Durham Market Square

  • The Market Square is a square with a block paved surface.

Durham Market Square to New Elvet Bridge via Leazes Road

  • Leave Durham Market Square by going North East and head along Leazes Road for approximately 200m.
  • The surface across the road is block paved and level with the square with tactile block paving on either side.
  • There are bollards on the other side of the road with a width of 230cm. This can be seen in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Turn left, there is a very slight slope leading to Leazes Road which can be seen in photograph 3 and 4.
  • As you turn right and head along Leazes Road, there is a section of tactile block paving for the zebra crossing which can be seen in photographs 5 and 6.
  • As you head along the road there is a steep slope leading down the road.
  • This can be seen in photographs 7-11.
  • After approximately 125m you will reach the Prince Bishop's car park as shown in photograph 12.
  • The road into the car park has tactile drop kerbs on either side of the road and there is a tactile island in the centre of the road. This can be seen in photograph 13 - 16.
  • After crossing the road there is a steep slope as seen in photograph 17.
  • Turn right and continue along Leazes Road. Due to signposts the width is limited to 174cm at one point. Photographs 18, 19 and 20.
  • There is then a tarmac service road with drop kerbs on either side as seen in photographs 21, 22 and 23.
  • After which continue along the road until you reach New Elvet Bridge 24, 25 and 26.

New Elvet Bridge to Pelaw Leazes Lane via Leazes Road

  • Head along Leazes Road until you reach Pelaw Leazes Lane.
  • To continue along Leazes Lane there is a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights across the road which leads to New Elvet Bridge.
  • There are tactile drop kerbs on either side of the tarmac road.
  • There are two central islands the first of which is level with the road and the second of which has tactile drop kerbs on either side.
  • The controls for the lights are at a height of 104cm.
  • The crossing can be seen in photographs 1- 5.
  • After crossing the road continue along Leazes Road. Due to the location of the traffic lights there is a gap with a width of 140cm as seen in photograph 6.
  • As you continue onwards along Leazes road there is a bench as shown in photograph 7.
  • There is also a steep downwards slope which leads to an underpass which can be used cross Leazes Road. This downward slope can be seen in photographs 8 and 9.
  • At the bottom of the slope there is a steep upwards slope which can be seen in photographs 10, 11, 12 and 13.
  • Keep going along Leazes at the top of the slope there are several signposts that restrict the width of the pavement but never to less than 145cm. As you proceed there is a slight uphill gradient. This can be seen in photographs 14 - 20.

Pelaw Leazes Lane to St Hild's Lane via Leazes Road

  • Cross Pelaw Leazes Lane and continue for approximately 330m until you reach St Hild's Lane.
  • There are drop kerbs on either side of the tarmac road which can be seen in photographs 1 - 4.
  • There is a slight slope along the road as you continue.
  • The width of the tarmac pavement is 130cm.
  • This stretch of pavement continues until you reach the School of Education service road and can be seen in photographs 5 - 9.
  • The School of Education service road has drop kerbs on either side off the tarmac road and can be seen in photographs 10 - 13.
  • After crossing the road continue uphill for approximately 190m until you reach St Hild's Lane.
  • The is a slight uphill gradient as you proceed to St Hild's Lane.

St Hild's Lane to St Hild and St Bede

  • Turn right and head down St Hild's Lane.
  • There is a tactile drop kerb down onto St Hild's Lane which can be seen in photograph 1.
  • There is no pavement along St Hild's Lane which has a steep downhill slope which can be seen in photographs 2 - 6.
