Introduction

    • This route guide explains the most accessible route to floor 2 of Senate House and the Philip Marchant Building in the event that the lift in Senate House is out of service.
    • The route comprises a distance of approximately 210 metres with uneven surfaces, drop kerbs and slight slopes.
    • This route requires access to the AB Block and use of the lift as well as passing through 4 sets of manual doors.

Senate House Main Entrance to the Zebra Crossing in the Senate House Car Park

  • Upon leaving the Senate House, turn left and follow the pavement for approximately 12m to the zebra crossing in the car park and cross the road here.
  • The crossing is a tactile drop kerb on the near side and the far side is level.
  • The crossing is made of tarmac and is a clearly marked zebra crossing.
  • The pavement leading towards the crossing from Senate House is tarmac and is uneven with multiple manhole covers.
  • There are crosshatched road markings on the far side of the zebra crossing within the car park.

Zebra Crossing to Crossing Leading away from Senate House Car Park

  • Turn right onto the crossing towards the car park for the Senate House. Then turn left and continue by following the pavement towards Senate House.
  • Continue down the pavement in the car park to the end and follow the path to the left. Continue across the crossing towards the BA Block.
  • The crossing leading towards the AB Building is brick block paved and has tactile drop kerbs on both sides.
  • The pavement through the carpark is tarmac and has some seating, shown in photograph 2.
  • The distance between the zebra crossing in the car park and the crossing towards the BA Building is approximately 50m.

Pavement Outside BA Block to Crossing Between BA and BB Blocks

  • After crossing the road via the crossing, turn left and head down the road on the pavement for approximately 50m until reaching the crossing between BA and BB blocks and use this to cross the road.
  • The width of the path is reduced by a lamppost to 130cm.
  • The width of the path is reduced by a bollard to 140cm.
  • The width of the path is reduced by a signpost to 129cm.
  • The floor here is block paving and is uneven in places.
  • The crossing between the BB and BA blocks have tactile drop kerbs and the crossing itself is tarmac.

Crossing Between BA and BB Blocks to AB Block Entrance

  • After crossing the road between the BA and BB buildings, turn left and head straight across the road towards the entrance for the AB Building.
  • On the near side of the road is a tactile drop kerb.
  • Outside the entrance to building BB there is a bollard which makes the path thinner to a width of 155cm.
  • There is a slight uphill slope as you head from one side of the road to another.
  • There is a tarmac road between the two entrances.
  • As you continue towards building AB there are loading bays to either side and a strip of red paint along the side the road which may be uneven.

Outside Access (Blocks AA and AB Lift Lobby Entrance)

AB Lift into the AA Building

  • Upon exiting the lift, turn right and follow the room around to a set of doors.
  • The floor in this area is vinyl (on the AB side) then becomes carpet (on the AA side).

Entrance (Entrance to Access Main AA Building on Level 2)

    • This information is for the entrance located around the corner from the lift on level 2 of the AA/AB building.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).

    • The width of the door opening is 144cm (4ft 9in).

Building AA Level 2 from the Lift Lobby to the Stairwell

  • The floor in this area is carpet.
  • Head past the faculty student services and take the first corridor on the right.
  • Proceed down the corridor to the end then turn left down another corridor.
  • Continue down this corridor to the end and turn right and head through the set of doors.
  • The length of this section of the route is 60m.

Entrance (AA Building Level 2 access for the Stairwell)

    • This information is for the entrance located towards the rear of the building on level 2, next to the stairwell.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is one set of manual, heavy, double doors between the lift and this entrance.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • The main door(s) open(s) away from you (push).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) is / are heavy.
    • The width of the door opening is 136cm (4ft 6in).
  • Second Set of Doors View

AA Building Stairwell

  • The floor in this area is vinyl and near the top of the stairs there is tactile flooring.
  • From the entrance to the stairwell turn right and go through the doors towards the Senate House and the Philip Marchant building.

Outside Access (Entrance to Bridge Connecting AA Building to Senate House and Philip Marchant Building)

    • This information is for the entrance located at the rear of the AA building on level 2.
    • There is step free access at this entrance.
    • There is not a bell/buzzer.
    • There is not an intercom.
    • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The main door(s) open(s) towards you (pull).
    • The door(s) is / are double.
    • The door(s) is / are heavy.
    • The width of the door opening is 160cm (5ft 3in).
    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.

Bridge from the AA Building to Senate House and Philip Marchant Building on Level 2

  • The floor of the bridge is tarmac with 2 drains, making it uneven in places.
  • The walkway outside the Senate and Philip Marchant Building is uneven block paving.
  • Head across the bridge and then turn left onto the walkway.
  • The walkway outside the Senate and Philip Marchant Building has a canopy over it, shown in photograph 2.
  • The entrance to the Philip Marchant Building is on the right. This entrance is approximately 20m from the entrance to the bridge.
  • The entrance to the Senate House is on the left, around a corner. This entrance is approximately 35m from the entrance to the bridge.
