This guide covers the main shopping area of Chequer Street.
This guide runs from the junction of Victoria Street and St Peter's Street at the north end and the junction of High Street, London Road and Holywell Hill at the south end.
The Route is approximately 0.1 miles (161m) and takes approximately 4-6 minutes to walk.
The shopping area is on a steep downhill slope from the junction of Victoria Street and St Peter's Street at the north end and the junction of High Street, London Road and Holywell Hill at the south end.
Pathway surfaces consist of concrete paving slabs and block paving. The pathways do have some uneven sections which include some raised manhole covers. The road surfaces are tarmac with dropped kerbs and tactile paving at most crossing points. - The A414 North Orbital Road is approximately 2.3 miles away and the A1(M) approximately 5.0 miles away via St Peter's Street, Chequers Street, A1081 London Road and the A414 North Orbital Road.
- Chequer Street runs north to south through the City Centre.
- At the north end it becomes St Peter's Street
- At the south end it becomes Holywell Hill.

- There is on street Blue Badge parking and standard parking available on St Peter's Street and surrounding roads along with some nearby public car parks.
- By Bus
- There are some bus stop along Chequer Street and nearby St Peter's Street with direct services available to Harpenden, St Albans Local Area, Borehamwood, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Elstree and Luton.

Junction - Victoria Street, Chequer Street and St Peter's Street
- There is are several crossings at this junction to cross Victoria Street, Chequer Street and St Peter's Street.
- These are pedestrian crossings that have dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- The pedestrian crossings are push button controlled with visual signals.
- The surface of the roads is tarmac.
- The surface of the pathways is block paving.
- There is a steep downhill slope leading into both Chequer Street and Victoria Street from the crossing with an easy uphill slope into St Peter's Street.
St Peter's Street to Pudding Lane via Chequer Street
- The pathways on both sides of the road in this section are formed of concrete tiles/block paving.
- The pathways on both sides are wide.
- There is a steep downhill slope from St Peter's Street to Pudding Lane.
- There is an entrance to the Maltings Shopping Centre on the pathway opposite Bradford & Howley (the pathway to the left as you go between St Peter's Street and Pudding Lane).

Pudding Lane to Holywell Hill via Chequer Street
- The pathways on both sides of the road in this section are formed of concrete tiles/block paving.
- The pathways on both sides are wide.
- There is a steep downhill slope from Pudding Lane to Holywell Hill.
- There are some uneven areas on pathways throughout this section.
- There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bollards, bins and signboards.
- There is a pedestrian crossing next to Fatface on one side of the pathway and next to Ryman Stationers on the other pathway.
- This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
