Access Guide
Introduction
- This route runs from the Leeds School of Art to The Rose Bowl.
- There are 2 entrances to The Rose Bowl.
- The Civic Hall entrance off Portland Way gives access to the ground floor and Student Hub.
- There are 2 routes which can be taken to the Civic Hall entrance.
- The upper route to the Civic Hall entrance is 204 metres and shares the first 110m with the route to the Rear Entrance and has 1 road crossing.
- The lower route to the Civic Hall entrance is 145 metres and has 2 road crossings.
- The route to the Rear Entrance is 158 metres and has 1 road crossing.
- The Rear Entrance facing Woodhouse Lane gives access to the second floor of the building.
Leeds School of Art Main Entrance to Portland Way
- Exit the Leeds School of Art via the main entrance and onto the concourse outside the building.
- The surface of the pathway is block paved and with some dark slabs which may simulate steps.
- After 5 metres bear left and proceed onto Portland Way.
- There is a very slight uphill gradient on this section of the route.
Portland Way to Portland Building
- Turn left onto Portland Way and proceed along the footpath.
- The surface of the footpath is concrete tiles.
- There is a slight uphill gradient along Portland Way.
- The footpath is over 150cm wide.
- After 75 metres there is a slight dropped kerb crossing a service access point for the Portland Building.
- The surface of the access point is block paved and is uneven in places.
- After crossing the access point the footpath returns to concrete tiles and is uneven in places.
- Continue along the footpath for 10m to the crossing point outside the Portland Building main entrance.
- There is a road sign on the footpath which narrows the width to 108cm.
Cross Portland Way
- Turn right and use the pedestrian controlled crossing to cross Portland Way.
- The crossing has audible and visual signals.
- The height of the buttons for the crossing controls is 110cm.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides of the crossing.
- The surface of the road is tarmac and is uneven in places.
- After crossing the road bear left and head follow the footpath until it widens out.
Route to Rose Bowl Rear Entrance: Portland Way to Rose Bowl Rear Entrance
- As the footpath on Portland Way widens turn left and proceed along the wide footpath running between the building and the car park.
- The surface of the pathway becomes block paved.
- There are bollards along the route.
- The height of the bollards is 102cm.
- The minimum width between the bollards is 139cm.
- The bollards do contrast visually with the paving.
- There is a slight downwards gradient along the pathway.
- Continue along the footpath for 27 metres and the Rose Bowl Rear Entrance is on the right.
Route to Civic Hall Entrance: Portland Way to Civic Hall
- Continue along Portland Way following the main footpath.
- The surface is concrete tiles and is uneven in some areas with manhole access covers.
- There is a slight downhill gradient along the footpath.
- After 37 metres there is a road sign which narrows the footpath to 99cm.
- Beyond the road sign the footpath begins to narrow towards the entrance to the Civic Hall access road.
- After 13 metres the footpath narrows to 148cm.
- There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving, at this point bear left and proceed onto a block paved surface which runs alongside the Civic Hall access road.
Alternative Route to Civic Hall Entrance: Portland Way to Claverley Street Crossing
- After exiting the concourse at the front of the Leeds School of Art building onto Portland Way, turn right and proceed along Portland Way to Claverley Street.
- The surface of the pathway is concrete tiles.
- There is a slight downwards gradient as the footpath bends to the right and the footpath narrows slightly.
- The footpath is over 150cm wide.
- There is a railing on the left running along the bend in the road and leading to the Claverley Street crossing point.
- There is a lamppost at the bottom of the gradient which narrows the pathway to 115cm.
- The Claverley Street crossing point is on the left.
Alternative Route to Civic Hall Entrance: Cross Claverley Street and Portland Way
- The crossing point is pedestrian controlled.
- The height of the controls for the crossing point is 115cm.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at all areas of the crossing point.
- There is a central island at the crossing point giving options to continue across Claverley Way, or to cross the bottom of Portland Way.
- On the island turn slight left to proceed to the Portland Way section of this crossing point.
- The surface of the roads at this crossing point is tarmac.
Alternative Route to Civic Hall Entrance: Portland Way to Civic Hall
- After crossing Portland Way turn left and proceed along Portland Way.
- There is a slight uphill gradient along Portland Way.
- The surface of the pathway is concrete tiles.
- The surface is uneven with some broken tiles.
- After 30 metres there is a lamppost on the left which reduces the width of the pathway to 120cm.
- After 13 metres the surface of the pathway becomes tarmac.
- Continue for 4 metres to the crossing point across the Civic Hall access point.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving on both sides of the crossing point.
- The surface of the crossing point is tarmac and is uneven in places.
- After crossing the access point turn right onto the block paved pathway which runs alongside the Civic Hall access point.
Civic Hall to Rose Bowl Civic Hall Entrance
- Proceed into the area between Civic Hall and The Rose Bowl, and bear left to head down a slight gradient.
- At the bottom of the gradient turn right and head under the canopy and proceed along the front of The Rose Bowl building.
- There is a slight camber downwards from right to left along this section of the footpath.
- After 12 metres exit from under the canopy and continue straight ahead for 6 metres.
- Turn left and the Civic Hall entrance to The Rose Bowl is straight ahead.
