    • There is step-free access via ramp at the most accessible entrance.
    • There are 3 entrances into the building.
      The entrance on South Wharf road is step-free via a steep slope and gives access to the ground floor of the building.
      Entrance A on Winsland Street is step-free via a steep slope and gives access to the ground floor of the building.
      Entrance B on Winsland Street is step-free level with manual doors and gives access to Lift 20 and the stairwell on the lower ground floor of the building.
    • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of areas, this may include the use of a lift.
    • The following areas have step-free access via ramps or slopes: there are steep ramps with handrails on both sides along all corridors on the ground floor of the building and from the ground floor to the lower ground floor.
      There is also a steep ramp with no handrails on the first floor of the Mary Stanford Building for access to the Chapel from Lift 21, and for access to Neurophysiology and the Cambridge Building from Lift 20. There is a slight ramp without handrails for access to the first floor of the Cambridge Building from the first floor of the Mary Stanford Building.
    • The following areas have stepped access: 7 unmarked steps with handrails on both sides for access to the Mary Stanford Building - Entrance B and Lift 20 from the lower ground floor corridor of the Mary Stanford Building.
    • Access throughout may include manual doors, doors permanently held open and narrow walkways.
    • Floors LG, G ,M ,1, 1M, 2, 2M, 3, 4 and 5 can be accessed via a standard lift and stairs.
    • There are no toilet facilities.

Getting Around (Mary Stanford Building)

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of walkways, this may include the use of a lift.

  • The distance from the Mary Stanford Building - Entrance B is 5m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • Floors LG, G ,M ,1, 1M, 2, 2M, 3, 4 and 5 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • Some of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 118cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 155cm (width) x 240cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • Some of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

  • The lift surveyed is located on the lower ground floor of the Mary Stanford Building, in the centre area where the Mary Stanford, Cambridge and Clarence Buildings meet.
  • The distance from the Mary Stanford Building - South Wharf Road entrance is 47m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has steep ramps or slopes, doors permanently held open and narrow walkways.
  • The Basement, Ground, First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a low visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
  • At the time of survey (June 2025), the lift was out of service.

Stairs (Mary Stanford Building - Entrance B)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the right as you enter Mary Stanford Building - Entrance B.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • Floors LG, G ,M ,1, 1M, 2, 2M, 3, 4 and 5 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 15 steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade and unshaded light sources.

Stairs (Lift 21)

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the lower ground floor of the Mary Stanford Building, next to Lift 21.
  • Floors LG, G, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
