in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
  • As you approach Bazely Street there is the Poplar High Street Blackwall DLR bus stop which serves routes 15, D6, D7, D8 and N550.
  • This bus stop has no shelter or seating as shown in photograph 4.
  • Along the south side of the road there are two service roads.
  • One of which is shown in photographs 5.
  • There is a dropped kerb located in front of Docklands Lodge London which can be seen in photograph 6.
  • The width of the road is greatly reduced shortly after this to a width of approximately 150cm.
  • After there is a further service road as shown in photograph 7.
  • Along this section there is standard permit holder parking, pay by phone parking as well as designated Car Club bays.

Crossing Bazely Street

  • The crossing for Bazely Street is only present on the north side of Poplar High Street as shown in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
  • The crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile markings on either side.
  • There is a slight camber in the middle of the crossing.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving.
  • Traffic approaches the road from both directions.
  • On the south side of the street is a service road as shown in photograph 4.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile markings on either side of this service road.

Section 2. Bazeby Street / Cotton Street

  • This area on the north side of the road is block paved, has the occasional manhole cover and has a slight slope towards the road.
  • This area can be seen in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
  • For much of the distance between Bazeby Street and Cotton Street the pavement on south side of the street has a considerably smaller width.
  • There is a slight slope towards the road between the two streets.
  • Along the narrower section of the street is the Poplar High Street bus stop for Blackwall DLR 15, D6, D7, D8 and N550.
  • This bus stop reduces the width of the pavement to 90cm.
  • The bus stop can be seen in photograph 4.
  • As you approach Cotton Street the width of the pavement increases.
  • There is a concrete service road with dropped kerbs and tactile markings on either side as can be seen in photograph 6.
  • Along the north side of the road there is permit holder and pay by phone parking available.
  • Just before reaching Cotton Street there is a pedestrian crossing with dropped kerbs and tactile markings on either side as well traffic lights.
  • There is also a tactile central island and rotating cones for the crossing.
  • The crossing going from north to south can be seen in photograph 7.

Public Toilets

  • The nearest public toilets are in Tiller Street, Canary Wharf.
  • There may be toilet facilities located in café's along the route.
