- The following information describes the route from Waterloo Station to St Thomas’ Hospital.
- From the Waterloo Road exit of Waterloo Station the approximate distance of this route is 900 metres.
- The route takes approximately 9 minutes.
- From the Station Approach exit of Waterloo Station the approximate distance of this route is 600 metres.
- The route takes approximately 6 minutes.
- The route leads along Station Approach, along and across York Road to crossing Westminster Bridge Road and taking the access path to the St Thomas' Hospital main entrance.
- The final section describes the route leading through St Thomas' Hospital to the entrance of the Evelina London Children's Hospital.
- The majority of paths along the route are tarmac or flagstones with some slight, easy or moderate gradients in places.
- There is street signage located along the route directing you to the hospital.
- There are large maps located outside of the Waterloo Train Station indicating the location of St Thomas' hospital.
- There is public parking located on Station Approach and Leake Street.
- The potential hazards on this route include; busy roads, crossing points, congested pathways and uneven surfaces.
Waterloo Station
- There is step free access via lift, leading from the station platforms to the station concourse area.
- There are three separate exits from the station.
- Exit one consists of easy ramped access with handrails on either side. This utilises the entrance on Waterloo Road (shown in photographs 1 and 2).
- Exit two consists of stepped access from the station concourse to the station approach entrance of York Road (shown in photograph 4). If you use this exit please skip to section 10.
- Exit three consists of step free access and is used for taxis and for access to the station reception.
- Accessible toilets are available on the station concourse.
- There is step free access along the station concourse.
- Car parking facilities are available at the station.
Waterloo Station - Mepham Street
- Turn left on reaching Waterloo Road for approximately 85m.
- There are bollards which have a gap of 116cm between them.
- Beyond which is tactile paving for crossing the road.
- The surface of the pavement is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.
- There is a slight gradient towards the road.
- There is a small patch of brick block paving next to the road.
Crossing Mepham Street
- Cross Mepham Street.
- There are drop kerbs on either side.
- There is tactile paving on the far side.
- The surface of the road is tarmac.
- At the crossing traffic is coming from the left.
Waterloo Road - Mepham Street
- There is a patch of brick block paving immediately upon crossing the road for approximately 4m.
- The surface of the pavement is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.
- There are two strips of tactile paving either side of a pedestrian crossing across the road the crossing itself has a strip of blistered tactile paving.
Crossing Mepham Street
- Cross the bus lane from Mepham Street.
- There is a zebra crossing with tactile dropped kerbs on both sides.
- The surface of the road is tarmac.
- At the crossing traffic is coming from the left.
Waterloo Road - Railway Arch to Mepham Street
- The surface of the pavement is block paving with the occasional manhole cover.
- There are occasional strips of brick block paving
- There is a gentle uphill gradient
- Bus Stops J and K are located here, between them is a strip of tactile paving for a zebra crossing.
- Continue until you reach the end of Bus Stop K and turn left through the alleyway to reach the alternative exit from Waterloo Station.
Railway Arch - Mepham Street
- Turn left and head through the tunnel
- There are bollards at the entrance to the tunnel with a width of 124cm.
- Immediately beyond this is an easy slop downwards.
- The surface of the pavement is block paving.
- There is a gutter in the middle of the tunnel
- Beyond this is an easy slope upwards.
Crossing Mepham Street and Station Approach
- Cross Mepham Street.
- There is a zebra crossing across Mepham Street to Station Approach.
- The crossing point consists of two road crossings.
- At the first crossing traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing traffic is coming from your left.
- The first crossing is across one lane of traffic.
- The second crossing is across one lane of traffic.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both the near and far sides of the crossings.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving between the two crossings.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
- Between the two crossings there is a cycle path.
Station Approach - York Road
- The lift from Waterloo Subway station is located on Station Approach. On exiting the lift continue ahead along Station Approach.
- Approaching from Mepham Street and Station approach crossing, turn right.
- There is a pedestrian crossing immediately in front of you.
- There are no pedestrian crossing signals at this crossing point.
- The crossing point consists of two road crossings.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from your left.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
- The surface of each crossing point is smooth tarmac.
- After the crossing the surface changes to an uneven tarmac shingle finish.
- The walkway is an easy slope down to York Road.
- As you join York Road turn left and continue ahead.
York Road
- Continue ahead on York Road.
- Caution is advised due to heavy traffic.
- The surface of the walkway is predominantly flagstones which are uneven in places.
- There are areas of tactile paving and small glass squares.
- There are three canopied bus stops located on the right of the walkway before the crossing.
- There are posts at regular intervals on the right hand side of the walkway
- There are large pillars on the left hand side of the walk way.
- The pillars extend almost up to the crossing.
- After approximately 175m you will arrive at a pedestrian crossing on the right.
Crossing York Road
- The crossing point consists of two road crossings.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from your left.
- There are three lanes of traffic between each crossing point.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both near and far sides of the crossing.
- There are no dropped kerbs or tactile paving between the two crossings.
- Each crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
- The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
- The surface of the crossings is tarmac.
- Caution is advised when crossing due to heavy traffic.
- After crossing York Road turn left.
- The controls for the traffic lifts are at a height of 108cm on either side of York Road and 122cm on the central Island.
- The lights do have rotating cones.
York Road
- Continue ahead on York Road for approximately 150m.
- The surface of the walkway is flagstones which are uneven in places.
- As you approach Forum Magnum Square the surface becomes cobbled and is very uneven in places.
- The walkway is an easy slope upwards to Westminster Bridge Road.
- There is seating along this part of the pavement, one with armrests and one without.
- At the end of York Road turn right.
- The crossing is located on the left.
Westminster Bridge Road Crossing
- As you reach Westminster Bridge Road there is a pedestrian crossing immediately in front of you.
- This crossing point consists of two road crossings.
- At the first crossing traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing traffic is coming from your left.
- The first crossing is across three lanes of traffic.
- The second crossing is across two lanes of traffic.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both near and far sides of the crossing.
- There are dropped kerbs or tactile paving between the two crossings.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
- The crossings are operated by push button with a visual display located above the button indicating when to cross.
- The surface of the crossings is tarmac.
- Caution is advised when crossing due to heavy traffic.
- After completing the second crossing turn right.
Westminster Bridge Road - St Thomas' Hospital Main Entrance
- Continue on Westminster Bridge Road for approximately 50m.
- The surface of the walkway is flagstones which are uneven in places.
- The walkway is on a moderate upward slope.
- After the bollards the surface is uneven concrete on a moderate slope leading downwards.
- At the bottom of the slope turn right and then left
- Continue ahead towards the hospital main entrance.
- The route from Westminster Bridge Road to the hospital main entrance is approximately 80m.

- The entrance area/door is clearly signed.
- There is step free access at this entrance.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
- The entrance door(s) does not/do not contrast visually with its immediate surroundings.
- The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
- The door(s) is/are double width.
- The width of the door opening is 150cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.
- There is a second set of doors.
- The door(s) open(s) automatically.
- The door(s) is/are double width.
- The width of the door opening is 149cm.
St Thomas' Hospital Main Entrance - Evelina Children's Hospital Entrance
- On entering via the main entrance, turn left into the Lambeth Wing.
- Follow the corridor which bears to the right until you reach the entrance to the Emergency Floor.
- Follow this corridor past 4 sets of double doors.
- The entrance to the link bridge to Evelina Children's Hospital is on your left hand side.
- Follow the link bridge down a slight slope with handrails on both sides.
- The entrance to the Evelina Children's Hospital is directly ahead.
