Overview

Getting Inside

  • Access on the approach to the building varies depending on which building/area you approach from.
  • There is step-free level access on the approach to the building from Anselm. There is a steep slope on the approach to the building from Gate 5 and Verena Holmes.
    There is a slight slope on the approach to the building from the Red Car Park and Anselm Bungalow.
  • Becket has two entrances.
    The East Door provides step-free access (via a slight ramp) to the ground floor of the east wing.
    The West Door provides step-free access (via a slight ramp) to the ground floor of the west wing. The ramp at this entrance bypasses three clearly marked steps.
    There are push-pad activated single automatic doors at both entrances.
    Since there is no internal access between the east and west wings of the building, the East Door accesses the east wing of the building only, and the West Door accesses the west wing of the building only.
  • The entrances are signed as "Becket - East Door" and "Becket - West Door".
  • The East Door provides step-free access (via a slight ramp) to the ground floor of the east wing.
    The West Door provides step-free access (via a slight ramp) to the ground floor of the west wing.

Getting Around

  • Access to the first and second floors of both wings of the building is via stairs only.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes consist of low pile carpet.
  • There are not resting areas in any circulation areas of the building.
  • There is no wayfinding signage in the building; however rooms within the building are clearly numbered and signed with written text on their doors.
  • There are single automatic doors to access the ground floor corridors in both wings of the building. There are single manual doors to enter and exit both stairwells on the first and second floors.
  • The corridors on all floors are narrow (minimum width 85cm). Doors into all rooms, including the staff kitchen and all standard toilets, are also narrow (minimum width 62cm).

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • The nearest toilet with adaptations is located in Anselm.
    • The female step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground floor of the west wing, to the left as you enter through the west door; and on the ground floor of the east wing, to the right as you enter through the east door.
    • The male step-free toilet facilities are located on the second floor of the west wing, to the left as you exit the stairwell.
    • The shared step-free toilet facilities are located on the first and second floors of the east wing, to the right as you exit the stairwell.

Parking (Red Car Park)

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located to the west of the building, off North Holmes Road.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
    • The car park surface consists of tarmac and block paving.
    • There are 7 designated Blue Badge parking bays available.
    • The Blue Badge bays are clearly marked.
    • The surveyed Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 250cm (width) x 533cm (depth).
    • There is a marked zone to both sides but not at the rear.
    • The width of the marked zone is 129cm.
    • The dimensions of the designated Blue Badge parking bays vary in size.
    • The nearest designated bay is 58m from the west door.
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking has steep ramps or slopes, uneven surfaces and bollards.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • This car park is for Blue Badge holders and staff permit holders only.
    • Parking is free for all users.
    • Clearly presented parking signs are available.
    • Parking is for staff permit holders and Blue Badge holders only. Blue Badge holders must contact the university in advance in order to arrange parking.
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Points View
    • There is 1 electric vehicle charging point.
    • The dimensions of the surveyed electric vehicle charging bay are 225cm (width) x 530cm (depth).
    • The nozzle holster is at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
    • The charging points require an app.
    • There are no electric vehicle charging points designated for Blue Badge holders.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • On-street Parking View
    • On-street standard parking is available .
    • There is standard on-street parking available in marked bays on North Holmes Road.

Entrance (West Door)

  • This entrance is located to the left as you face the building from the courtyard outside Anselm.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
  • The ramp bypasses the steps.
  • There are 3 steps with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are clearly marked.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door has a locked extension leaf.
  • The door opens towards you.

Stairs (West Stairs)

  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.

Entrance (East Door)

  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 90cm.

Stairs (East Stairs)

  • The stairs surveyed are located immediately to the left as you enter the building through the East Door.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor, first floor and second floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 15 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the right going up.
