Introduction

  • The High Street is situated in St Peter Port Guernsey and is close to the main harbour for ferries to mainland UK and France.
  • The main airport is located to the south west of St Peter Port, approximately 3.5miles.
  • The nearest bus stop is at the Bus Station/Town Terminus, which is next to Castle Pier. This is approximately 300 metres from the High Street.
  • Taxis are available from the Town Taxi rank.
  • The High Street is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • The length of the route of the High Street is roughly 240 metres.

Parking

  • Blue Badge Parking (2*)
  • There are several Blue Badge parking bays in Church Square located by Mountain Warehouse and Healthspan.
  • Parking is free for Blue Badge holders displaying a valid Blue Badge.
  • Public Car Parks (1*)
  • There is a public car park on Albert Pier, approximately 160metres from the High Street and its southern entrance with Fountain Street.

High Street Overview

  • The High Street in St Peter Port Guernsey runs from Fountain Street (South) to Smith Street (North).
  • The route has various easy to steep slopes uphill and easy to steep slopes downhill throughout.
  • The High Street is divided up into sections along with junctions in between each section.
  • Section 0 - Fountain Street Pedestrian Crossing to Junction - Fountain Street and High Street.
  • Junction - Fountain Street and High Street.
  • Section 1- Fountain Street to High Street.
  • Junction - High Street.
  • High Street - Quay Street.
  • High Street - The Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
  • Junction - High Street and Quay Street.
  • Quay Street to Berthelot Street.
  • Junction Berthelot Street and High Street.
  • Berthelot Street to Lefebvre Street.
  • Junction - Lefebvre Street and High Street.
  • Lefebvre Street to Smith Street.
  • Smith Street/The Pollet and High Street.
  • The lighting along the High Street is mostly modern bright white lighting attached to the buildings on both sides.
  • There is no tactile paving at the dropped kerbs at the junctions.

Section 0 - Fountain Street Pedestrian Crossing to Junction - Fountain Street and High Street

  • The pedestrian crossing is the start of the route.
  • This crossing is on Fountain Street just before it meets Albert Pier and Town Terminus.
  • This crossing is a pedestrian crossing about 22 metres from the junction of the High Street and Fountain Street. This crossing has dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides. There is a push button at a height of 99cm for crossing.
  • The road has traffic in both directions and is very busy.
  • The pathways are 120cm in width and have a mixture of block paving and cobble paving.
  • The pathway on the other side of the crossing is block paving which is uneven in places. There is a steep uphill slope towards the junction for Fountain Street and the High Street.
  • Fountain Street is on a steep uphill slope leading from Albert Pier/Town Terminus and the junction with Comet Street.
  • The length of this section is roughly 28 metres.

Junction - Fountain Street and High Street

  • There are no pedestrian crossings to cross Fountain Street at the junction with the High Street.
  • The pathways are on a steep uphill slope as you reach the junction with the High Street with traffic coming from both directions along Fountain Street and towards you only when they are exiting out of the High Street.
  • There are no dropped kerbs to cross the High Street. The pathway is on a steep downhill slope as you reach the High Street.
  • The pathways are a mixture of uneven block paving and cobbles.
  • The width of the pathway is 120cm throughout.

Section 1 - Fountain Street to High Street

  • There is a pathway available on both sides of the road which is on a steep downhill slope.
  • The pathways are a mixture of block paving and cobbles.
  • The width of the pathways is 120cm throughout much of the section, but it narrows to 80cm on the left as you pass the building.
  • There is a set of stairs on the left pathway at the beginning of the section to reach HMV on the upper level. There are 13 deep steps with a handrail in the centre.
  • The pathway on the right passes a church entrance not long after the pathway begins, which narrows the pathway down to 80cm and requires a small side road to be crossed.
  • This side road doesn’t have dropped kerbs or tactile paving.
  • The pathway changes to a steep uphill slope as you approach Sports Direct to your left and this section ends.
  • The length of this section is roughly 26 metres.

Junction - High Street

  • There are no crossings available with dropped kerbs or tactile paving at this junction point.
  • The width of the pathways in this section are 120cm in width. The surface of the pathways is block paving and cobbles.
  • This area is only open to commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • The pathways are level and then become steep uphill slopes in all directions.

Section 2a - High Street - The Edinburgh Woollen Mill

  • This section of the High Street branches off to the left towards Pharmacy Locale, Commercial Arcade, HMV and Wolverton Place.
  • There is a pathway on the right only which is on a steep uphill slope.
  • The width of the pathway is 120cm and is uneven block paving and cobbles.
  • As you reach the top of the slope you will see Pharmacy Locale ahead, Edinburgh Woollen Mill to the left and Commercial Arcade to the right.
  • There is a slope or steps to reach HMV, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Wolverton Place.
  • The slope is steep and has handrails on both sides (shown in photographs 7, 8 and 9).
  • The steps are before the ramp, next to Pharmacy Locale. There are 10 deep steps with handrails on both sides and in the centre.
  • The length of this section is roughly 40 metres.

Section 2 - High Street to Quay Street

  • The pathways are on both sides of the road with traffic coming towards you only and limited to commercial vehicles and Blue Badge users only.
  • The pathways are on a steep uphill slope. The width of the path is 120cm, with it becoming narrower in places to 80cm as you pass building.
  • The surface of the pathways is concrete, block paving and cobbles.
  • There are Blue Badge parking bays next to Lifespan and opposite Mountain Warehouse (shown in photographs 11, 12 and 13).
  • The Blue Badge bays are clearly marked, measuring 320cm by 500cm.
  • There is a limited number of standard on-street parking bays opposite the Blue Badge bays. The standard bays measure 290cm by 490cm.
  • The length of this section is roughly 24 metres.

Junction - High Street and Quay Street

  • There are no pedestrian crossings at this junction point.
  • The width of the pathways in this area are 120cm, which drop down to 70cm in width on the right of the pathway after you have crossed the junction.
  • The surface of the pathways us block paving and cobbles.
  • This area is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • The pathways are on a steep uphill slope going over the junction towards the High Street.

Section 3 - Quay Street to Berthelot Street

  • The pathways are on both sides of the road.
  • This area is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • The pathways are on a steep uphill slope.
  • The surface of the pathways is concrete and block paving.
  • The pathway is narrow (75cm) on both sides to begin with.
  • Towards the end of this section the pathway on the right narrows to 45cm to pass a building (shown in photograph 9).
  • The pathway then widens back to 120cms for the remainder of this section.
  • The length of this section is roughly 26 metres.

Junction Berthelot Street and High Street

  • Berthelot Street is a small side road that enters the High Street on the left hand side pathway with a small crossing that has dropped kerbs without tactile paving (shown in photographs 1 and 2).
  • The right hand pathway continues ahead, without a dropped kerb to cross over to the road near Berthelot Street.

Section 4 - Berthelot Street to Lefebvre Street

  • The pathway is on both sides of the road, with traffic coming towards you.
  • This area is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge users holders only.
  • The pathways are on an easy uphill slope.
  • The surface of the pathways is concrete and block paving.
  • The width of the path at this section is 75cm as you pass building.
  • The path narrows to 45cm on the right hand pathway as you pass some buildings
  • The pathway then widens to 100cm for the remainder of this section.
  • The length of this section is roughly 22 metres.

Junction- Lefebvre Street and High Street

  • Lefebvre Street is a small side road that enters the High Street on the left hand pathway, with a small crossing that has dropped kerbs without tactile paving (shown in photographs 1, 2 and 3).
  • The right hand pathway continues ahead and has no dropped kerbs to cross over the to the Lefebvre Street turning.

Section 5 - Lefebvre Street to Smith Street

  • There is a path on both sides of the road.
  • This area is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • The surface of the pathways are a mixture of concrete and block paving and are on an easy uphill slope.
  • The width of the paths is 75cm.
  • The length of this section is roughly 22 metres.

Junction - Smith Street / The Pollet and High Street

  • You will come to the end of the High Street and the path on the left leads to Smith Street and the path on the right leads to The Pollet.
  • The surface of the pathways is concrete and block paving.
  • This area is for commercial vehicles and Blue Badge holders only.
  • Traffic will come both ways on Smith Street and come towards you on The Pollet.
  • There are no dropped kerbs at this junction.
  • This section marks the end of the route.
