Introduction

  • The following information describes the route for Coventry University Multi-storey Car Park to Portal House.
  • The approximate distance of this route is 0.7 miles.
  • The route will take approximately 15 minutes.
  • The route leads along Gosford Street, Jordan Well, Earl Street, Little Park Street and New Union Street.
  • The majority of the streets along this route are block paved.
  • Potential hazards along this route include busy pavement, crossings without markings, uneven surfaces and car park entrances.

Multi-Storey Car Park to Gosford Street

  • As you exit the Multi-Storey Car Park there is a crossing over the exit road to the car park.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs without tactile parking.
  • Traffic here will come from the left (as shown in photographs 1, 2, 3 and 4).
  • Once over this crossing you will need to cross over the service road for the Frederick Lanchester Building and William Morris Building.
  • This crossing has dropped kerb.
  • The dropped kerbs do not have tactile paving.
  • Traffic can come from both directions (as shown in photographs 5 and 6).
  • Once across this road, turn right and follow the pavement for approximately 15m (as shown in photograph 7) and 8).
  • At the end of the pavement turn left to proceed along Gosford Street (as shown in photograph 9).

Gosford Street to Jordan Well

  • Proceed ahead along Gosford Street.
  • The street here is block paved.
  • There is a long slight gradient upwards along this section.
  • After approximately 45m you will come to an opening on your left which is for the William Morris Building, Frederick Lanchester Building, the Engineering and Computer Building and the Student Centre (as shown in photograph 6).
  • On your right at this point is the Jaguar Building (as shown in photograph 8).
  • Continue ahead and proceed under the ring road.
  • After approximately 20m you will come to a bus stop on your right and a public car park on your left, proceed ahead (as shown in photographs 11 and 12).
  • Once you are under the ring road you will come to the entrance for the public car park after approximately 8m (as shown in photograph 14).
  • The crossing for the car park entrance is level.
  • Traffic could come from both directions.
  • Proceed ahead and passed the Oak Inn on your left after approximately 15m (as shown in photograph 17)
  • Here there is another car park entrance.
  • This crossing is level and traffic could come from both directions.
  • Continue ahead to the junction with Whitefriars Street.
  • The crossing here is level (as shown in photograph 20).
  • There are no road markings at this junction.
  • Traffic could come from both directions.
  • Once over the junction proceed ahead along Jordan Well.

Jordan Well to Earl Street

  • Proceed ahead along Jordan Well.
  • There is long, continuous, slight slope upwards along this section.
  • The flooring along this section is mainly block paving.
  • After approximately 15m you will pass the Ellen Terry Building on your left (as shown in photograph 4).
  • Continue along Jordan Well for another 15m and you will then pass the Richard Crossman Building on your left (as shown in photograph 5).
  • At this point there is a zebra crossing on your right which leads to the Hub.
  • You do not need to use this crossing.
  • Continue straight ahead along Jordan Well.
  • After approximately 30m you will come to the junction with Much Park Street.
  • This crossing is level.
  • There is tactile paving at this crossing.
  • There are no road markings at this crossing.
  • Traffic could come from both directions (as shown in photographs 9 and 10).
  • Once over this crossing continue straight ahead.

Earl Street to Little Park Street

  • Proceed along Earl Street.
  • The flooring along this section is block paving.
  • The block paving is uneven in places (as shown in photograph 2).
  • There is a further long slight slope upwards along this section.
  • There is an open section of pavement or a covered walkway.
  • The open section of pavement narrows further along so this section is based on using the covered walkway.
  • There are some shop signs in the covered walkway which could cause an obstacle (as shown in photographs 3 and 4).
  • Although the pavement is narrowed by these signs it remains wider that 150cm.
  • After approximately 25m the path narrows due a wall on your right (as shown in photograph 6).
  • The path remains wider than 150cm.
  • Continue ahead.
  • After a further 30m there is a steep slope on the pavement (as shown in photographs 8 and 9).
  • Once passed this steep slope continue ahead and up a further slight slope and you will come to an opening.
  • On your right you will see the Council House (as shown in photograph 13).
  • Turn to your left and proceed along Little Park Street.

Little Park Street to Junction with New Union Street Junction

  • Once on Little Park Street, there is some bench seating on both your left and right (as shown in photograph 2).
  • Follow Little Park Street.
  • The flooring along this section is block paving.
  • You will come to a slight gradient downwards after approximately 10m.
  • Here the path forks.
  • Follow the right hand fork and continue along Little Park Street (as shown in photograph 4).
  • There is a zebra crossing on your right.
  • Continue straight ahead.
  • After approximately 40m you will come to the junction with St John Street (as shown in photograph 11).
  • The junction is level.
  • The junction has tactile paving.
  • There are no road marking on this junction.
  • Traffic could come from both directions.
  • Once over the junction procced along Little Park Street.
  • You will come to a private car park entrance on your left (as shown in photograph 14).
  • Although there are no dropped kerbs for the car park entrance crossing the ground here is very uneven (as shown in photograph 15).
  • You are now at the junction of Little Park Street and New Union Street.

Junction of Little Park Street and New Union Street

  • On your right you will see a zebra crossing.
  • This crossing is level.
  • The zebra crossing also has tactile paving.
  • The zebra crossing has an island in the middle.
  • The first section of the crossing has traffic coming from the right.
  • Once over the first section of the zebra crossing, traffic will be coming from the left.
  • Once you have crossed Little Park street, turn left and follow the path around onto New Union Street.
  • There are some low tree branches here.
  • As you follow the path around, the path is uneven in places and there are also drainage channels in the path which cause slopes and lips in the pavement.
  • Once onto New Union Street you will see a zebra crossing after approximately 15m.
  • This zebra crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • There is an island on this zebra crossing.
  • Traffic will first come from the right.
  • Once you have reached the island traffic will then come from the left.
  • Once over this crossing turn right and proceed along New Union Street.

New Union Street to Portal House

  • Proceeding along New Union Street you will come to a junction with Friars Road after approximately 5m.
  • This junction has dropped kerbs with tactile paving.
  • This junction has in island.
  • Traffic will first come from the right.
  • Once on the island the traffic will then come from the left.
  • Once over Friars Road turn to the right to come back onto New Union Street.
  • Continue along New Union Street.
  • There is an open section of pavement or a covered section of pavement.
  • This route follows the covered section if pavement due to potential hazards in the open section which include signage, lampposts and delivery vehicles parked on the open section of pavement.
  • The flooring in the section is block paved.
  • The flooring is uneven in places.
  • After approximately 10m you will come to a slight slope caused by a ramped entrance into a shop.
  • Continue along New Union Street.
  • After a further 25m you will come to a news stand.
  • The displays outside the news stand reduce the access width to 130cm.
  • Continue straight ahead and you will come to some benches and a bus stop on your right. Proceed straight ahead.
  • After approximately 20m you will come to Portal House on your left.
