Durham Market Square

  • The Market Square is a square with a block paved surface.
  • The square has a constant uphill slight gradient.
  • There are Statues of Neptune, Charles William Vane Stewart 3rd Marquis of Londonderry as well as a memorial to men of the Durham Light Infantry in the square.
  • There is bench seating throughout the square.
  • There are three medium steps which are not clearly marked and have no handrails either side of the statue of Charles William Vane Stewart 3rd Marquis of Londonderry.
  • The market place bus stop is located off the square.
  • There is a map of the Durham Peninsula located here.
  • There is a defibrillator with a key code to access in the square. The key code reader is at a height of 158cm.
  • Off the square is the Market Hall, Town Hall and St Nicholas Church.

Market Square to Elvet Bridge via Sadler Street

  • Leave Market Square and head South East towards Elvet Bridge, a distance of approximately 50m.
  • Head out of the Square and into Sadler Street. There is a slight slope as you do so, the surface of which is Block Paving.
  • At the earliest opportunity cross to the pavement on the left hand side.
  • The surface of the road is level with the pavement and is block paved.
  • Roads in the Peninsula are not very busy with vehicles.
  • There are bollards as you proceed with a minimum width of 140cm.
  • As you continue take your first left down onto Elvet Bridge.

Elvet Bridge to New Elvet

  • Turn left and cross the Elvet Bridge to reach New Elvet a distance of approximately 200m.
  • There is a block paved surface for the pavement with no kerb between the pavement and the cobbled road.
  • The width of the pavement may be restricted by shop signage which may make it necessary to go into the road to avoid. (Photograph 2)
  • Continue along Elvet Bridge until you reach the bridge. (Photograph 4)
  • When possible cross the to the other side of the bridge.
  • The surface along the road in the middle of the bridge is cobbled.
  • Upon reaching Elvet Bridge the slope gradient changes from steep to slight going downhill.
  • After crossing the bridge there is a section of brick block paving. (Photograph 12)
  • After this continue on until you reach New Elvet.

New Elvet to Church Street

  • Turn right and head up New Elvet (photograph 1) and continue until you reach church street a distance of approximately 300m.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving.
  • After a few metres the is a small service road for the New Moon Inn. There is very worn tactile block paving on either side. (Photograph 4)
  • As you continue along the block paved pavement there is a slight slope heading towards the road and uphill.
  • Just beyond the service road there is a bus stop with tactile block. (photograph 5)
  • After approximately 50m you will come to a service road heading down to the River Wear.
  • Turn right on reaching this road to access the drop kerb. There is a width of 100cm along the pavement as you do so. (photograph 8)
  • There is tactile paving on either side of the tarmac road. (photographs 9 and 10)
  • Upon reaching the other side of the road there is a slight downhill slope followed by uphill slopes. (Photograph 11 - 15)
  • You will pass the Three Tuns bus stop which serves route PR2 (photograph 12)
  • You will eventually come to tactile paving next to the pedestrian crossing (Photograph 16)
  • There is a slight slope along the pavement going down towards the road.
  • Thee gradient of the upwards slope becomes increasingly steep as you progress
  • As you proceed you will pass Riverside 1 and Riverside 2 on your right as you head along the hill (photographs 17 and 18)

  • Approximately 70m after passing Riverside 2 you will encounter the service road to the Dunelm Student Union Car Park. This service road has tactile paving on either side. (Photographs 21, 22 and 23).

  • Afterwards passing this building the slope of the hill becomes steep. (photographs 24 and 25)
  • As you proceed there is a strip of tactile paving along the road. (Photograph 26)
  • After which keep heading along the road until you reach Church Lane (Photographs 27 and 28).

Church Street to Anchorage Terrace

  • Continue into Church Street from New Elvet and head along the pavement until you reach Anchorage Terrace a distance of approximately 310m.
  • There is an uphill slope as you do so. This slope is slight with steep sections. (Photographs 1, 2, 3 and 4).
  • The pavement is block paved with tarmac sections
  • The minimum width of the pavement at this point is 125cm.
  • As approximately 70m the slope becomes noticeably less steep. (photograph 5).
  • Continue past Church Lane and Bus Stop. (photograph 6)
  • Head towards the left of the pavement and avoid the steps to the Riverside path and towards St Oswald’s Church. (Photographs 7 and 8)
  • There is a slight slope to the lower area of the pavement.
  • The lower area of the pavement has a width of 110cm to enter it and 150cm for much of its width. The presence of a lamp post also reduces the width to 107cm at one point.
  • Continue along as you proceed you will find tactile paving for a Zebra Crossing. (Photograph 15)
  • After heading past the tactile paving you are now in Anchorage Terrace. (Photograph 16).

Anchorage Terrace to South Road via Church Street Head

  • Continue along Anchorage Terrace until you reach South Road a distance of approximately 200m.
  • There are a few obstacles such as lamp posts and parked cars.
  • After approximately 65m you will reach the road leading to Anchorage Terrace Rear. (Photographs 5 and 6)
  • There is a tactile drop kerbs located on either side of this road.
  • Once you have crossed the road you will have reached Church Street Head.
  • After doing so continue along the block paved pavement.
  • There is a slight uphill gradient.
  • After approximately 90m there is a bus stop reducing the width of the pavement to 136cm (photograph 11).
  • As you approach South Road there are two strips of tactile paving, the second of which leads to a pedestrian crossing. (Photographs 16 - 17).
  • There is a tactile drop kerbs at the crossing as well as a central island with tactile drop kerbs.
  • The surface of the island is block paved.
  • The pedestrian crossing has controls at a height of 108cm.
  • Upon reaching the island turn left and cross over to South Road. There is a drop kerb located here.

South Road to the Drive

  • Turn right and head up South Road and keep going until you reach the Drive a distance of approximately 140m.
  • The surface of the pavement is tarmac.
  • The pavement has a sight uphill gradient.
  • As you proceed there is signage ahead consisting of two posts the width between them is 160cm. (Photograph 4)
  • After this the width of the path is reduced to approximately 135cm. (Photograph 6)
  • The drive has tactile drop kerbs on either side of the brick block paved road.
  • The drive leads into the Lower Mountjoy Site. To your left at this point is Geography West.

South Road Drive to South Road Grey College Access

  • Continue along South Road for approximately 190m.
  • There is tactile paving for a pedestrian crossing after approximately 15m which can be seen in photograph 1.
  • There is a slight uphill slope along the road ahead of you.
  • You will pass to your left the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics - East and Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics - West.
  • To your right on the other side of the road you will pass the Teaching and Learning Centre.

  • There are barriers along the path (photograph 4) which reduce the width of the path to 130cm.
  • There is tactile paving on either side of the road and there is a slight slope uphill afterwards.
  • Eventually you will come to an entrance road into Grey College. This has tactile drop kerbs on either side which you will need to cross and can be seen in photographs 10 - 12.

South Road Grey College Access Route to Hollingside Lane Crossing

  • Hollingside Lane is located approximately 240m further up South Road.
  • There is an uphill gradient along the pavement.
  • The pavement is tarmac.
  • There is a bus stop along the route.
  • On approaching Hollingside Lane there is a section of tactile pavement.
  • The roads to your left at this juncture lead either to Grey College or Collingwood College.
  • Across the road to your right there is access to St Oswald, St Aidan St Mary's and Trevelyan Colleges.

South Road Hollingside Lane Crossing to Botanical Garden Entrance

  • There is a pedestrian crossing with tactile drop kerbs on either side.
  • The height of the controls is 108cm. (The pedestrian crossing is visible in photographs 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  • There is a slight downhill gradient along the route
  • There is a sign which reduces the pavement width to 135cm and can be seen in photograph 12.
  • After approximately 200m there is an unnamed road located next to the entrance to Botanical Garden. On approach to which is a section of tactile paving. (Photograph 14).

South Road Botanical Gardens Entrance to Howlands

  • Turn left and continue down the unnamed road for approximately 200m until you reach the entrance to the Howlands area.
  • There is a tarmac surface to the pavement as you proceed.
  • There is a slight slope leading downhill which as you proceed will change into a slight uphill gradient.
  • After approximately 175m you will reach the pavement going around a roundabout (photograph 6). Here the surface of the pavement is block paving.
  • As you head to the edge of the roundabout, there is a drop kerb for a gravel road to your left.
  • As you proceed you will see a steep slope to the left with bollards obstructing access and tactile block paving at the bottom. (photographs 9 and 10)
  • The bollards have a width of 145cm between them.
  • The paving is brick block paving.
  • The slope is steep and can be seen in photographs 11 and 12.
  • Upon reaching the top of the slope you will have reached Howlands. (photograph 13).
