Introduction

  • The following information describes the route from the Somers Road Car Park to the Elgoods Brewery via a series of historical sites in the town of Wisbech.
  • The route is approximately 2.0 miles and takes approximately 1.5 – 2 hours walk depending on the speed you go.
  • The surface of the paths are block paving, tarmac and cobbles with some tactile paving.
  • The surface of the roads are a mixture of tarmac and block paving.
  • The pathway alternates between the left and right hand side of the road so crossing is required. There are steps on this route near the Wisbech Fenland Museum/Museum Square. These steps are avoidable by amending the route via Market Place and Love Lane to avoid the steps.
  • The potential hazards along this route include; roads, bollards, street furniture, narrow gaps, squeeze gaps, slight to steep slopes, loose chippings/gravel, steps and undulated pathways.

Getting Here

  • By Car
  • The town is situated in between Peterborough and King’s Lynn along the A47. Wisbech is approximately 26 miles from the A1M (Fletton Parkway Interchange) via the A47. The A1M gives direct links to London to the south and the Midlands and north of England to the north.
  • By Bus
  • The nearest bus stop at the start of the route is Horse Fair approximately 0.1 miles from the start of the route.

  • By Train
  • Peterborough Railway station is approximately 22 miles from the start of the route. Peterborough has direct links to London and the north.
  • From Peterborough take the B or C Excel bus to Horse Fair which is approximately 0.1 mile from the start of the route.
  • There is step free access to all platforms at Peterborough and assistance can be booked.

Parking

  • Public Car Parks:
  • There are three car parks that are close to the start of the route: Somers Road, St Peter’s, and Church Terrace.
  • The nearest car park to the start of the route is Somers Road Car park.
  • This car park is free for up to 24 hours.
  • There are 9 blue badge bays located near the pedestrian exit to Alexandra Road.
  • On street parking:
  • There is on street parking available at various points along the route.
  • There is on street parking available at the following areas: Bridge Street, High Street, Market Street, Union Place, The Crescent, Love Lane, Cornhill, Old Market, and North Brink.

1: Alexandra Road to South Brink

  • The distance from Alexandra Road (exiting the Somers Road car park) to South Brink is approximately 190 metres long.
  • The pathway is on the left hand side of the road.
  • The pathway is a mixture of tarmac and block paving.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards South Brink.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; narrow pathways, undulating pathways, bollards and crossings.

2: Junction – South Brink and Alexandra Road

  • There is a single crossing at this junction.
  • There is a dropped kerb either side of Alexandra Road with tactile paving.
  • There is a steep slope down and back up the dropped kerb.
  • The road surface is tarmac.
  • One way traffic flows out of Alexandra Road into South Brink.
  • At the time of survey (August 2022) there was scaffolding present at this junction as shown in photographs 2 and 3.

3: Alexandra Road to Bridge Street via South Brink

  • The distance from Alexandra Road to Bridge Street is approximately 26m.
  • The pathway is on the right hand side of the road.
  • The pathway is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep downhill slope towards Bridge Street.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; undulating pathways.
  • At the time of survey (August 2022) there was scaffolding along this section of the route.

4: Junction – Bridge Street and South Brink/Nene Quay

  • There are two crossings at this junction.
  • There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving at the first crossing and level kerbs with tactile paving on the island and the second crossing.
  • The road surface is tarmac.
  • Two way traffic flows in and out of Bridge Street.

5: Junction – Bridge Street and Bridge Street

  • There is one crossing at this junction.
  • The crossing is level with the pathway.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs without tactile paving.
  • The road surface is block paving.
  • One way traffic flows into Bridge Street from Nene Quay.

6: Bridge Street to High Street via York Row

  • The distance from Bridge Street to High Street is approximately 50 metres long.
  • The pathway is on the left hand side of the road.
  • The pathway is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac and block paving.
  • There is a slight to steep downhill slope towards the High Street.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; bollards.
  • There is on street parking in marked bays as shown in photograph 1.

7: Junction - York Row and High Street

  • There is a single crossing at this junction.
  • The crossing is level with the pathway.
  • The road surface is a mixture of block paving and cobbles.
  • One way traffic flows out of the High Street into York Row.
  • The following obstructions are present at this crossing; bollards and street furniture.

8: York Row to Market Street via High Street and Market Place

  • The distance from York Row to Market Street is approximately 160 metres long.
  • The pathway is on both sides of the road.
  • The pathway is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is block paving.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope until halfway along the High Street. There is then a slight to steep downhill slope towards Market Place.
  • There is one way traffic coming towards you on this part of the route.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; bollards, street furniture and box planters.
  • There is bench seating available in Market Place as shown in photographs 10 and 11.
  • There is on street parking in marked bays where the High Street Turns into Market Place as shown in photograph 4.

9: Junction – Market Place and Market Street

  • There is a single crossing at this junction.
  • The crossing is level with the roadway.
  • The roadway surface is block paving.
  • One way traffic flows along Market Place and out of Market Street into Market Place.

10: Market Place to Union Place via Market Street

  • The distance from Market Place to Union Place is approximately 72 metres long.
  • The pathway is on both sides of the road.
  • The pathway is block paving.
  • The roadway surface is block paving.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; bollards, squeeze gap.
  • There is on street parking in marked bays as shown in photographs 3 and 5 towards the end of Market Street.

11: Junction – Union Place and Market Street

  • There is a single crossing at this junction.
  • There is a dropped kerb either side of Market Street with no tactile paving.
  • The road surface is block paving.
  • One way traffic flows out of Market Street and Union Place into Ely Place.

12: Market Street to The Crescent via Union Place

  • The distance from Market Street to The Crescent is approximately 57 metres.
  • The pathway is on the right hand side of the road.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is block paving.
  • There is on street parking in unmarked bays as shown in photograph 1.

13: Junction – Union Place and The Crescent

  • There is a single crossing at this junction.
  • There are no dropped kerbs at this junction.
  • The road surface is block paving.
  • One way traffic flows out of The Crescent and into Union Place.

14: The Crescent to Museum Square

  • The distance from The Crescent to Museum Square is approximately 120 metres.
  • The pathway is on the right hand side of the road.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is block paving.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards Museum Square.
  • There is on street parking in unmarked bays as shown in photographs 1, 2, 3, and 5.

15: Museum Square to St Peter and St Pauls Parish Church

  • The distance from Museum Square to St Peter and St Pauls Parish Church is approximately 120 metres.
  • This area is pedestrianised.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs and concrete.
  • The following obstructions are on this section of the route; bollards, steps and street furniture.
  • There are 5 steps leading down from Museum Square to the pathway for the church as shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • There are handrails on either side of the steps. For step free access please continue along Market Place.
  • There is seating available outside the Wisbech Fenland Museum as shown in photograph 10.

16: St Peter and St Pauls Parish Church to Alexandra Road via Love Lane

  • The distance from St Peter and St Pauls Parish Church to Alexandra Road is approximately 180 metres.
  • The pathway surface is a mixture of block paving and tarmac.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep downhill slope towards Alexandra Road.
  • The following obstructions are on this section of the route; gravel/loose chippings (photograph 5) and narrow pathways.

17: Junction – Love Lane and Alexandra Road

  • There is one crossing at this junction.
  • There are dropped kerbs on either side of Love Lane without tactile paving.
  • The pathway surface is tarmac.
  • The road surface is tarmac.
  • Two way traffic flows in and out of Love Lane into Alexandra Road.

18: Love Lane to South Brink via Alexandra Road

  • The distance from Love Lane to South Brink is approximately 200 metres.
  • The pathway is on both sides of the road until the crossing with Post Office Lane where the pathway returns to the left hand side.
  • The pathway surface is a mixture of tarmac and paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is a mixture of tarmac and block paving.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards South Brink.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; narrow pathways, undulating pathways, bollards and crossings.

19: Alexandra Road to Somers Road via South Brink

  • The distance from Alexandra Road to Somers Road is approximately 77 metres.
  • The pathway is on the left hand side of the road.
  • The pathway surface is a mixture of tarmac and paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards Somers Road.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; tactile paving and lampposts.

20: Junction – Somers Road and South Brink

  • There is one crossing at this junction.
  • There are dropped kerbs on either side of Somers Road without tactile paving.
  • The pathway surface is a mixture of block paving and tarmac.
  • The road surface is tarmac.
  • One way traffic flows into Somers Road from South Brink.
  • There is a steep slope to the left as you come to the first dropped kerb as shown in photograph 2.

21: Somers Road to South Brink via South Brink

  • The distance from Somers Road to South Brink is approximately 90 metres.
  • The pathway is on the right hand side of the road.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards Town Bridge.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; tactile paving and lampposts.

22: Junction – South Brink and Town Bridge

  • There are two crossings at this junction.
  • There are dropped kerbs on either side of South Brink with tactile paving.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs.
  • The road surface is tarmac.
  • Two way traffic flows across South Brink.

23: South Brink to Old Market via Town Bridge

  • The distance from South Brink to Old Market is approximately 46 metres.
  • The pathway is on both sides of the road.
  • The pathway surface is paving slabs.
  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards the middle of Town Bridge and then a slight to steep downhill slope towards Old Market.
  • The following obstructions are present at this section; tactile paving, bollards.

24: Junction – Town Bridge and Old Market

  • There are two crossings at this junction.
  • There are dropped kerbs on either side of Cornhill with tactile paving.
  • There is a slight to steep downhill slope at both crossings.

25: Old Market to Chapel Road via Cornhill and North Brink

  • The distance from Old Market to Chapel Road is approximately 350 metres.

  • The roadway surface is tarmac.
  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards Chapel Road.

26: Junction: Chapel Road and North Brink

  • There is one crossing at this junction.
  • There are dropped kerbs on either side of Chapel Road with tactile paving.

  • Two way traffic flows along Chapel Road and out of either end of North Brink.

27: Chapel Road to Barton Road via North Brink

  • The distance from Chapel Road to Barton Road is approximately 240 metres.
  • The pathway is on the right hand side of the road.
  • The pathway surface is block paving.

  • There is a slight to steep uphill slope towards Barton Road.
