Getting Here

  • By Car
  • The shopping area surveyed is located mainly on St Andrews Street and Sidney Street which is approximately 1.9 miles from the M11 junction 13 which gives you direct links to London to the south and A1 to the north. This is via Sidney Street, Bridge Street, Magdalene Street, Northampton Street, and Madingley Road.
  • By Bus
  • There are several bus stops on St Andrews Street, Emmanuel Street, and Hobson Street with direct links to Fen Ditton, Arbury, Cambridge Railway Station, Madingley Road Park and Ride, and several other locations.

  • By Train
  • Cambridge Railway Station is approximately 1.1 miles away from the southern end of the route where St Andrews Street and Downing Street meet.
  • There are direct services to Norwich, Peterborough, Ely, London Liverpool Street, London Kings Cross, Royston, and Stevenage.
  • There is step free access via lifts to all platforms at this station.
  • Staff are available to assist with boarding via ramps.

  • There is a nearby car park available at the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre with 10+ Blue Badge parking bays and plenty of standard parking bays available off Corn Exchange Street. This is located close to the junction of Downing Street and St Andrews Street.

1. Junction – Downing Street and St Andrews Street

  • There are three pedestrian crossings at this junction.
  • These crossings have dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides with rotating cones available on the underside of the control box.
  • The road along Downing Street is one way with traffic coming towards you only along Downing Street to the junction with St Andrews Street.
  • The road on St Andrews Street is two ways with traffic coming from the left and right as you exit Downing Street only.
  • The surface of the roads is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and is uneven in places.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading into Downing Street from St Andrews Street.
  • St Andrews Street is on a slight to steep downhill slope along St Andrews Street as you exit Downing Street (left to right).
  • Emmanuel College is opposite the Junction of Downing Street and St Andrews Street.

2. Downing Street to Emmanuel Street via St Andrews Street

  • The distance from Downing Street to Emmanuel Street via St Andrews Street is approximately 67 metres.
  • As you exit the junction with Downing Street to Emmanuel Street via St Andrews Street there is a slight to steep uphill slope leading along St Andrews Street.
  • The pavement is block paving.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some signs and other obstructions on the pathway.
  • There are some side roads/entrances to cross, and these are mainly level with the pathways, with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • There are bus stops available on the left side of the road as you exit Downing Street onto St Andrews Street.

3. Junction – Emmanuel Street and St Andrews Street

  • There are two pedestrian crossings at this junction with dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • The crossing over St Andrews Street just has dropped kerbs and tactile paving with one way traffic coming from the junction (Emmanuel Street and St Andrews Street).
  • The surface of the roads is tarmac.
  • The road is one way with traffic leading out of Emmanuel Street into St Andrews Street.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and uneven in places.
  • There is a slight uphill slope leading into St Andrews Street and Emmanuel Street from the junction if you were coming from the direction of Downing Street.

4. Emmanuel Street to Sidney Street via St Andrews Street

  • The distance from Emmanuel Street to Sidney Street via St Andrews Street is approximately 160 metres.
  • As you exit the junction of Emmanuel Street and St Andrews Street there is a slight to steep downhill slope leading along St Andrews Street. The traffic is one way along St Andrews Street travelling from the junction of Emmanuel Street toward Sidney Street.
  • The pavement is paving slabs.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some signs and other obstructions on the pathway.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
  • There are some side roads/entrances to cross, and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • There are bus stops available on the left side of the road if you are travelling from Emmanuel Street toward Sidney Street.
  • There is an entrance into the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre on the left side of the road as you walk along St Andrews Street from the junction of Emmanuel Street towards Sidney Street as shown in photograph 2. These entrances have automatic double doors. 5. Junction – Sidney Street, Hobson Street and St Andrews Street

  • There are two crossings at this junction.
  • Only the crossing over Sidney Street has dropped kerbs but does not have tactile paving.
  • The surface of the roads is tarmac.
  • The roadway is one way with traffic with traffic coming along St Andrews from the direction of Emmanuel Street and into Hobson Street. Sidney Street is a pedestrian and cycle area only.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and uneven in places.
  • The pathways are wide but do narrow in parts as you pass sign boards, bollards, cycle racks, and outdoor furniture.
  • There is a slight uphill slope leading into Sidney Street from the junction with Hobson Street and St Andrews Street.
  • There is a slight uphill slope leading into Hobson Street from the junction with Sidney Street and St Andrews Street.
  • There is a slight downhill slope on St Andrews Street leading from the junction of Hobson Street and Sidney Street.
  • There is an entrance into the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre on the left side of the road as you walk along St Andrews Street into Sidney Street at the junction of Sidney Street, St Andrews Street and Hobson Street. These entrances have automatic double doors. 6. St Andrews Street to Market Street via Sidney Street

  • The distance from St Andrews Street to Market Street via Sidney Street is approximately 136 metres
  • As you exit the junction of St Andrews Street, Hobson Street and Sidney Street there is a slight to steep uphill slope leading along Sidney Street which is a pedestrianised area.
  • The pavement is block paving.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
  • There are some bollards along the edge of the path. The bollards contrast with the pavement.
  • There are some side entrances to cross, and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • There are nearby bus stops available on St Andrews Street and Hobson Street.
  • There are several seating areas available along this section of the route in the form of metal benches, most do not have armrests.

7. Junction – Sidney Street and Market Street

  • There are three crossings at this junction.
  • All the crossings are level with the road surface.
  • The surface of the roads is block paving
  • This area is for pedestrians and cyclists only.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and uneven in places.
  • The pathways are wide but do narrow in parts too as you pass sign boards, bollards, cycle racks and outdoor furniture.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading into Market Street from the junction with Sidney Street.
  • There is a slight uphill slope along Sidney Street as you exit Market Street into Sidney Street to the left and downhill to the right.

8. Market Street to Green Street via Sidney Street

  • The distance from Market Street to Green Street via Sidney Street is approximately 96 metres
  • As you exit the junction of Sidney Street and Market Street there is a slight uphill slope along Sidney Street toward Green Street which is a pedestrianised area.
  • The pavement is block paving.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some signs and other obstructions on the pathway.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
  • There are some side entrances to cross, and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • There are no nearby bus stops available at this point.

9. Junction – Green Street and Sidney Street

  • There are three crossings at this junction.
  • All the crossings are level with the road or have a very small threshold.
  • The surface of the roads is block paving.
  • This area is for pedestrians and cyclists only.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and is uneven in places.
  • The pathways are wide but do narrow in parts as you pass sign boards, bollards, cycle racks, and outdoor furniture.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading into Green Street from the junction with Sidney Street.
  • There is a slight uphill slope along Sidney Street as you exit Green Street into Sidney Street to the left and downhill to the right.

10. Green Street to Jesus Lane via Sidney Street

  • The distance from Green Street to Jesus Lane via Sidney Street is approximately 102 metres.
  • As you exit the junction of Sidney Street and Green Street there is a slight uphill slope along Sidney Street toward Jesus Lane which is a pedestrianised area.
  • The pavement is block paving.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some signs and other obstructions on the pathway.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.

11. Junction- Sidney Street and Jesus Lane

  • There are three crossings at this junction.
  • Only the crossing over Sidney Street has dropped kerbs but no tactile paving.
  • The surface of the roads is block paving and tarmac.
  • The roadway is on Jesus Lane and Bridge Street and is one way with traffic going coming from your right as you exit Sidney Street from Jesus Lane into Bridge Street. Sidney Street is for pedestrians and cyclists only.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete and uneven in places.
  • The pathways are wide but do narrow in parts as you pass sign boards, bollards, cycle racks, and outdoor furniture.
  • There is a slight downhill slope leading into Sidney Street from the junction with Jesus Lane and Bridge Street.
  • There is a slight uphill slope along Bridge Street from the junction with Jesus Lane and Sidney Street.
  • There is a slight uphill slope along Jesus Lane from the junction with Bridge Street and Sidney Street.
  • There is a bus stop on Jesus Lane close to the junction.
