Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building varies depending on the direction you approach from.
  • There is a slight slope on the approach to the Erasmus East and Forensic Laboratory and Teaching Area entrances from the lane running alongside The King's School Canterbury.
    There are 5 steps, bypassed by a steep slope, on the approach to these entrances from Newton and Laud.
    There is step-free level access (via very easy slopes) on all routes to the Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance.
    There is a choice of 6 steps, or an alternative route of 12 steps bypassed by a steep slope, on the approach to the Erasmus West entrance.
  • Erasmus has 4 entrances. All four entrances provide step-free access to different parts of the ground floor.
    There is step-free level access via double automatic doors at the Erasmus East entrance.
    There are steep ramps, with a single automatic door (out of order when surveyed in April 2025), followed by a single manual door (permanently held open) at the Forensic Laboratory and Teaching Area entrance.
    There is a slight ramp followed by two sets of push-pad activated double automatic doors (each with one leaf locked) at the Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance.
    There is step-free level access via two sets of push-pad activated double automatic doors (each with one leaf locked) at the Erasmus West entrance.
  • The Erasmus East entrance is signed as "Erasmus".
    The Forensic Laboratory and Teaching Area entrance is signed as "School of Law, Criminal Justice & Policing - Forensic Laboratory and teaching area".
    The Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance is signed as "Office of the Vice Chancellor".
    The Erasmus West entrance is signed as "Erasmus" above the door, and "Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellors - Erasmus West" on the approach with 6 steps.
  • There is step-free level access via double automatic doors at the Erasmus East entrance.
  • There is step-free level access via double automatic doors at the Erasmus East entrance.
    There are steep ramps, with a single automatic door (out of order when surveyed in April 2025), followed by a single manual door (permanently held open) at the Forensic Laboratory and Teaching Area entrance.
    There is a slight ramp followed by two sets of push-pad activated double automatic doors (each with one leaf locked) at the Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance.
    There is step-free level access via two sets of push-pad activated double automatic doors (each with one leaf locked) at the Erasmus West entrance.
  • There is not full internal circulation throughout the building on the ground floor.
    The Erasmus East entrance gives access to rooms ER.0.01 - ER.0.14, the East stairs and Erasmus East toilet with adaptations only.
    The Forensic Laboratory and Teaching Area entrance gives access to rooms ER.0.15 - ER.0.18 only.
    The Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance gives access to ER.0.19 - ER.0.28 only.
    The Erasmus West entrance gives access to rooms ER.0.29 - ER.0.45, the West stairs and Erasmus West toilet with adaptations only. Access to room ER.0.10 (Graduate College Creative Space) is also possible from this entrance, but the room cannot be used as a circulation route.
    It is also possible to access rooms ER.0.19 - ER.0.28 from the Erasmus West entrance, but this is via a stepped level change only, and visitors to this part of the building must first report to the Office of the Vice Chancellor reception, with this route being for staff only.
    There is, however, a main circulation corridor running through the first and second floors of the building, linking the East and West stairs at these levels.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access (via steep ramps) throughout the ground floor.
    There is step-free level access throughout the first and second floors; however there is no lift, and these floors are accessed via stairs only.
  • On the ground floor, there is a steep ramp down to access rooms ER.0.08 and ER.0.09 from the Erasmus East entrance. This ramp has a partial handrail on the right going down.
    There is then a steep ramp leading from the bottom of the above ramp up to rooms ER.0.06 and ER.0.07, with a handrail on the right going up.
    There are 3 steps, 15cm high and with a handrail on the right going down, bypassed by a steep ramp with a handrail on the left going down, leading down to rooms ER.0.33 - ER.0.43 from the Erasmus West entrance.
    There are 3 steps, 16cm high and with a central handrail as well as handrails on both sides, leading down to rooms ER.0.19 - ER.0.28 from the Erasmus West entrance. These steps can be bypassed by entering the building via the Office of the Vice Chancellor entrance.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes consist of low pile carpet and shiny vinyl.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Overhead and wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual and automatic doors along circulation routes throughout the building, as well as to access stairwells.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located to the left, then to the right and right again through the door into the Postgraduate PC Study Area as you enter the building through the Erasmus East entrance; straight ahead as you enter the building through the Erasmus West entrance, down the ramp leading to rooms ER.0.33 - ER.0.43, and at the far end of the corridor on the left; and to the right as you pass through the second set of doors at the entrance (Office of the Vice Chancellor).
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, to the left and then to the right as you enter the building through the Erasmus East entrance.
    • The shared step-free toilet facilities are located to the right as you pass through the second set of doors at the entrance (Office of the Vice Chancellor).
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the first floor, off the main corridor.

Entrance (Erasmus East)

  • This entrance is located to the east of the building, opposite Newton.
  • The approach to the entrance has bollards.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 131cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.

Stairs (East)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the left and then to the right as you enter the building through the Erasmus East entrance.
  • There is a permanently held open door to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor, first floor and second floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 16 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.

Toilet with Adaptations (ER.0.12 - Erasmus East - Left Hand Transfer)

  • Location and Access View
    • The toilet surveyed is located to the left, then to the right and right again through the door into the Postgraduate PC Study Area as you enter the building through the Erasmus East entrance.
    • The distance from the Erasmus East entrance is 22m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access, automatic doors, manual doors and doors permanently held open.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is written text, Braille, tactile, pictorial and numbered signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards automatically and has a low visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 76cm.
    • The door has a push pad lock.
    • Internally the door has a low visual contrast.
    • There is a grab rail on the internal door with a low visual contrast.
  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 138cm (width) x 196cm (depth) and there is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).

Entrance (Erasmus West)

  • This entrance is located to the west of the building, diagonally opposite Powell.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • There is a push pad at a height of 84cm.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 83cm.
  • There is a second set of double automatic doors, however one door is locked.
  • The second set of doors open towards you.
  • The push pad for the automatic doors is at a height of 90cm.
  • The width of the opening is 80cm.
  • The second set of doors have a medium visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 90cm.

Stairs (West)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the west of the building, immediately to the right as you pass through the second set of doors at the Erasmus West entrance.
  • There is a permanently held open door to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor, first floor and second floor can be accessed by these stairs.

    • The toilet surveyed is located straight ahead as you enter the building through the Erasmus West entrance, down the ramp leading to rooms ER.0.33 - ER.0.43, and at the far end of the corridor on the left.
    • The distance from the Erasmus West entrance (second set of doors) is 28m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has a steep ramp or slope, automatic doors and narrow walkways.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is numbered, Braille, pictorial, written text and tactile signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a high visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 84cm.
    • The door has a locking handle.
    • Internally the door has a high visual contrast.

  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 107cm.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 108cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 95cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 87cm.
  • There is a second set of double automatic doors, however one door is locked.
  • The second set of doors open towards you.
  • The push pad for the automatic doors is at a height of 87cm.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The second set of doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 95cm.

Reception (Office of the Vice Chancellor)

  • The reception is located to the left between the first and second sets of doors at the entrance to the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
  • The distance from the entrance (Office of the Vice Chancellor - first set of doors) is 2m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 71cm.
  • The reception has glazed screens.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is a small fold-down table for wheelchair users at the reception window at a height of 87cm, but it was obstructed by a large plant pot when surveyed (April 2025).
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring consists of deep pile carpet.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests and benches.
  • Some chairs are fixed.

Toilet with Adaptations (ER.0.26 - Office of the Vice Chancellor - No Transfer Space)

  • Location and Access View
    • The toilet surveyed is located to the right as you pass through the second set of doors at the entrance (Office of the Vice Chancellor).
    • The distance from the entrance (Office of the Vice Chancellor - second set of doors) is 6m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is numbered signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a medium visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 86cm.

  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a steep gradient.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with no handrails.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a second single manual door.
  • The second door is permanently held open.
  • The width of the opening is 73cm.
  • The second door has a medium visual contrast.
  • There is step-free access via ramp as you enter.
  • The ramp has a steep gradient.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with no handrails.
  • The ramp described above is located between the first and second sets of doors.
    Room ER.0.15 (Animation Laboratory) is located immediately to the right as you enter through the first set of doors, before the internal ramp and second set of doors.
