Access Guide
Introduction
- This is a route plan from Elmswood Hall to Belfast City Hospital.
- This route is approximately 550m long and should take around 7 minutes to complete.
- The main hazards on this route are uncontrolled crossings and busy roads.
Elmwood Hall to Elmwood Mews Crossing
- Exit Elmwood Hall and turn left towards Elmwood Avenue, crossing in front of the hall there is even brick block paving in this area as shown in photographs 1 and 2.
- Turn left on to Elmwood Avenue. There is a medium slope down to pavement with bollards a minimum of 161cm apart, as shown in photographs 3 and 4.
- Proceed down Elmwood Avenue which has a slight gradient towards the road with concrete block paving, there are occasional patches of tarmac across the pavement, as shown in photographs 5 and 6.
- Cross Elmwood Mews, this crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides of the tarmac surfaced road, as shown in photographs 7 and 8.
Elmwood Mews Crossing to Lisburn Road Crossing
- After crossing Elmwood Mews continue down Elmwood Avenue for approximately 200m, this is surfaced with concrete paving slabs.
- Parked cars can intrude onto pavement along this stretch of road, as shown in photographs 1 and 2.
- Continue past the Chaplaincy buildings
- Cross the second Elmwood Mews access road. There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides of the crossing. At the time of survey roadworks were narrowing the first crossing too 170cm. This crossing is shown in photographs 3 and 4.
- Continue along Elmwood Avenue for 50m.
- Along the last 25m of Elmwood Avenue there is a moderate slope up with tarmac and concrete paving, this is shown in photograph 5.
- Turn right at the end of the road and cross Elmwood Avenue, this is an uncontrolled moderately busy road crossing. There is tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides of the crossing. This crossing is shown in 6 and 7.
- After crossing Elmwood Avenue proceed straight down Lisburn Road. This is surfaced with tarmac and is uneven with an easy slope.
Lisburn Road Crossing to Belfast City Hospital
- Proceed approximately 50m down Lisburn Road.
- Turn left to cross Lisburn Road at the traffic light controlled road crossing. This crossing has no sound, but does have a rotating conical warning system and tactile paving on both sides and running across the pavement. The control system for this traffic light is 104cm high. This crossing is shown in photographs 1, 2, and 3.
- After crossing Lisburn Road turn immediately right on the island to cross Jubilee Road. This is on a separate traffic light controlled crossing.
- The traffic lights have no audible warning but do have a conical rotating warning system and tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides of the crossing. The control box for the traffic light is 104cm high. This crossing is shown in photographs 4 and 5.
- After crossing Jubilee Road turn left and walk up Jubilee Road. This pavement has a tarmac surface with a medium slope rising up as you proceed.
- Cross the hospital access road approximately 25m along Jubilee Road. This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides, this crossing is shown in photographs 7 and 8.
- Continue along Jubilee Road for approximately 75m.
- Upon reaching the zebra crossing with tactile paving, located on the left, follow the pavement round to the right.
- Continue down the pavement along the access road towards the Belfast City Hospital.
- This pavement has a tarmac surface is a medium slope down away from you.
- There are two sets of tactile paving stretching across the pavement, at the second set follow the pavement round to the right.
- Continue in front of the Cancer Centre, there are bollards located on the left of the pavement, there is tarmac and concrete paving along this area.
- Belfast City Hospitals main entrance is located directly in front of you at the end of the pavement. There is a level, paving slab and tarmac surface at the entrance to the Hospital. For more information please see the BCH Embedded Accommodation U Floor Guide.
