Access Guide

Assistance and Accessibility

  • For details of special assistance at Stornoway Airport please click here (new tab).
  • There is a member of staff available for help and assistance.
  • There is no hearing assistance system.
  • There is seating available.
  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: wheelchairs and walking sticks. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance.
  • There is a quiet space or reflection space.
  • British Sign Language interpreters are not available.
  • The alternative formats documents can be provided in include; Braille on request, large print on request and different languages on request.
  • Water bowls for assistance dogs are available.
  • There is not a designated assistance dog spending area.
  • Airline staff will guide you through the procedures required with regards to mobility equipment and requirements with regards to motorised equipment.
    Please contact the airline prior to booking as the carriage of motorised mobility equipment is limited depending on the type of aircraft.
    The carriage of mobility equipment over 23 kilograms may also be subject to the approval of the airports concerned.
    The airport has a small number of bariatric wheelchairs available on request.
    An Aviramp, Ambulift and stair climber are available to assist passengers with access and egress to aircraft dependant on passenger needs and local conditions.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • There are 2 toilets with adaptations.
  • Toilets with adaptations are located in the main concourse and in the Departures Lounge.
  • All toilets with adaptations have a right hand transfer space.
  • Step-free male and female standard toilet facilities are located in the main concourse and in the Departures Lounge.
  • Parent and baby changing facilities are located in the Main Concourse, and in the toilet with adaptations in the Departure Lounge.

Arrivals Gate

  • The route from the aircraft across the apron to the Arrivals Gate is level tarmac and concrete. Disembarkation of the aircraft may be by airstair and/or steps, or via mobile ramp (Aviramp). The choice will depend on individual needs, aircraft type and weather and wind conditions.
    Wheelchair users may transfer to an aisle chair or stair climber (type may vary) for assisted egress from the aircraft.
    At the time of survey the large Ambulift was out of use (November 2025). A small trailer lift may be used instead.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy slope at the entrance.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 88cm.
  • There is an oversized threshold at the opening.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a second set of manual doors (with one door locked) which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 78cm.
  • The second doors have a high visual contrast.
  • A member of staff is available to open the locked doors as required.

Trailer Ambulift

  • The clear door width of the platform lift used to access the Ambulift is 71cm.
  • The dimensions of the platform lift used to access the Ambulift are 112cm x 248cm.
  • There are separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
  • At the time of survey the main truck Ambulift was out of action. At the time of survey (November 2025) it was not known when this may come back into service.

Baggage Claim

  • There are 1 baggage carousels.
  • Some flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels are varied.
  • There are not information screens showing carousel flight assignment.
  • There is a member of staff available to assist with retrieving baggage from the carousels.

Main Concourse

  • There is step-free level access in this area.
  • Clear directional signage is provided in this area.
  • Dementia friendly signage is not provided.
  • Departures and arrivals information boards are available.
  • All of the directional display screens can be used to provide disruption related information.
  • There are audible announcements for flight information in this area.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Some flooring is shiny and patterned.
  • There is a high visual contrast between the walls and floor.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Main Concourse Seating Area

  • The seating area is located in the Main Concourse.
  • There is step-free level access in this area.
  • There is not designated seating available for people who require assistance.
  • There is some space for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • There are a mixture of chairs with and without armrests, coffee tables and fixed tables available in this area.
  • There are some tables suitable for wheelchair users (between 70cm - 80cm and free from obstruction) .
  • Some flooring is shiny.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Lighting levels are bright.

Information Desk

  • The counter is located opposite the main entrance/exit.
  • The counter is approximately 10m from the main entrance/exit.
  • The counter is clearly visible from the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 105cm.
  • The lowered section of the counter is at a height of 73cm.
  • There is not a clear knee recess beneath the lowered section of the counter.
  • The counter has patterned backgrounds which may affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • There is sufficient space to write or sign documents on the counter.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise.

Business Facility

  • All tables are suitable for wheelchair users (between 70cm - 80cm and free from obstruction) .

  • There is not a hearing assistance system.

  • Lighting levels are bright.

Cafe

  • Location and Access View
    • The cafe is located in the main concourse, to the right as you enter.
    • The most accessible route has step-free level access.
    • There is step-free level access into this area.
  • Service View
    • This area has a counter where food and drink can be ordered and staff who can provide assistance with ordering.
    • Full table service is available on request only.
    • Menus are displayed on the counter.
    • The following dietary requirements can be catered for: gluten free, dairy free, lactose free, vegetarian and vegan.
    • The following are available: drinking straws, takeaway cups and takeaway cutlery.
    • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Order and Payment View
    • The payment counter was surveyed.
    • There is step-free level access to the counter.
    • The height of the counter is 89cm.
    • There is not a lowered section at the counter.
    • The height of the tray rail is 85cm.
  • Seating Area View
    • There is step-free level access throughout the seating area.
    • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is space for an assistance dog to rest.
    • Some flooring is shiny.
    • The walls and floor visual contrast varies between low and high.
    • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests.
    • Furniture available in this area includes: tables.
    • The surface height of the tables is suitable for wheelchair users.
    • The clear height under the tables is suitable for wheelchair users.
    • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
    • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.

Parent and Baby Room / Quiet Room

  • There is step-free level access into the room.

  • The baby change facility when in use is at a height of 100cm from the floor.

Toilet with Adaptations (Main Concourse - Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located in the main concourse to the right of the cafe.
  • This toilet is approximately 15m from the main entrance/exit.
  • Access View
    • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
    • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
    • The door to enter opens outwards and has a high visual contrast with the surrounding walls.
    • The width of the toilet door opening is 87cm.

  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 154cm x 263cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.

Car Rental Desks

  • The car rental desks are located in the main concourse next to the main entrance/exit.
  • There is clear signage to the car rental desks.
  • There is step-free level access to the car rental desks.
  • The height of the car rental desks is 115cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the car rental desks.
  • The lowered section of the car rental desks is at a height of 76cm.
  • There is not a clear knee recess beneath the lowered sections of the car rental desks.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system at the car rental desks.
  • There is a member of staff available to assist with bags at the car rental desk.

Exit

  • This exit is located at the rear of the main concourse.
  • There are no help points available.
  • There is step-free level access at the exit.
  • There are double automatic doors which open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 175cm.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There are single manual doors to either side of the automatic doors which some may have difficulty opening.
  • There is a second automatic door which opens by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 107cm.
  • There is an oversized threshold at the opening.
  • The second door has a low visual contrast.
  • There are two similar doors opposite each other to either side of the entrance foyer. During inclement weather one of these may be closed.
  • There is step-free access via a slope after you exit.
  • Both exit doors have a steep slope.

Parking, Drop off and Pick Up

  • The car park is located in front of the terminal.
  • This is an open air car park with a tarmac surface.
  • The car park has a ticket, a push button and an intercom barrier control system.
  • There are more than 10 designated Blue Badge parking bays available.
  • Blue Badge parking is clearly marked and signposted.
  • The Blue Badge parking bay dimensions are 230cm x 480cm.
  • There is a marked zone on both sides but not to the rear.
  • There are no help points available.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • Paying and Booking View
    • Parking is free for Blue Badge holders.
    • Parking is free for pick up and drop off.
    • Free pick-up and drop-off is limited to 120 minutes.
    • Clearly presented payment terms signs are provided.
    • Payment signs are located at the entrance to the car park, at the payment machines in the car park and at the payment machines in the building.
    • Payment machines are located opposite the terminal building main entrance in the car park and there is another in the entry/exit foyer of the terminal building.
    • There is a payment machine at a convenient height for wheelchair users.
    • There is a level turning space (minimum 185cm x 210cm) in front of the payment machine(s).

  • Getting to the Terminal View
    • The most accessible route from the Blue Badge parking to the terminal building has step-free level access, steep slopes/ramps, dropped kerbs with tactile paving, dropped kerbs without tactile paving and bollards.
    • There is a pedestrian crossing between the car park and the terminal.
  • Exiting the Car Park by Car View
    • The car park has a ticket, a push button and an intercom barrier control system at the exit.
