Trail of the Kings

  • The Trail of the Kings is a path which follows a semi-circular route between the two access points.
  • There are arrows along the path suggesting a direction of travel from the access point close to Wilds Woods to the access point in Chessington Zoo.
  • However, the trail can be accessed and followed in either direction.
  • The trail is approximately 250 metres in length.
  • The path mostly has a tarmac surface with some small sections of block paving.
  • It can be slightly uneven in places.
  • The path is step-free but there are some slight and steep slopes along the route.
  • The narrowest section of the path is 106cm but generally it is wider than 150cm and will allow 2 wheelchair users to pass.
  • There are no seats along the route.
  • The path passes through 2 covered areas past the gorilla and bush dog enclosures.
  • It is quite dark in these areas.
  • All other enclosures have outside viewing screens along the path.
  • All enclosures have an information board.
  • There are some animal sound effects played through speakers in some sections.
  • There is a television screen at the gorilla enclosure.
  • There are hand sanitisers at either end of the gorilla enclosure.
  • The height of the hand sanitisers is 118cm and 128cm.

General Enclosures

  • The types of animal enclosures in this area are indoor enclosures and outdoor enclosures.
  • The enclosures with step-free access include: the Binturong, Red Fox, Serval, Caracal, Asiatic Lion, Ring Tailed Coati, Bush Dog and Gorilla enclosures.
  • The enclosures with steep ramped/sloped access include: the Binturong, Red Fox, Serval, Caracal, Asiatic Lion, Ring Tailed Coati, Bush Dog and Gorilla enclosures (as the trail path has some steep sections).

  • The enclosures with floor level viewing areas include: the Binturong, Red Fox, Serval, Caracal, Asiatic Lion, Ring Tailed Coati, Bush Dog and Gorilla enclosures.
  • All enclosures have a floor level viewing area.

Animal Enclosures (Gorillas)

  • This enclosure is indoor.
  • Entrance / Opening View
    • There are no doors, however there is an open width of 75cm+ for access to this enclosure.
    • The entrance/opening is not clearly signed.
    • The entrance/opening does not/do not contrast visually with its immediate surroundings.
    • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance/opening.
    • There is ramped/sloped access at this entrance/opening.
    • There is a slight slope over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • Animal Enclosure View
    • There is not level access throughout this area.
    • There is stepped access to one of the viewing windows.
      There is 1 or 3 steps to access this area depending which side you access it from.
      The steps are clearly marked but do not have handrails.
    • Clear directional signage is provided in this area.
    • During busy periods this area can become congested.
    • The flooring in the enclosure is hard flooring.
    • Handrails with a rounded or oval profile are not provided in this area.
    • This area does play background music/sound.
    • There are not resting/seating areas within this area.
    • Information in this area includes the following formats: information board and television/screen.
    • There was not a staff member in the enclosure at the time of the survey.
    • There is a low level viewing area at 31cm high.
    • A one-way system operates in this area.
    • Visitors cannot handle/touch animals in this area.
    • The lighting levels in this area are low to moderate.
