Introduction - Alighting/Transferring

  • Exit Points View
    • Access to all exits from the Northern line is via steps (then escalators or lift).
      The nearest exit from the Northern line is the York Road exit.
      This is the only exit which leads directly outside without having to pass through any part of the mainline station.
      There are 2 exits from the underground station up to the mainline concourse, the nearest to the Northern line being the one which brings you out next to platform 19.
      From the mainline concourse you can use exit 3 (Cab Road) to get level access out to Cab Road or use the stepped exits 5 or 6 towards Waterloo Bridge and the South Bank respectively.
      Alternatively you can exit the mainline station via exit 2 (Waterloo Road) on the level below.
      There is lift access between the mainline station concourse and exit 2 (Waterloo Road).
      Exit 2 (Waterloo Road) can also be accessed from the underground via the Jubilee line interchange passage travelator and then lift or escalator from the Northern line.

      Access to the Jubilee line from the Northern line is via steps, then travelator and then lift or escalator (Route 6).

Platform(s) (Route 1 - To York Road Exit - Alight Train onto Platform)

Platform Exit (Route 1 - To York Road Exit - Leave Platform and Follow Passage to Concourse)

Station Exit (Route 1 - To York Road Exit - Exit into York Road)

  • Exit Point View
    • This information is for the exit located just beyond the barriers.
    • This exit is signed with 'Way out, South Bank, York Road'.
    • There is step-free access at this exit.
    • There are bollards at this exit.
    • The bollards do not contrast visually with the paving but have an identification band.
    • The minimum width between the bollards is 100cm.

Route 2 - To Mainline Station Concourse via Main Underground Ticket Hall

  • The approximate distance of this route is 75 metres (not including steps and escalators).
  • This route includes; 20 steps and 2 escalators.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit on the far right, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit on the far left.
  • Step 2 – Go up the steps and turn left and follow the passage to the Bakerloo line concourse area.
  • Step 3 - Turn diagonally left and take the escalator up to the main underground ticket hall.
  • Step 4 - bear diagonally left down the slope and pass through the ticket barriers.
  • Step 5 - proceed straight ahead down the slope until you reach the escalators on the left hand side.
  • Step 6 - take the escalator (or steps) up to the mainline station concourse.
  • From the mainline concourse you can use exit 3 (Cab Road) to get level access out to Cab Road or use the stepped exits 5 or 6 towards Waterloo Bridge and the South Bank respectively.
  • Alternatively, you can take escalators or lift down to exit 2 (Waterloo Road).

Route 3 - To Waterloo Road Exit

  • The approximate distance of this route is 215 metres (not including steps and travelator).
  • This route includes; 20 steps, a travelator and a lift.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit on the far left, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit on the far right.
  • Step 2 – go up the steps and turn left and follow the passage until you reach the northern line concourse area.
  • Step 3 - cross the northern line concourse area into the opposite passage towards the Jubilee line.
  • Step 4 - follow the interchange passage until you reach the travelator.
  • Step 5 - take the travelator to the opposite end of the passage.
  • Step 6 – take the 2nd passage on the right signed for the Jubilee line.
  • Step 7 – reach the Jubilee line concourse area and cross it diagonally to the right to the 2nd passage from the left on the opposite side.
  • Step 8 – turn right and take the lift up to level 0.
  • Step 9 – exit the lift and turn right, following the walkway towards the barriers.
  • Step 10 - pass through the barriers on the left hand side and continue until you reach exit 2 (Waterloo Road) on the left.
  • Step 11 - exit onto Waterloo Road.

Route 4 - Transfer to Bakerloo Line Northbound

  • The approximate distance of this route is 60 metres (not including steps).
  • This route includes; 20 steps and then 11 more steps.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit 2nd from the right, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit 2nd from the left.
  • Step 2 – go up the steps, turn right and follow the passage until you reach the Bakerloo line concourse area.
  • Step 3 – cross the concourse to the opposite passage signed for the Bakerloo line.
  • Step 4 – take the 2nd passage on the right and turn immediately left down the steps.
  • Step 5 - follow the sloped passage straight ahead to the platform.

Route 5 - Transfer to Bakerloo Line Southbound

  • The approximate distance of this route is 70 metres (not including steps).
  • This route includes; 20 steps and a long upwards slope with a slight gradient.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit on the far right, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit on the far left.
  • Step 2 – go up the steps, turn left and follow the passage until you reach the Bakerloo line concourse area.
  • Step 3 – cross the concourse diagonally to the left to the 1st passage.
  • Step 4 – take the 1st passage on the left and then the 2nd passage on the right signed for the Bakerloo line southbound platform.
  • Step 5 – follow the sloped passage until you reach the platform.

Route 6 - Transfer to Jubilee Line

  • The approximate distance of this route is 170 metres (not including steps and travelator).
  • This route includes; 20 steps, a travelator and a lift.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit on the far left, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit on the far right.
  • Step 2 – go up the steps and turn left and follow the passage until you reach the Northern line concourse area, following signage towards the Jubilee line.
  • Step 3 - cross the Northern Line concourse area into the opposite passage towards the Jubilee line.
  • Step 4 - follow the interchange passage until you reach the travelator.
  • Step 5 - take the travelator to the opposite end of the passage.
  • Step 6 – take the 2nd passage on the right signed for the Jubilee line.
  • Step 7 – reach the Jubilee line concourse area and cross it diagonally to the right to the 2nd passage from the left on the opposite side.
  • Step 8 – turn right and take the lift down to level -2.
  • Step 9 - exit the lift, go straight ahead and then either turn right to the westbound platform 5 or left to the eastbound platform 6.

Route 7 - Transfer to Waterloo & City Line

  • The approximate distance of this route is 165 metres (not including steps and escalators).
  • This route includes; 20 steps, an escalator, some short slopes and then either a long downwards ramp (with a steep gradient and no resting areas) or 28 steps.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • Step 1 - alight the train. If you are on the northbound platform leave via the exit on the far right, if on the southbound platform leave via the exit on the far left.
  • Step 2 – go up the steps, turn left and follow the passage to the Bakerloo line concourse area.
  • Step 3 - turn diagonally left and take the escalator up to the main underground ticket hall.
  • Step 4 - bear diagonally left down the slope and pass through the ticket barriers
  • Step 5 – take the passage to the right of the pillar, past the ticket machines, down the slope and turn right.
  • Step 6 – pass through the doorway onto the Waterloo & City line concourse area.
  • Step 7 – either take the steps or the steep slope down to the Waterloo & City line - departures platform.
