Getting to IWM Duxford and Useful Information

Getting Around Duxford

Outside Access

  • Entrance View
    • This information is for the entrance located at the front of the building.
    • The entrance area/door is clearly signed.
    • This entrance is signed with 'AirSpace'.
    • There is ramped/sloped access at this entrance.
    • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
    • The entrance door(s) does not/do not contrast visually with its immediate surroundings.
    • The main door(s) open(s) automatically (towards you).
    • The main automatic door(s) is/are push pad or push button activated.
    • The push pad or push button is 85cm from floor level.

      There is button at the entrance which can be used to slow the speed of the revolving doors.
      After you enter the AirSpace Hangar there is a Braille and Tactile map of the exhibitions and attractions.
      The recommended route around Airspace is to go the Level 1 exhibition first and then using the rear lifts to come back down to the ground floor exhibitions. However, there is no fixed route for visitors.

      In all of the areas there are a number of interactive exhibitions available. The height of interactive exhibitions varies between 80cm to 110cm.

      The headsets are fitted with hearing loops. The hearing loops were tested and working at the time of the survey.

      The height of the headset is 90cm. The headsets are fitted with hearing loops and they were tested and working at the time of surveying.
      There are touchscreens available. The height of the touchscreen is between 80cm and 96cm.
      There is access to the some of the aircrafts including the Concorde, Lancaster Bomber (only available for pre booked tour), Hermes and Avro York C1.
      The number of steps onto the aircraft varies from 5 to 15+.
      There are information boards with videos about the aircraft.
      There is clear walkways between the aircraft.

Airborne Assault Exhibition

Concorde

  • Concorde is located the at the rear of the hangar.
  • There is step-free access to Concorde.
  • There is a turnstile to access the steps up to Concorde, the width of the turnstile is 50cm.
  • There are 15+ steps leading from the floor to the entrance to the plane and back down from the plane.
  • If the plane is not accessible there is an information board, booklet and video tour about Concorde located to the left of the steps.
  • The video has an audio headset.
  • The height of the headset is 90cm.
  • The headset is fitted with a hearing loop.
  • The hearing loop was tested and working at the time of surveying.
  • There is step-free access once on board Concorde.
  • The surface of the flooring is vinyl.
  • There is seating available.

Lancaster Bomber

  • There are tours available of the Lancaster Bomber.
  • Tickets are required for the tour. Please speak to a member of staff about obtaining tickets and when the next tour is taking place.
  • The tour involves a 45 minute talk about the Lancaster Bomber.
  • There is seating available for the talk.
  • Visitors are then able to walk around under the aircraft.
  • There is the opportunity to board the bomber.
  • There is a limit of 5 to 6 visitors in the bomber at one time.
  • There are 8 steps with handrails on both sides to access the bomber.
  • The hatch into the bomber is 70cm wide and 95cm high.
  • Once inside the bomber there is a metal platform. From the platform visitors can see up the full length of the bomber.
  • The time on the bomber is limited to a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • There is a handling collection available including a flight jacket.

Accessible Toilet(s) (Ground Floor Exhibition - to the left after you enter. Left Hand Transfer)
