Getting Here

  • Jubilee Square is a pedestrianised zone located in Woking town centre.
  • It is located at the crossing of Church Street East, Mercia Walk and Market Walk.
  • There are bus stops located on Cawsey Way, The Broadway, Locke Way and Brewery Road.
  • The nearest railway station is Woking.
  • There are taxi ranks located on Station Approach and Church Path, near Woking station.

Parking

  • There are 9 Blue Badge bays on Church Street East, on the north east side of Jubilee Square. They are approximately 250cm wide x 600cm deep.
  • There are 6 Blue Badge bays on Commercial Way, on the east side of Jubilee Square. They are approximately 250cm wide x 600cm deep.
  • Public Parking.
  • There are 2 chargeable public car parks with Blue Badge bays. Parking is not free for Blue Badge holders:-
  • 1. Woking Shopping Car Park is located on Victoria Way, on the west side of Jubilee Square.
  • 2. Victoria Way Car Park is located on the north side of Jubilee Square.
  • On Street Parking (0*)
  • There are pay and display standard on-street parking bays on Christchurch Way. Parking is free in these bays for those displaying a valid Blue Badge.

Jubilee Square Overview

  • Jubilee Square is situated in the middle of Woking town centre with Woking station to its south and Peacocks shopping centre to its west.
  • The pedestrianised zone covered by this guide runs from Market Walk (west) through Jubilee Square to Church Street East (east) and from Mercia Walk (north) across Jubilee Square to Mercia Walk (south).
  • There is a non-pedestrianised area included in this guide, along Church Street East.
  • The total length of the route is approximately 0.2km (0.12 miles).
  • Jubilee Square is divided up into 5 sections in this guide. The square itself and access from the north side through to the west:-
  • 1. Jubilee Square;
  • 2. Mercia Walk (north) to Jubilee Square;
  • 3. Church Street East (east) to Jubilee Square;
  • 4. Mercia Walk (south) to Jubilee Square;
  • 5. Market Walk (west) to Jubilee Square.
  • Jubilee Square, Mercia Walk and Market Walk form part of the main pedestrianised area of the town centre.

Section 1. Jubilee Square

  • This section covers the core area of Jubilee Square.
  • The surface of the square is block paving and is even.
  • The square is comprised of two levels. The centre and north west edges are level and the south east perimeter is raised.
  • There are steps on the east side near Barclays and on the south side by Christ Church Woking. The steps are medium height, are clearly marked, have tactile paving at the top and bottom and have handrails on both sides (shown in photographs 2 and 3).
  • Moving west along the raised area with Church Street East at your back, there is a slight slope which hugs the perimeter of the square past Mercia Walk and down towards Market Walk (shown in photograph 4).
  • Within the square there are benches, trees and bins, table tennis tables as well as large chess and checkers boards.
  • In the centre of the square is a large war memorial commemorating the First and Second World Wars. There is also a bronze statue celebrating the London 2012 Paralympic Games (shown in photographs 6-9).
  • Within the lowered part of the square there is also a large map of the Woking town centre area which has information on toilets, cafes, shopping, car parking and more (shown in photograph 10).

Section 2. Mercia Walk (north) to Jubilee Square

  • The length of this section is approximately 90m. The first two photographs show each end of the section.
  • Facing south east down Mercia Walk with Victoria Way behind, the Ambassadors cinema is to the right, and Woking Borough Council offices are on the left.
  • The entire section is pedestrianised.
  • The pavement is concrete slabs and is even.
  • There is a very slight slope along the length of Mercia Walk towards Jubilee Square.
  • Heading towards Jubilee Square, there is a fountain on the right with a raised area with brick paving around it.
  • Heading south east along Mercia Walk past the fountain, the pavement changes to small granite tiles. It is even, but there is a drain that runs along the right side for the rest of the section which causes a slight slope towards it.
  • There are benches, bins and trees along the left side of the walk as well as two bicycle stands.
  • As you near Jubilee Square, Woking Library is located on the right.
  • On the left, as you reach Jubilee Square, there 3 medium steps with handrails on both sides and a slight ramp with handrails on both sides.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have tactile paving at the bottom and top.
  • The ramp is approximately 140cm in width.

Section 3. Church Street East (east) to Jubilee Square

  • The length of this section is approximately 115m.
  • The first 2 photographs show each end of the section.
  • This section is not pedestrianised.
  • Looking west along Church Street East towards Jubilee Square the pavement is on the left with the Blue Badge bays on the left side of the road but on your right.
  • The pavement is concrete slab paving in the centre with tiled brick at the sides and is even.
  • The pavement is approximately 200cm wide.
  • On the right there are silver bollards by the Blue Badge bays and on the left is a lamp post which restricts the pavement width to about 140cm.
  • There is a ramp with a handrail to the left leading down from a shop.
  • Crossing - Church Street East
  • Facing towards Jubilee Square, there is a junction on the left and there is a crossing straight ahead.
  • There are no crossing controls, visual indicators or audio alert.
  • At the edge of the pavements is a dropped kerb with tactile paving and a bollard to the left.
  • The road is two lanes wide and has two way traffic.
  • Continuing west along Church Street East, the pavement is concrete slab paving.
  • There are bins on the left as well as drain covers on the pavement.
  • There are more Blue Badge bays on the right and a telephone box on the left.
  • The pavement is restricted by the telephone box and is approximately 100cm wide.
  • Heading towards the entrance to Jubilee Square there are large iron gates to the centre. These are locked.
  • To the left side of the pavement there are 4 medium steps.
  • They have ribbed textured paving at the top and bottom.
  • To the right of the steps, there is a smaller gate with a width of approximately 90cm.
  • Immediately beyond the gate is a slight ramp with handrails on both sides with a width of approximately 140cm.

Section 4. Mercia Walk (south) to Jubilee Square

  • The length of this section is approximately 50m.
  • The first two photographs show each end of the section.
  • Facing north along Mercia Walk towards Jubilee Square, there is a sign for Mercia Walk and Wolsey Place on the roof of the pedestrianised shopping area.
  • This section is pedestrianised.
  • The pavement is level towards Jubilee Square.
  • There is a roof along Mercia Walk, and there are supporting pillars in the middle, approximately every 10m.
  • The surface of the path is grey granite tiles. The path is even.
  • There are shops and restaurants along the length of the walk.
  • There are large flower pots on the right, and cafes with outside seating on the left.
  • About 30m along, the area becomes open air.
  • There is an entrance to Wolsey Place shopping centre to the left.
  • Mercia Walk then opens onto Jubilee Square.

Section 5. Market Walk (west) to Jubilee Square

  • The length of this section is approximately 120m.
  • The first 2 photographs show each end of the section.
  • Looking east along Market Walk towards Jubilee Square, Woking Market is ahead and lifts to Shoppers' red car park are at the rear.
  • This area is pedestrianised.
  • Market Walk has a slight slope along its length up to Jubilee Square.
  • The market has a roof and the surface of the floor is granite tiles.
  • The width of Market Walk is approximately 3.5m.
  • There are stalls on both sides along the walk, selling food produce and food to take away.
  • About 60m along the walk towards Jubilee Square, there is an entrance to Shoppers' yellow car park on the left and an entrance to Wolsey Place shopping centre on the right.
  • The walk continues with stalls now only on the right.
  • There is overhead signage for Jubilee Square.
  • There is an entrance to Peacocks shopping centre on the left.
  • Market Walk opens onto Jubilee Square.

  • Accessible and standard toilets may be found in Peacocks shopping centre, Wolsey Place Shopping Centre and Victoria Way Car Park.
