Summary

  • The route is from Durham Market Square to St Cuthbert's Reception a distance of approximately 750m.
  • This route take you past the venues along North Bailey including Hatfield College as well as the St John's and St Chad's receptions.
  • Along the route there is the St Chad's Reception approximately 420m from the market square and the St John's Reception approximately 580m from the market square.
  • The route mainly consists of block paved pavement, however it also includes both tarmac and cobbled roads.
  • The peninsula has little in the way of vehicular traffic but has a lot of pedestrian traffic.
  • The route has a mixture of slight and steep slopes throughout its length.

Durham Market Square

  • The Market Square is a square with a block paved surface.
  • The square has a constant uphill slight gradient.
  • There are Statues of Neptune, Charles William Vane Stewart 3rd Marquis of Londonderry as well as a memorial to men of the Durham Light Infantry in the square.
  • There is bench seating throughout the square.
  • There are three medium steps which are not clearly marked and have no handrails either side of the statue of Charles William Vane Stewart 3rd Marquis of Londonderry.
  • The market place bus stop is located off the square.
  • There is a map of the Durham Peninsula located here.
  • There is a defibrillator with a key code to access in the square. The key code reader is at a height of 158cm.
  • Off the square is the Market Hall, Town Hall and St Nicholas Church.

Market Square to Owengate via Saddlers Street

  • Head towards Sadlers Street and continue along it until you reach Owengate for a distance of approximately 180m.
  • The road is level with the pavement on either side and has a brick block paved surface.
  • The surface of the pavement is block paving.
  • There is a slight uphill gradient along the pavement.
  • There are bollards along the path with widths between 84cm and 120cm. (Photographs 2 and 3)
  • Advertisements can obstruct the route along the pavement.
  • There are level cobbled service roads and cobbled sections as you proceed (Photographs 4 and 5)
  • These are followed by more block paved pavement with a slight uphill gradient. This pavement also has bollards but the overall width of the pavement is not less than 84cm
  • After approximately 120m the gradient of the slope becomes steep and continues to become increasingly steep as you progress towards Owengate (as seen in photographs 7 - 12).
  • There are bollards along the pavement at this point with width between 95cm – 110cm.
  • Parked cars and drain pipes may also restrict the width of the pavement.

Owengate to Dun Cow Lane via North Bailey

  • Cross Owengate and head up North Bailey until you reach Dun Cow Lane a distance of approximately 170m.
  • There are drop kerbs on either side of the Owengate crossing.
  • The road across Owengate is cobbled This can be seen in photographs 1, 2 and 3.
  • The surface of the pavement along North Bailey is uneven block paving.
  • The width of the pavement along North Bailey has a minimum of 115cm.
  • There is a slight slope uphill going uphill along much of North Bailey.
  • As you head along North Bailey you will pass on your right 50 North Bailey, 48 - 49 North Bailey, 43-46 North Bailey - Classic and Ancient History, The Assembly Rooms - 40 North Bailey and end up near to 38 -39 North Bailey.

  • As you proceed the width of the pavement is 120cm, which is restricted to only 107cm by the presence of drain pipes.

Dun Cow Lane Crossing Into North Bailey Crossing

  • Cross Dun Cow Lane and head down towards the left hand side of North Bailey until you reach the pavement.
  • The crossing of Dun Cow Lane is level with the pavement, however there is a very noticeable slope going down towards North Bailey as you cross Dun Cow Lane which can be seen in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Then head across North Bailey which can be seen in photographs 3, 4 and 5.
  • As you proceed there are bollards on the pavement which restrict the width of the pavement to 86cm (photographs 6 and 7).
  • As you continue you will pass St Chad’s Reception which is located to your left.

North Bailey to St John's Reception

  • Cross North Bailey and continue along it until you reach St John's Reception a distance of approximately 120m
  • Cross the tarmac road there is no drop kerb either side. This can be seen in photographs 1 and 2.
  • There was construction work blocking the pavement on the left hand side of the road at time of the survey (June 2021) as shown in photograph 3.
  • Continue along the pavement North Bailey. There is a noticeable slight slope as you proceed.
  • The width of the pavement is reduced to 90cm by bollards and to 77cm by the presence of bins. Photographs 4, 5 and 6.
  • At this point as you proceed the road you are on changes from North Bailey to South Bailey.
  • There are some areas of the road that have cobbled areas as shown in photograph 7.
  • Proceed onwards there is a cobbled road and drop kerb as shown in photograph 8.
  • Beyond which the pavement width shrinks to a width of approximately 76cm which can be seen in photographs 9 and 10.
  • To your left will be the entrance to St John's College Reception which can be seen in photograph 11.

St John's College Reception to St Cuthbert's Society Reception

  • Proceed along South Bailey until you reach St Cuthbert's Society Reception a distance of approximately 160m.
  • The pavement continues to be uneven block paved and there soon develops a slight downhill slope which has the occasional steep section something that last all the way to the St Cuthbert's Society Reception.
  • After St John's College Reception the width of the pavement increases to 120cm though this is reduced by drainpipes at some points to only 102cm as shown in photographs 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  • As you proceed there are cobbled service road along the pathway, (photographs 5, 6 and 8) and also limited in width by the presence of bins and other obstacles.
  • After approximately 160m, St Cuthbert’s Society Reception will be on the left.
