Introduction

  • Cregagh Glen leads into the Castlereagh hills. It can be walked as a linear route, which returns by way of the same path. It can be walked in either direction, parking in local streets at the Knockbreda Road end, or in the National Trust car park on Lisnabreeny Road. Those access points are covered in this guide along with the one in Manse Road.
  • Part of the route is through a wooded glen. At the top of the glen Manse Road can be crossed via a walkway which leads into the grounds of Lisnabreeny House. Lisnabreeny House was once the home of poet Nesca Robb, briefly a youth hostel and army headquarters before restoration as part of Lagan College. At the Lisnabreeny Road end is the Rath at the top of the hills which is close to the car park.

Parking - Knockbreda Road

Access Point - National Trust Car Park

  • There is a gated access point in the National Trust car park off Lisnabreeny Road.
  • The gate opens away from you (push) and is light.
  • The width of the gate opening is 120cm (3ft 9in).
  • The path beyond the gate has a loose chipping surface to start with but has a grass / muddy surface thereafter, as you head further into the glen.
  • There are easy and moderate slopes along the path.

Access Point - Manse Road

  • There is a gated access point on Manse Road.
  • The gate opens away from you (push) and is light.
  • The width of the gate opening is 112cm (3ft 7).
  • There is a moderate slope on the pavement in front of the gate and also on the path immediately beyond it.

Access Point - Knockbreda Road

  • There is an open access point to the glen from off the Upper Knockbreda Road.
  • The width of the opening is 250cm (8ft).
  • There is an easy slope on the approach to this access point.
  • Paths beyond the access point have a loose chipping surface and some easy to moderate slopes.

Access Information

  • At certain points along the glen you can choose to follow the main path or follow the smaller path along the Glen River itself.
  • There easy, moderate and steep slopes on the paths and walkways.
  • There are also some stepped sections and stiles on some of the paths.
  • The paths have gravel and earth surfaces and can be muddy in places.
  • Bench seating is available.
